I am adventuring my way thru Draenor for the first time and am enjoying a lot of it. Spires of Arak is a wonderful questing zone, treasure hunting has been great fun and the plant people attacking my garrison was a chaotic hoot!
But I am disappointed in the garrison and followers. In the case of the garrison, I have spent most of my mage’s gold and gotten very little in return for it, outside of an obnoxious bug and some war paint. And the followers seem to mainly generate resources for themselves. Both appear to be fairly closed systems. On top of that, the play involving them both is fast becoming tedious.
So I am wondering if there is any endgame or payoff to it now that the expansion is over? Or is there little point to investing in it past my own whim?

There are a lot of cosmetics to unlock.
A neat head band, a few cool hats, some farming equipment you can transmog as weapons, some cute mounts, et cetera.
I’d say it is worth it if any of that sounds good to you.

I unlocked mine mostly for the level 3 fishing shack. Since they jacked the fishing, not exactly worth the expense just for the fish, but I love to summon that murloc and kill it.
I have read (I didn’t play when WoD was new/current) that you could make a lot of gold in the early days, seems to me that the cost of the upgrades did not adjust when this gold-making was removed. So I would say unless there is some aspect you are particularly interested in, it likely isn’t worth the expense at this late stage.

If you’re an engineer you could build an AH, and combine that with a bank, you never have to set foot within any city.

You don’t need to be an engineer to make the auctioneer in your garrison. It was a pain in the butt to get all the parts but I have loved having it there in my own private space.

I find myself pushing my alts’ garrisons to level 2 at least just to get it out of the shack phase, but about half the time I push it all the way to 3. No particular reason, just feels nice to the completed instead of dangling eternally.
The shipyard can screw itself though, I only completed that thing on my main a couple months ago. Such a pain for so little reward.

I totally agree with you about the shipyard, I did it on one character only, while at first it was interesting, it quickly became an unrewarding chore. (after I got the heirloom rings)

Despite my frustration with its implementation in WoD and the effect it had on gathering proffs (most proffs really) the garrision is now actually very useful. For things like Sumptuous Fur, etc its well worth the investment of time.
The only benefit of the shipyard is the heirloom rings, other than that its a waste of time.

I still use my garrison on my tailor for making bags, 30 slots are 30 slots and the mats are already gathered in the thousands

Thank you for the warning.
If I do it, will it at least get the king out of my town hall and back to his own castle?
It does get the king out of your hall. My husband did it for this reason alone.

Other than on your main? If you want to for crafting alts. Having a level 3 menagerie on multiple toons is nice for pet stuff, but not needed.
I have 4 fully upgraded garrisons. There’s heaps of content in them. Professions, toys, mogs, mounts, pets, achieves, utilities like AH, portals to other locations on Draenor etc. Plus it’s a great place to get away from people during the upcoming scourge event so you can troll trade chat from the safety of your garrison too.

Yes, and those bags have sold surprisingly well, considering they are the same slot number as the current silkweed bags. The price on my main servers has dropped considerably over the last few weeks, though, for some reason.
I suppose in theory an evil friend could come into your garrison by invite and spread the plague that way. Of course, if one of my guildies did that, I would slap them in the head with a dead trout…

Haha! I had forgotten about the trade chat being in the garrison. (I leave trade the first time I set foot in a city), but it is a place to be useful through events like that. (if there is anything you want/need to do) However, you can’t really go to a city from there except SW/Org so…Unless you’re a mage, of course, or have one handy.
Tier 3 garrison comes with an Ashran portal I think so you can use that to then port to Org/SW quickly.

I haven’t had a lot of luck with selling the hexweave bags (WoD) unless I priced them about the same as the BFA models. However, the top slot (36) leather working and mining bags come from WoD.
It’s definitely werth at least building it up to a lvl 3 once on a toon to experience it. There’s heaps of stuff you can do. And when Halloween and Xmas come around you can do some dailies to deck out the garrison in those themes.
Also if you like doing the follower missions there are a tonne of followers to collect all over Draenor.
In all,the garrison does pay out there is no where else in Azeroth that you are safe, unless Blizzard changes it,hope not.
