Are Professions useless at low level now?

Been leveling up my Mining and Blacksmithing for a few days, and I’m only around level 74ish. I got 3 pieces of gear upgrades from Blacksmithing (boots, chest, and wrist armor) that only required Level 71. I’m only at 22/100 Blacksmithing, but now every piece of gear that it lets me craft after that requires Level 80 to equip. So now I just have to stop Blacksmithing until I hit level cap? Is that how this works?

I liked them to help prep me for content at my level and prepare me for higher level. That said, I take Mining/Herbing til 70, hang on to mats, then decide which to drop and what to replace it with. The XP and free mats along the way is nice.

I think what you are looking for is this item…

You add that to the level 71 crafted items you make, and they turn into a higher item level 74 item instead, then you make the level 80 stuff once you are 80.

Still, that only covers the three item slots I can make of boots, chest, and wrists. Can’t make any weapons or anything else useable it seems until I hit 80 (which is ironically when I won’t need them as much).

There is also rings, neck, cloak that use that item. It isn’t going to cover all slots I know. But it is a nice bump, at least till you are 80.

I miss when expansions had a low level green set where you could craft a full set for easy blacksmithing levels and a nice leveling set for low level alts, and a max level blue rare quality set to help you get into dungeons and then the raid epics on top of that. (though there was usually less of the epic pieces)

Now they combine the green and blue set into one set with some of the pieces being usable at low levels for whatever the current expansion is and the rest unsuable until max level.

You will want to keep leveling smithing to 100 anyway. The level 80 stuff you can make is really nice stuff. With chests you can make weapons and plate at 590 ilvl, with sparks you can make 603. Working on it early will give you time to get yourself enough specialization points into the armor or weapons you want to unlock.

My blacksmith is level 100, but only a level 72 paladin, I am making some easy money just making bars using concentration that does nothing otherwise. You can also fill out work orders and make some nice money. Also patron orders now, the money is poop, but you can get other items, or even specialization points from them.

I don’t really care about gold right now since I have a hoard of it from Dragonflight. I could really use gear upgrades, and it seems like finding gear this expansion is intentionally hard. Back to running delves, I guess. At least they drop loot that I can actually use.

Gunna be honest, I leveled from 70 to 80 just wearing what I had in dragonflight. I only took it off at 80 because the tier set stops working at 80 lol. I was only ilvl 503 I wanna say when I was 70. You get rewarded a ton of stuff doing the main story quest as well. Which is the most important thing you can really do, cause you wanna unlock the ability to do world quests soon as you are 80. That is going to help you get delve keys, doing bountiful delves on +8 is ezmode, guaranteed 603 - 610 ilvl gear. (616 vault rewards too)

Don’t worry about your gear until max level. Not a single thing you acquire is going to be with you for any significant amount of time and is not worth any king of significant investing in.

Get to max level. That is your sole objective at this point.

If you want to go down the crafting your own items route, you can craft items to make them higher or lower using the ‘relics of the past’ for example.

Must be nice. I came into War Within with some basic Dragonflight gear around 400ish iLevel, so I got stuck in the campaign because the mob packs were outleveling my gear progression. I had to stop and go spam delves just to find an upgrade. I’m currently at 468 iLevel after about 7 delves at Tier 1.

Ooof, yea, that will hurt. Hmm, well get some of those sigils, I linked, best you can do, I think those turn into level 74 with a 556 ilvl on them. Find a jeweler, and tailor for the rings, neck and cloak, I am pretty sure the ring isn’t unique either. So get 2. If you were linked to my server I would hook you up, I have all crafts maxed out.

You could always que for dungeons, as DPS, while you are out questing, and hope for drops from those as well. To bad you just missed out on timewalking week, that would have helped.

If you are rolling in bank, you should check out the auction house. There is a ton of level 74 stuff on my server, cheap, that might help fill out bad slots you have.

Why are you making gear to level in for? The quests are a joke, things die fast.

Depends on the ilvl you went into the expansion with. Someone with full tier set, BIS trinkets, fully enchanted / gemmed over ilvl 500 is going to breeze through this content, compared to a fresh ding who has ilvl 400, with nothing special.

I had this same issue in dragonflight myself. With a fresh dinged 60, leveling was pure hell, I had to craft out every slot I could, if not everything died so slow, and I was stuck pulling 1 thing at a time.

Yeah, I guess I’ll have to take a look at the Auction House too. Most of the quests are throwing gold at me left and right, but no gear. Do you know if you get the same gear in a follower dungeon as a regular dungeon?

No idea about follower dungeons. The few I did try, nothing gear wise dropped at all. I assumed it was just a basic story mode to play with. Best of luck to you, either way!

I had the same experience, disappointed that I could not really gear myself as I leveled.

I even put in a suggestion via the in-game window to allow players to do so.

So, it turns out most of the gear (weapons and armor) that are on the Auction house are also locked to Level 80 (except specific slots like rings and cloak). There are even some that say they are Level 70, but when you click to buy them, they are actually locked to Level 80. By the way, you can get the exact same gear from follower dungeons as normal dungeons, I looked it up.

You can get gear from follower dungeons but it isn’t guaranteed at all.

You really need to just do questing. Sure not every quest gives an item, but most of them will. A lot of quests are chains and the reward at the end, more often than not, is going to be an item. This includes side quests which I believe do NOT scale with your level until max so you can probably end up doing some of the earlier zone ones and just power through them on level alone.

Once you are 80 and quest through the main campaign, world quests will open and those can have gear drops as well as delves can be progressed which drops progressively stronger gear.

Gearing via crafting is expensive AF and really bad overall since the item level is actually inferior too. Crafting serves a VERY niche purpose at endgame and mostly because of embellishments which often is paired with slots people just have bad luck trying to fill and/or there just isn’t a “good enough” drop. In order for crafted gear to be worth it, the crafter has to have invested a ton of knowledge points into specific setups as well as the customer needs to provide top of the line materials (often) as well as a resource specific to them called an enchanted crest which requires having run a fair bit of content at varying levels based on the level of the enchanted crest. It isn’t just bring 5 bars to someone and walk away with a new piece of gear. Crafted pieces can take weeks of resources/effort to make.
