Nah man. I was, like, 20 when WoW came out. I ain’t got that kinda nostalgia.
I like the direction the story is going… with where they made it go. Sylvanas needs to be stopped. But that doesn’t mean I agree with Sylvanas becoming a maniacal villain.
I miss the days when the horde was just a bunch of misfit races and people banding together to survive. The forsaken were evil, but were kept in check and knew that there were still lines that can’t be crossed.
Seems like everything about that Horde has changed. Now, the general idea is that the Horde can only survive if we kill the alliance first… when the alliance has spared us time and time again.
BfA should have started because of actual conflict, like Genn attacking Sylvanas in stormheim. That’s reason to start a war (or continue the conflict) . But they pushed a new narrative onto Sylvanas and are trying to make her “queen of the dead” or something. She burns the tree. Every sane person thinks that it was a horrible idea, especially for war, and she did it anyways. She hates undeath and everything that Arthas forced her into. Why does she want turn the world into undeath? Where did this idea come from before BfA? It didn’t.
Because blizz needs a villain and they can’t for the life of them make a new, compelling character with motivations. So they choose from their healthy stockpile of Horde characters. Well, not healthy anymore since they’ve all been turned to raid bosses or idiots.
I feel like the only people who like where sylvanas’s story is going are people who hate her or don’t care because it’s a video game.
At least with Garrosh even his decent to madness made sense. He was trying to free his people and got high on being a warlord. He was also young and dumb.
Sylvanas just wanted to kill Arthas, wait no, to live forever… or is it kill all the living now? Or is it save the forsaken from death? Her key motives are all scrambled and don’t make sense with anything she is doing. After valkyr one minute, working with old gods the next? Crying for the horde in one cinematic and blight them all in the next?
And above all. I hate fighting my own faction!
Hard as it is to believe, I feel for Horde players expressing a general sense of “This is not the Horde I was originally sold”. They’ve been chipping away at the Horde I knew and loved since Cata, finally utterly, and irrevocably wrecking it in the pre-patch.
I was disenheartened, but still not quite thoroughly dispirited. I still had the Alliance, after all. Then 8.1 trashed the Alliance I was originally sold, as well. I was sold an Alliance based on “you scratch my back, I scratch yours”. Not “you continually scratch the Imperium of Man’s back, while they ignore the Horde-shaped axe in yours”.
King Varian Wrynn says: First: the races of the Alliance look out for one another.
King Varian Wrynn says: You are expected to provide aid to Alliance members in need, whether they be human, gnome, draenei… or a pandaren like yourself.
King Varian Wrynn says: It is a simple guideline, but a meaningful one. Do you understand?
Night Elves are my sole, lingering attachment to the franchise. Which isn’t a hopeful thing to say. We know by now how much the devs truly love Night Elves, and thoroughly enjoy crafting meaningful and competent storylines for them.
I’m with ya OP. I’m also not getting Warcraft III Reforged in fear of the retcons they’re going to give both Sylvanas and Jaina. Well I shouldn’t say not getting but I’m holding off until I hear if they did rectons or not.
Not depressed here at all. Sylvanas might be dying, the Horde may be restored to its former direction like it was under Thrall… things are pretty great in the story right now I must say! And to think, all it cost us was a big tree and a massive toilet.
Why, I was feeling just fine having a blast in ESO until nostalgia hit me and I decided to check the forums (I refuse to log-in and subject myself to all that class butchering and Lore massacre) .
Now I feel frustenraged thank you!
To think they had some high quality characters, the backbone to a great story… and it just ended like the last season of GoTs; All Burned to Ashes because yes!!
Any player, any day can think of better reasons for this “War” to happen.
Fanfic writers can develope Sylvanas’ antihero style 100 times better.
Blizzard can only exploit Arthas story for the third time, each worse than the previous…
You made me think… The first type of mentality (just drop when it’s bad, no feelings invested) would have taken us somewhere far behind to where we are now.
For the so called Homosapiens-sapiens… emotions play quite the part in our own improvement.
Blizzard doesn’t know how to write this story because, tragically, they actually suck at writing war.
Blizzard keeps glorifying the Alliance likely due to the internalized need to maintain Humans + Light = Good and thus Orc/Undead + Fel/Shadow = Bad narrative, thus the Horde has gotten the villain bat with a racial leader OR a capital city raided due to incompetence for all of WoW’s history.
Consider: TBC and Kael, Wrath and Wrathgate drama and the instanced Undercity, Cataclysm had the opposite with Thrall turning into an insufferable Green Jesus Deus Ex Machine Earth Aspect Somehow, MOP and Garrosh/Siege of Ogrimmar, all of Warlords are “Orcs are doing bad things kill them!”, Legion began to demonize Sylvanas, and now we’re in BFA with Sylvanas getting the super Villain bat, and this is without mentioning that technically EVERY SINGLE EXPANSION we’ve been killing trolls during an in-between-content patch that are now “part of” in tenuous capacities the new Horde Race that, oh yeah, were the villains for MOP (which was explained away with “It was just Zul!”, while we tolerated Zul for an entire zone and a half this xpac).
Blizzard has no idea how to make the in-game-stand-ins-for-Western-civilization evil because that would require actual self reflection and demonizing the generally “Good” coding characters, what with Light Prince-Paladin Anduin, Magical Power Couple Of Nature And Elune Malfurion and Tyrande, the redeemed and consistently valued Dwarves (because the Hordeside Reliquary was given up on), Humans but Furries, Gnomes the perfectly fine tech geeks, and even the Void Elves are constantly proven to be perfectly fine even though the entire plot theoretically should involve Alleria and the Void and N’zoth and Sylvanas and Death.
Blizzard doesn’t know how, literally is incapable, does not have the balls to make Humans and Nelves and etc do evil or even vaguely bad things.
Cataclysm was “Garrosh’s descent part 1.” People were just distracted by Thrall at the time.
