Are Death Knights evil or good?

Why/why not?

Bad, because they wear skulls on their armor

They used to be evil under the control of the Lich King.

Now with the Lich King dead they are rather self-employed.

They’re gevil

Like sylvannis. So evil?

You know judging by their Legion campaign they’re quite literally the only time Blizzard got their morally grey the correct shade.

Why, then, ’tis none to you, for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

Lawful neutral, they’re pretty evil with their willingness to do stuff like raise their allies from the grave and their need to feed off the pain of others, but they generally serve the cause of good.

They’re monsters, but they’re your monsters.

Depends on the Death Knight more than likely.

Since they regained their sentience, I imagine their original personalities might have returned.

Some death knights probably embrace their condition and revel in the darkness.

Others probably continue to try to do good, despite their condition.

I imagine some float around in a grey area between the two.

Well, death knights are not good or bad.
Death knights are … complicated! :confounded:

Death Knights have free will, so they’re as grey as any other entity that also has free will

Well, as grey as any entity that has free will and literally needs to feed on pain.

Chaotic neutral.

The current Gen 3 DK’s, yeah, but I dont think the Gen 4 DKs will be raised that way. Arthas intentionally afflicted the Gen 3s with that but Bolvar has no reason to.

And DKs can still feed their need to inflict pain on targets that are justifiably in a position to receive it.

There’s no reason to think this, all we know is death knights need to feed on pain or they devolve into mindless undead. We don’t even know if it’s possible for death knights to be raised without this need.

Either way there is simply no way for a being that literally needs to feed on the suffering of others to be a little darker than baseline. At their very, very best they still need to kill people.

We also know that Forsaken are Undead in a somewhat similar vein and aren’t afflicted by this impulse at all. We also know that Arthas as the Lich King was incredibly sadistic which is what creates the breadth for this discussion to exist.

But to address this, all things are not equal. They may feel the impulse to inflict pain, but directing that impulse at targets deemed justifiable for the greater good is no different than your typical soldier. If DKs had serial killer tendencies i’d cede to this argument but that is clearly not the case.

Obligatory “Hey-oh!” incoming.

Hey-oh! o/

I’d argue DK’s are one of the most morally correct classes. They have their slip ups like they did in Legion, but their entire premise is that they do what the living cannot, and that they live to serve and protect the living after they were manipulated into committing atrocities.

Now whether or not that remains the case going forward given Bolvar’s actions in Legion? Who knows?
