Arachnophobia filter...seriously

This isn’t the first game to address arachnophobia and it won’t be the last. And no, none of them have gone down that slippery slope to my knowledge as a result. Come on now.

It is more of a, not all fears are phobias, but all phobias are fears type of thing. Rational Fears are often grouped up with phobias for ease and quicker explanations, and over time may just randomly get included into the phobia listings for simplicity.

Not a good or bad thing, just a thing that happens when more then enough information is gathered.

I was just about to make almost this exact post.

This particular filter in a vacuum isn’t a problem. The problem is now Pandora’s box is opened. People see they’re willing to spend resources on this, so more will expect their specific phobia get its own filter. Follow it all the way to its logical conclusion, and we’ll be getting entire patches that are just phobia filters catering to smaller and smaller sections of the playerbase. Where does it end? Where is the line drawn? No matter where you try, someone will be upset, it’s better to just not start in the first place. 5 years from now when they announce the next expansion is cancelled because they’re just making a 100gb patch of phobia filters, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

That doesn’t answer my question. I don’t care about the rationality or lack there of in someone’s arbitrary fear. I’m curious as to why Blizzard would change the spiders to something that has a very similar form factor. Everyone with arachnophobia is triggered by different aspects and I know for some people it’s the legs, so why change them to a creature that more or less has identical legs and locomotion? Wouldn’t it make more sense to change them into something completely unspiderlike?

This I agree with 100%

Uh… what’s wrong with wolves? If you treat the wolf puppy well, even though it’s a wolf when it gets older doesn’t mean it will be aggressive. How else you think we got dogs?

That’s not irrational. A phobia is when someone experiences disproportionate fear to perceiving something even when it poses no threat to them, e.g. thalassophobia triggered by questing in Vashj’ir.

But there’s usually a rational reason behind having that irrational fear. I know wasps aren’t all that bad but I’m still gonna yell and run away from them and be petrified.

I was at O’Reilly’s the other day and wasp got in my car and I had to wait for it to leave so I could drive.

OP here. Sweet Jesus what did you people do to this thread. Just to clarify something as I think the tone might have been misinterpreted, but this isn’t exactly a topic I’m quite as passionate on as some of you in here. It was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. I don’t think they’ll remove it or expand it to other phobias. Calm the heck down lol

The dev who made this is a quest designer.

So there you have it. What ‘valuable’ content could they have been working on otherwise? more quest dialog you skip?

It’s time to eschew seat belts, air bags, crumple zones, speed limits, roadway markings, regulatory committees to review trends in accidents & oversee automobile manufacturers, etc. It’s really a slippery slope to start widening safety margins because it robs us from our ability to self-manage and keep ourselves safe. What’s next? Self-driving cars that remove our ability to drive ourselves?

No, we should cease this ridiculous march towards safety because we’re losing our edge. #cardioovercars

I thought the Monster’s name was Adam?!

And if we take that logic to it’s natural conclusion, then we’d be in a pure Darwinian society. Not a good thing.

Wasn’t it Flyod?

Living up to your namesake eh? :stuck_out_tongue:

I think in the book the monster refers to himself as Adam. Idk it’s been so long since I read the book.
