Any PC experts out there? Computer Randomly Shutting Down playing WoW

I checked the DXDiag window and it only says “Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 171643).” It doesn’t mentioned anything past that.

I’ve read posts that some people with the same model have reflashed their BIOS to an older version and doing so had fixed the issue. I’ve never reflashed a BIOS before. What does that do exactly? Does the older BIOS handle the power supply differently?

I haven’t tried playing without the power adapter. I don’t recall if it’s ever randomly shutoff without a power supply. I may have to give it a shot and see if anything happens during a play through.

The BIOS or more properly UEFI, is the lowest level of system firmware. It is responsible for basically setting up the system and starting OS boot. It is also generally responsible for configuring things like the smart power stages used in the VRM prior to CPU initialization. Generally speaking flashing the BIOS even to the same version can fix these issues by ensuring the the power firmware is overwritten with the intended defaults. Depending on how the firmware was installed in the factory it can be a little off by default.

That said I’d try Northerlite’s suggestion first, the power draw from the battery is much more limited than the power adapter and could give us an idea of if there are power delivery issues. Flashing the BIOS should be our last resort here.

Alright so I left my laptop in an idle state for about 6 hours. I left it on with the adapter plugged in and with the cooling pad below it turned on. I returned to find that the computer was turned off. I cannot tell when this occurred since I wasn’t near it.

I checked the Event Viewer and the View Reliability Monitor to see if anything was unusual. I do not understand what the logged events are telling me. How do I display that information in this post?

I literally do not understand the nature of this issue.

I will not let it continue. i am going to try the above solutions when I get the chance to. This was just an update.

In the Event Viewer, selected events > Action > Save All events as… > drop-down box “Save as type” select “Text (Tab Delimited)”… name .txt file as “Events”. Save the file. Open “Events” in documents folder, copy/paste the selected text into the thread.

Thank you so much Vahren! Below are the events from yesterday until now.

Been on the forums regarding Bluetooth. Is your cooling pad using a Bluetooth connector? If it is can you disconnect it and try again?

My cooling pad uses a wire actually.

Oh, you mean a USB connector.
Leave it plugged in as it is for now.

One of the fun things I do with my own computer is to try to have no entries in the Event Viewer on boot. (I go as far as registry hacks and my Services are customized.)

I’ve spent a good deal of time studying things on the Event viewer. . That Bluetooth error is just a common timeout boot error. It’s likely a “Red Herring” as they say.

One thing that catches my eye are these entries - they aren’t boot related. They are only warnings though which generally can be ignored.

I also see one crash - with nothing indicating a cause.

How is your Power profile set up in Windows. I would set up things there for high performance while the notebook is plugged in. Should be some instructions on the Web.

Can you drop a new DXDiag report on Pastebin

It’s likely a “Red Herring” as they say.
Good to know… Thanks for that.

Can you test it without it plugged in. This is actually common with a failing power brick. Or a failing voltage regulator in the laptop.

I have actually see this power management pattern… with my own Lenovo T440s… it happened after the Spectere and Meltdown patches came out and the BIOS was incompatible. I’d google around and see if people have had similar issues. I’d also check Lenovo Vantage for system updates.

Everyone has given good advice, I just want to re-emphasis that you need to make sure your laptop is cool.

Even with a cooling pad, the pad’s fans aren’t lined up with the laptop’s exhaust ports or the fans are spinning the wrong way, it will affect your laptop.

IMO when a computer shuts completely down, its heat related.

I concur with Northerlite, based on my understanding of the issue setting the system to stay constantly in “High Performance” may prevent the issue. The issue seems to occur when the processor is trying to change power states (p-states) and something appears to go wrong. Locking the CPU to maximum power-state while not ideal due to power and noise could potentially prevent this from occurring. In the absolute worst case we can try disabling some of the mitigations. I’d prefer to test literally everything else first as that would mean potentially putting you at risk.

Not always . With some Lenovo laptops there is an ACPI firmware issue that can cause issues like this. I’ve run into it personally after the Spectre and Meltdown patches came out, and looking around on the internet it seems to be relatively common for this model as well although not necessarily directly connected to those patches.

As for heat the total dissipated heat for the machine is less than 110W total for CPU and GPU, and the cooler insofar as it wasn’t installed completely incorrectly should be fine for that.

I very much appreciate everyone’s advise. I am in the process of trying each step. I think we may be on to something hopefully !

The code is r9TDRnHq for the new DXDiag report.

I’ll give it a shot and see what happens. Without the power adapter, I lose FPS in-game. I’ll probably have to lower the settings to an optimal setup without the adapter.

I switched the power settings from balanced power to high performance and the issue is still occurred yesterday after 3 hours.

I downloaded the Lenovo Vantage program told me that there are no updates for your system. It provided a link to the Lenovo website and the linked page is just information on the laptop model page with the warranty.

The cooling pad just has a central fan underneath the laptop’s rectangular shaped fan vent.

Is the ACPI firmware a safety mechanism which turns off the laptop if it overheats? The laptop temperatures seem normal in game. They keyboard doesn’t feel hot at all. Just feels warm.

No that’s actually much more complicated to answer, as there are many things that can overheat. I don’t actually think this is a heat issue at all. More a power regulation firmware issue. ACPI is a BIOS interface that the OS uses to regulate the processor power state, if you’re curious you can look it up online. The issue is more that if the ACPI firmware does not respond correctly or manage power correctly it could under deliver power to the processor via the VRM. This would have the effect of causing the system to just shut off, potentially with a “Pop” sound (it can also be really bad for the hardware). If you’re curious there are videos online that explain how VRM work, but I suspect they’d bore most non-nerds or overclockers to death.

As aforementioned have you tried flashing the BIOS to either 3.00? or reflashing 3.03?

I have a feeling that this issue could be tied to what you mentioned about the ACPI failing to manage the machine’s power correctly. There have been instances where the computer would shutdown unexpectedly while surfing the internet or in the middle of typing up an email. These tasks don’t even require as much processing power as playing a game. I don’t think I had this issue with the previous BIOS version. It seems to have appeared with v3.03 and v3.03 came out sometime in 2016 right? I’ve bought this laptop in 2015 and it worked fine.

I’ve considered flashing the BIOS based on what I heard that it fixed the issue for other people with the same model. I’ve heard that its dangerous for the computer if not handled properly. What happens when I revert to an older version?

I’d also like to add that I’ve tried solutions from similar posts on this issue on the Lenovo website. Solutions such as disabling fast start-up or changing the minimum and maximum processor settings did not work for me. I’ve also tried not using any external devices like a wireless mouse or external drive but that hasn’t worked either.

Let’s try one thing first… it looks like Lenovo released a new ACPI driver for that model in 2018. Let’s try installing that first:

So, I went through the initial setup settings and it says there is a folder in c:\drivers\Energy Management Driver that already exists. I clicked yes then proceeded to the installation but nothing happens after that.

I went directly to the Energy Management Driver folder and clicked on the ACPIDriver and nothing happened. I tried running it as an administrator but still nothing.

…and what do you know? the computer shutoff again while trying to figure out how to install this update.

Update: I just read a recent post from the Lenovo forums. I am trying to attach a link to this thread but it is not allow me… I copied the post below.

Update: here’s the link https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Y50-70-Random-Shutdown-sudden-crash-with-a-pop-REALLY/m-p/4389552

Hi everybody!

Like many users on these forums and other sites I purchased my Y50-70 laptop, installed windows 10 only to be happily using it when suddenly there woud be a ‘pop’ soundand the whole thing would shutdown instantly.

Searching the forums many people suggested it could be the ‘COM Server application’ which appears in the event log of the system. People suggested altering the registrysettings to fix this -this reduced the problem but didn’t solve it as there would still be random sudden crashes. Others suggested driver changes, reverting a windows update, chaning the power supply, etc - nothing really worked and it stil crashed.

Now to the solution! Simply put - I changed the wifi card - why? I was thinking of changing the OS to see if Windows 10 was the problem.

After changing the wifi card my laptop has not crashed once - not once! This has now been over four months and I have had a perfectly stable system, it’s great! Also changing the card is really simple. Best part is, I’m still running Windows 10!

1 - I bought this ‘Broadcom BCM94352Z DW1560 NGFF 802.11AC Wifi Bluetooth 4.0 For Lenovo B50-70’ from www.ebay.com.au/itm/273363492201, if the link doesn’t work there’s plenty of these around.

2 - I installed it (really simple) with plenty of install videos like this one www.youtubecom/watch?v=YhTPRpiqlsY

3 - Windows detected it and it worked perfectly!

I’ve been wanting to post this for awhile hoping to help people who have this problem.

I hope this heps people on the forum, let me knowhow you go!
