I would say that was the best depiction of free-will DK’s ingame.
I also personally liked the choice of slaughtering the Red Dragons and essentially making them extinct. I get why Blizz went back on that as canon, but it was still another perfect depiction of DKs and player choice. (I snuffed them out like a candle, fyi)
Forsaken were created by less powerful necromancy. In Legion Darion explicitly mentions the fact that death knights are still under the effects of the eternal hunger. Which suggests that the eternal hunger is more than just an impulse like it is for the Forsaken.
If a solder physically had to not just kill people periodically, but to inflict pain and suffering do you think that would be normal and fine?
Death knights aren’t evil because their powers can make them powerful heroes for good causes and the Ebon Blade are champions of Azeroth, but they are certainly closer to that line than they would be if they weren’t death knights.
But seriously, they’re an antihero, think deadpool: they get the job done and are mostly serving “good” purposes, but do it in a very morally shady way
as A warcraft 3 nerd I see both dk and dh as a “necessary evil” for their cause. Yes - to us dk’s were an “Evil” entity, but really they were fighting and dying for a cause they felt was ethical (hindsight - it may have been). Dh are in the same boat in my opinion.
So to answer your question - I see them as evil - but with a good cause (depending on who’s side you’re on ;))
So, good and evil are childish concepts that have no basis in reality.
Which means, like everyone else, they’re neither. They’re morally ambiguous individuals with a predisposition for either benevolence, malevolence, or apathy.
While under the control of Arthas they had no free will and were merely tools of the lich king, much like a weapon. Thus a weapon is not good or evil but the person using them. Since Arthas used them they are neither but Arthas is Evil.
Now after getting their free will back that depends per each knight as some can be evil and others good.
