Are PVE servers bad?

As someone who played on a PvP server consistently from Vanilla up through Cataclysm, and who thoroughly enjoyed and loved playing on said PvP server, I rolled PvE for Classic.

Why? I felt that the PvP realm was fun when it was a bunch of us idiot nerds who didn’t know how to play the game. The number of min/maxers per realm that were top-tier were few and far between. You generally knew the top few people per-class on your realm PvP-wise off the top of your head. Even if you weren’t using a PvP centric spec/set of gear, it felt like you still had a “chance” in a lot of the cases.

For Classic, I anticipated that a bunch of try hard nerds would flood the PvP servers trying to flex all over the place. People would be much more knowledgable in general on how to play PvP optimally, and those who didn’t prioritize PvP would suffer for it. I still don’t know if that’s the actual reality of things post-launch, but some anecdotal forum posts suggests it could be that way on some servers.

Since PvE content is more important to me than PvP content, I begrudgingly decided to roll on a PvE server. I still don’t know if it was the right decision, but it feels like it was the right decision based on the threads I see come through here on the daily.

If I could take a time machine to go back to 2004 when we were all Grade A Derp Lords? Guaranteed PvP server all the way.

He stole someones skin :open_mouth:

i like getting even. :).

i wouldn’t go that far. its all about enjoyment in the end. i enjoy world pvp when you get to a zone like hillsbrad and a small group is stirring it up and then gets bigger as more trickle in on both sides. i’ve had some hours long pvp in hillsbrad that went back and forth and was just as fun as doing av.

its all about fun. i just dont 'have any fun when i know the other player isn’t having any either. which is why i only ever gank someone that is ganking.

Because in my experience outside of the first couple of weeks, 99% of PvP on PvP server is lvl 60’s vs lvl 20’s. I enjoy Battlegrounds and Arenas, but I don’t enjoy useless PvP encounters that lack any tension or doubt of outcome.

I rolled on a PvP server not because I want to gank or be ganked, but because I want the possibility of that over my head as I adventure. I have already, even at my low level, started engaging in my roguish ways. Mostly pickpocketing npcs at rhis point, but I hope to be out stealthing among real horde players eventually. If I’m caught, I want the outcome to be real, not a hide and seek game.

I’ve played for years on Albion Online, which is a full loot PvP game (if you’re killed, you even drop your mount, along with all your gear) without spending much of my time in the PvP zones.

I want to live my character’s virtual existence in a world where there is a chance of being killed. Where there are opponents much more dangerous than the latest AI technology can incorperate in an npc.

This is a fair point. I haven’t run into it yet but I assume as more people hit max level and get BiS / specialty items it could get much worse.

It is always tempting to attack a yellow name in a PVE server. Last week on my way to rfd 1 yellow name turned into a 5v5.

Pve servers are only bad if you want to do wpvp.

I think a lot of the player stigma from pve servers comes from the loss of the perception of “Danger” in the open world. If members of the opposite faction can only mess with me when I am open to it, is there a faction struggle or real threat to me in the open world?.

I also don’t think that players on pve servers build reputations with members of the opposite faction like they do on pvp servers (“Disguize ganking near Yeti cave again - watch out!” or “Good guy Zhane just saved my life instead of killing me when I pulled to many mobs and he was around, please do not gank him”).

For those of us that have always played on pvp realms, the loss of this danger and faction struggle makes a large portion of the game just feel hollow. Does that make it wrong for people to play on pve? of course not; it’s just not for everyone.

Except it’s not even close to a quarter of the game it’s just one singular object ruined by trolls

Meh… I prefer real pvp games that are actually skill based.

PVE servers are for alliance players who want to hold hands and skip thru raids.

Someone on a pve server trying to tell me what pvp is lol.

You clearly have no clue what it is, yet another of the reasons I rolled PvE this time around.

the vast majority of wpvp is just ganking, hence why I don’t bother with pvp servers.

Thats exactly what pve sercers are. It removes the ganking aspect of your game experience. Everyone acts like world pvp is some noble and glorious thing … but seldom if ever is it two equally leveled and geared enemies duking it out in the open world. 99% of the time its a group of max level players out griefing lowbies in a level 20 questing zone.

A lot of the playwr base arent fond of that. Ive got my main toons on a pvp server … but occasionally i enjoy some pve peace & quiet too.

Ok bud, once again a pve server player telling someone who has played pvp servers throughout all of wow history, gotten glad 3 times (not that it matters in vanilla), attempting to tell me what pvp is. LOL ok bud you keep trying.

The vast majority of wpvp FOR YOU was ganking. That’s what you actually mean.

Exactly I dealt with that garbage during actual classic, the only place you get real pvp is when it’s planned or through BGs.

You keep being delusional there bud, reality doesn’t change for your misconceptions
