Anyone else upset about Zen 3 Launch?

Personality can’t wait to have a meaningful perceivable uplift from my ancient 8700k.

Maybe next generation will be worth it

They say 11th Gen is 20% faster than the 10700k. Its also the last chip on this socket. So is the AMD. Q4 of 2021 is new intel socket 12th Gen and new Amd socket AM5. Imo only people who should upgrade now are folks already on AM4 for Zen3 or z490 for 11th Gen.

Upgrade then imo. We be a meaningful upgrade for both sides. Esp with DDR5

I currently don’t plan on building a system or upgrading in the near future, but seeing the horsepower increase brought by Zen 3 is really nice. It means by the time I do build there’s going to be some incredibly juicy gains.

not that i’am bias but i have owned an intel system before nothing but problems.

Amd has the power

Ever heard the term “prefect world” ? Thats what a benchmark is run in. On top of that thats a stock 10900k. Not an overclocked one. People see benchmarks and buy into it like its the word of god. Far from it. Its a prefect world scenario. They never exist. I wish consumers actually understood benchmarks lol. I have done real world testing on customer builds recently. Two identical builds. I am telling you once overclocked the i9 10900k takes the lead from the 5900x. Not by much but its there. At worst in gaming they are neck and neck.

I have also seen people try to OC on crappy motherboards. You overclock on one of those it the boost comes at the cost of performance. You OC on a good Motherboard and you get the Speed+ the Performance boost.

You also can NOT buy AMD atm so people like me who were doing new builds for them self were FORCED to go intel. I agree with you though on one thing AMD Has the better Technology! Sadly I had to do my build this week and couldnt get a 5900x for myself anywhere!

Yup, Core i9-10900K OC with 300W+ power consumption to get there.

Have you tried Ebay i’ve seen a few with buy it now for a reasonable price

Yeah I’m not paying over MSRP I’m sorry I’m not enabling scalpers. You also seem to have missed the point I’m not denying that the 5900x is better it’s hands-down better. What I’m saying is I did my build this week and I was unable to get one so I was forced to go Intel. If I could have bought one I would have.

I feel like you haven’t read any of my post like actually read them. You read 10900k and stopped. I didn’t buy this processor by choice I I bought it out of necessity. I wanted to 5900x I couldn’t find one anywhere and I still can’t find one. It’s hands-down the better processor however the 10900k is just as good. I didn’t really have a choice in the matter because I had to do my build now and couldn’t get a 5900x. As for power consumption I have never once cared about that nor will I and if you think it will make a difference in your power bill you’re delusional. I feel like the point that I can’t get one in pretty much no one can was falling on deaf ears

Honestly the performance difference between the 5900x and the 10900k is so minimal. Both options are perfect and will suit the user for years. Only reason I plan to get a 5900x is that I like to hold onto CPU’s for far longer than GPU’s. Seeing as I got a x570 board I might as well top it off with the latest chip I can slap on it.

Thank you for actually reading what I had to say instead of just linking benchmarks

I think it’s important to look at all these products without searching for ways to validate your own purchase decisions. It’s hard, and I do it too. I just did in this thread at least once.

Right now none of these options are truly terrible and the ones that perform worse cost less and the ones that perform better cost more.

So it doesn’t seem anyone’s really losing here.

I feel you man it’s just no one’s happy when they’re absolutely forced to buy second best and that’s the situation I was in. Amd’s website scammed me out of the processor I wanted twice. I had it in my cart and when I hit the purchase but they told me the item in my cart was no longer available. Once it’s in my cart it should lock it out to others until I’m done making my purchase or until a certain amount of time has gone by Unfortunately they did not set their website up to do this

The climate right now just isn’t really a buyer’s market. It’s been that way for all new tech releases, not just CPUs and GPUs. PS5, Xbox Series X, etc.

Just how it goes these days.

Well luckily the the vender I bought the i9 10900k and my motherboard from? Their return policy is January 31st due to the holidays. So was stock fixes itself before then I can actually return it for the 5900x.

Sadly I think things are going to stay this way till February or March aka end of Q1.

Mean while… I’m trying to justify switching back to Intel because AMD is a hassle for some things.
9900k @$200 or the 10700k @320 is such a good value.
Only reason for me to keep the 3900x is for the 12cores.

Changing CPU is a heart attack sometimes when the cpu comes off with the heatsink. (i don’t always have the ability to bake the cpu before taking it off) and sometimes the tension of the heatsink is enough to yank it off.

Don’t know if its exclusive to the motherboards I’ve used, but everytime I need to change gpu’s I would have to reset the CMOS to get it to work. Never had that problem with Intel.

I won’t deny that AMD does have some issues and what I really really hate dealing with is their bios. AMD bios feels like an R&D verson of intels. Having to reset the CMOS every time you do an upgrade to the motherboard is an example of that.

I can give you some honest advice though. I build computers for a living and I will tell you that I never advised clients to go with older technology. So the i7 10700k would be your best bet. I would get it at Best Buy to because they have extended their return policy till January 15th. So that way if you’re not completely happy with it you can always switch back and you’ve got plenty of time to decide.

The main reason you really want to go with a z490 motherboard AKA 10th gen is the processor they are releasing in January/Feb 11th Gen will be z490 also

I have changed my 1600’s CPU cooler once - about a year with the basic Wraith Spire until I swapped it to the Wraith Prism - but luckily it just glided off without any problems.

@Sal: Funny enough as I was helping a friend build his recent build. I showed him how easy it was to remove the D15 off of his 1600x then I went home that day and my 3900x came off with my Dark Rock cooler and freaked me out. I guess the perk to that was, it stayed stuck to my cooler so I just put it back into its socket afterwards

@Shifty: Its more of my secondary build. That is composed of recycled parts. Feels weird putting the 1080ti and recycle in the same sentence, but ultimately whenever its my turn for EVGA"s 3080 queue, I will be retiring it to that build. To me who rarely play the latest and greatest game, the only reason I’d even get the 10700 is if I cannot find a z390 itx board for a reasonable price.

A lot of people talk about motherboard prices and things like that. The only advice I can really give you is this the same advice I give my clients.

Your motherboard is where you want to spend the majority of your money on a computer. Cut Corners elsewhere. I can’t tell you how many clients have not listen to me and get a B550 and then end up swapping to the x570 because they were not happy with the quality or the features. The motherboard is the central nervous system of your computer it has a lot of factors and how it performs. It’s not where you want to try and save money. There are other areas for that.

I can tell you for a fact that if you were on a good x570 motherboard you would never have to reset your CMOS when updating things. B550 or below? You kind of get what you pay for. I am always quite insistent on good motherboards for example for AMD the MSI Ace or RoG Crosshair Hero would be my top choices. When just picking them up other motherboards feel like pieces of cardboard compared to those
