I have tried looking this up on the forums and around the internet, but I’m trying to branch out and play some different classes and I’m considering a rotation helper addon like Hekili but I’ve seen stories of people getting banned for using “rotation bots”. I know Hekili is not a bot and you are still required to play the character yourself, but before I download it, can anyone offer clarification if this type of addon is a gray area or could cause a ban?
They’re not. You still gotta press the ability yourself. Bots of any kind are against.
If you’re doing inputs, it’s fine
If it’s doing inputs, that is not fine
Good clean rules to remember
ToS says: " AddOns must be free of charge."
So any paid add on, knowing there is a lot in this particular domain you’re asking about. Is a risk in itself. Is it worth getting caught or not? I would not trust reviews on those. Just stick to what is free. Hekili is usually community efforts at developing, so if it’s not good, discuss it out with your class discord.
They’re usually training wheels, in the long run you normally end up not needing it anymore and forge tit exists.
I don’t think Hekili is a paid addon, it appears to be free to download on curseforge
Hekili is not, but many (most) rotation add ons are paid.
It was possible to use Hekili, another addon that has always been questionable, and some creative macros to do some stuff that is totally bannable. I believe there was at least one hotfix to change how macros work to keep this from happening.
Hekili itself just puts up icons on the screen that show you what is off cooldown, or buffs that have expired. It’s like weak auras lite for players who are computer illiterate.
I use MaxDPS, lights up the next recommended spell. Does a better job than my old a… can by myself, lol
Premium addon devs get around the restrictions by offering the addon for free but charging for the data. It’s a grey area that Blizzard doesn’t care to try and enforce.
That doesn’t make it ToS legal still.
Hekili is fine. It does not break ToS.
With Hekili, you still have to press the buttons.
The basic rule is: One action, one keypress. As long as you stick to that, you’re in the clear.
No but just think… when you need a 3rd party addon to tell you how to play the game there is too much button bloat. 30 rotational abilities? These devs don’t play their own game. Little things like this prove it.
Wanna play wow? Download these 30 addons to do so. Lolololol.
As long as they don’t press the buttons for you they’re fine. They can tell you what to do, they just can’t do it for you.
No but they are bad in my opinion.
Be different if they actually help with a rotation but… they 9/10 don’t.
Depends on your spec. For some is helpful, others not so much.
They can’t really tell you little nuances, and i don’t think the coding can really pick up on those either. They’re just loaded will spell priorities, i think.
If your spec is just a button priority rotation it will probably do a lot better than it would for a spec like maybe HDH where you’ll hold things to line up cooldowns, or Devoker where you have to clip your disintegrates half the time.
There are like 5 free ones on Curseforge. All free.
Are their paid for ones out there? Yes. Some streamers are even advertising them, they do appear on Google searches, and many other links to them. Eiether way, I only seen two. Don’t know why someone would pay for something like that, but they do exist and yeah are against the rules.
It’s not that much different than Weak Auras. Most of the time it’s just a little bit smarter cooldown meter.
It’s “best” feature is telling me to interrupt. Easier to see that light up than the cast bar on the mob, the net data is the same tho.
Do they like take into account like mob density n stuff?
Rotation add-ons aren’t against the ToS because it’s not playing the game for you. All it’s doing is assisting you with casts based on priority spells that should be cast during your rotation.
So no your fine to use heikeli, just understand that it’s not always accurate at times and is just a good tool to use initially until you become intuitive enough to know when to press what.
As far as Hekili, they can take into consideration if you have multiple mobs on agro.
That being said, they are good for learning a spec. They give you a good idea on how to get your rotation down, esp in single target.
They lack nuance, or knowing when to hold certain cooldowns for specific burst events. They are by no means perfect, but give a good starting point.
