Here is what they did to Minecraft when they bought them years back
Turned that game into a huge micro transactions store
Anyone cheering great changes are coming… Yeah they are, just expect to buy them as dlc packages

On PC you just mod it all for free though…

I wonder if people at Microsoft will listen to the players and get Blizzard to do a good job.

I’m cautiously optimistic honestly. I think Microsoft buying them out is the surprise of the year tho - Acti-Blizz getting bought out is the best opportunity to save WoW and other banner games IMO.

The difference is WoW already has a reliable and profitable revenue stream. Part of Minecraft’s problem was it didn’t.

Keep in mind that is the console version, the PC version has none of that. The console version is actually allowed to charge for things we get for free.

That was one of many examples
Do you want to be reminded what they did to fallout 76?

I don’t mind microtransactions if the game is fun. Right now WoW is not fun.
People wouldn’t pay for microtransactions when a game sucks. So the game itself should get better.

Well you are the one that used Minecraft as an example, I was just pointing out it was a bad one.

Im with you Clark. I argued with a guy like two years ago about a hypothetical Microsoft buyout and why I thought it was a bad time. The end times have come to pass

Bethesda did that way before MS purchased them.

Minecraft has literally never been as insanely successful or popular as it is now. Stop. You’re wrong. What’s your next wrong example? FO76? Bethesda botched that years before MS acquired them.

I will also say that Phil Spencer has openly said they want games and has been vocal about how bad NFTs are for gaming.
You have to remember that Xbox currently has the groundwork for a massive games options explosion with the studios they have acquired. The only problem they are currently having is getting enough xbox units out.

Back when being one of the most sold games of all time was good enough.

I don’t hold much hope for the gaming industry in the hands of big companies. This is why I continue to explore indie games on steam made by people who have a vision of what they want to make and aren’t beholden to profits.
The industry continues to move closer and closer to F2P/P2W games or ones that need to DLC to feel rounded out. My most recent disappointment was Tales of Arise because I love the series, but while the game doesn’t really shove or force them down your throat it’s riddled with P2W DLC content. Moreover while the game wasn’t bad, the two recent releases feels like a hollow shell of how the game used to work in terms of open world versus on the rails.

Closer? We’ve been there.
Other than niche games on Steam, like Squad or Space Engineers, the barrier to entry for most games is the game + DLCs. Paradox Games, Bohemia Titles.
I wouldn’t pay even if the game doesn’t suck. I am fine with the cash shop now etc. but if I have to start paying for extra quests, unlocking certain gear, etc. then definitely wouldn’t keep playing. I am also fine paying per expansion like now w/ the monthly sub.

I recently tried to go back and play a little Minecraft while taking a break from WoW and discovered Microsoft had completely locked me out, just sending me to a gigantic store
