factions just need to go because people discussing faction morality need to go
EDIT: i’m being generous i think horde players are tiring and before anybody comes at me for being a human paladin i’ve liked orcs to varying degrees (from on par to better) than humans since Warcraft 2 god i don’t even know why i feel obligated to provide that
It always feels weird to get thrown in with the mean spoopy bad alliance crowd because I was Horde for like a zillion jillion years and it never really totally wears away even under the blue icon.
Try being called a race traitor in Trade because you bring up the bad stuff a race has done on the forums, even when you’re using it to try and explain why X has done Y.
Players on both sides of the game are trashfires, but every time Blizzard writes the Horde to be the Generic Villains because their writing teams are a bunch of literary hacks and cowardly, plagiaristic vailures, it attracts the worst part of the fandom to be increasingly more vocal.
That Right there is the tricky part of this game. IC my characters are totally giving that side eye look of all “yo hey this ain’t good and we shouldn’t be doing this” especially myst who is actively trying to leave a dark past behind already.
But OOC I have always been all about the PVP side of “kill alliance and conquer the world” and I am usually the first one to OOCly tell nelf-ka-bob jokes. Cause I see pvp in this game similar to how I view Grand Theft Auto.
It provides me an outlet to go crazy and be super gung ho kill everything without hurting anyone. If I fire up Grand Theft Auto and run down a thousand pedestrians I can sleep at night because I didn’t really kill anyone. No one got hurt. Same with shouting for the horde while bleeding up several alliance in a BG and watching them just sorta…melt. Or gleefully laying waste to an entire camp of worgen like I’m Anakin and just lost my mother. I don’t feel guilt OOC even if my character IC would cringe at me.
Because at the end of my session, I log off the game and a thousand night elves didn’t die. A million draenei bones weren’t used in a causeway to war. There are times when I just like the mindless fun of watching the world burn…without actually burning a world or hurting anyone in the real one. These games give me an avenue to do that. To have fun and raise a little chaos.
So in that regard I don’t want to see factions go away cause more than likely blizz would flub that up and make it mean that pvp went the way of the dodo too.
Now as long as I can have my mindless slaughter, and if they did it in a way where pvp was still intact or even better, I would absolutely be all for the factions dissolving. But as much as I love bliss still. I don’t think I can rely on them to keep pvp. Intact without the factions existing as they do and that breaks my heart from an IC point of view.
The mages of Dalaran were only able to study orcs because of the internment camps.
It turns out when you are dealing with bloodthirsty maniacs hopped up on demonic jamba juice, you can’t just send them somewhere else. We saw what demon-fed orcs did in Ashenvale after all to people who had nothing to do with the humans.
Im just trying to figure out why i can be insulted and harassed, no matter what i reply with, but the second i make a jokey rebuttal to a reply insulting me im the bad guy
“Oh cool, this thread really expanded since I read it last. Time to go see all those blood elf storie-”
sigh
Well, I think about the best discussion point I can add is this analogy:
When A Little Patience came out, Tyrande’s portrayal really, really bugged me. I didn’t think it was true to the character, I thought it was embarrassing for both the character and the company who saw fit to put this portrayal in their game, but I still wanted to see Tyrande in the story afterward so that the story could fix its mistake and show her character ‘properly’.
I think a lot of people feel the same way about the Horde. They want to see that ‘stereotypical fantasy villain race but as actual people who can be good guys’ that they were sold when they started the game, and are frustrated with Blizzard writing them ‘improperly’ - but instead of throwing their hands in the air and saying “welp, I guess this story’s done. Pack the game up boys, it’s time to go home”, they’re holding out that the -next- Horde story will get them back on track, that the ‘real’ Horde (no, not the Old Horde. Or the True Horde. …we’re running out of Authentic Horde names, here…) would finally get shown in a manner true to who they ‘really’ were.
And I can’t blame them for that. Good guy orcs, peaceful minotaurs, protagonist zombies? Awesome! I want to play that!
Blizzard, wait- okay, you made them start some fights, that’s enough… can we get some more heroic roles to balance that o- oh, okay, you made them burn down another orphanage and eat some more puppies instead. Can I get that hero story now, please?
Honestly there’s a very obvious reason Blizzard chose the term “internment camps” and not something more generic like “prison camps.” It was specifically to draw a parallel to real world stuff which is… not great in this context, given that the orcs were literally evil alien invaders.
And yeah like I said earlier the only alternative was killing every orc that came through the portal, because they weren’t open to negotiations or anything like that. They came to destroy and dominate the world. “Demons made them do it,” and all that.
When you frame it that way, it’s really hard to feel sympathetic or look at them as anything other than Tolkien-style monsters. But if you talk about how they’ve been put in “internment camps” and used as slave-gladiators and so on, well…
So much could have been done if Blizzard had the spine to write a true ‘morally grey’ story, and I’ve made scores of posts about ‘what ifs’ revolving around letting the Alliance characters make in-character bad decisions and having to deal with the repercussions, about letting the Horde characters make in-character realizations that this shizzle isn’t working and trying to avoid the mistakes of the past.
But Blizzard won’t dare make a writing decision that might paint the white anglo-saxan Alliance as being in the wrong, and there’s a whole can of worms behind that I’ve been bashing at for years and this thread has already been turned into a screaming dumpster fire, so I’ll let that lie.
