During Covid they hired remotely and a lot of new hires were told it was 100% wfh. They didn’t even live in the same state as Blizzard HQ. Blizzard then went back on their word and is telling them to relocate. A lot of companies did this.
What they get it they relocate?
No pay increase.
Insane prices on everything - including rent.
Gotta change everything about their home life.
And an hour to two, or even more, commute per each work day.
No wonder Blizzard is losing high talent.

There’s already like two treads up about this. Let me summarize: No one has seen these employee’s contracts so speculating about them is pointless. Thanks. We can close the thread now.

Source? I dont believe this is actually true, it seems like a ticking time bomb to be put into contracts.

I know old folks that are just as selfish, it’s just younger kids can’t hide it as well.

Yea whats probably different now is ease in the ability to pick up and go.
Infrastructure and tech is better to just find another job. Employee driven market right now to. So staff can make an ask they want and hit the road if they dont get it.
Most dont understand what they lose with wfh, but thats their problem.
But wait for a recession and labor market contraction, then itll change. Comes and goes.

If people quit because they are now expected to show up for work then let them, that’s not the type of person I would want working for them anyway.

Moving to Cali means vehicle inspections and my car is def not up to par to pass Cali vehicle inspections. Cost of living is way too high too!
I’m cozy in KY with my house tyvm.

If one works from home, then one doesn’t need to drive as much, and therefore will save a lot of money from just the gas alone. Also, when companies were sending workers home, they weren’t cutting people’s pay rate, either. You’re complaining that the cost of living in a heavily taxed state is Blizzard’s fault. Maybe you should examine why the cost of living is so high in that state, and why that state is losing so much of its population, while other states are gaining in population.
Oh, you can’t spend that amount of time, since you have an agenda to push.

And its a terrible approach if its a one sided decision and not balanced with maybe needing to make compromise.
Think about it, folks that work at blizzard can probably have loads of opportunity in this industry and growth opportunity if they want it or negotiate it, and the catch is what? you go into the office.
If theres opportunity and growth then buck up. If there isnt that then why work there to begin with.
My guess is the ones leaving probably just want a job vs a career if on site work is a bridge too far. And to each their own. They all adults. But its not the drama ppl seem to make it out to be. Ppl come and ppl go.

When it comes to work, you should always put yourself first, period.
No company will EVER put your needs before their profit.
If someone was hired by Blizzard while living in another city/state, they have every right to be upset right now. Thankfully, they can take their skills elsewhere, or hopefully Blizzard will realize the mistake they made and change course.
Either way, I’m hoping for the best for the employees impacted by this blunder of a business decision.

Some people actually do this in my state, work in Boston live hours away.
Reason why I try to find work that is no longer than 45 - 50 minutes away.
MA is a sardine can compared to CA.
IF people have to find another job to meet personal needs, then let them.
Blizzard is a little indie company they would never open another office location anywhere.

Hard disagree. I been with my company for 10+ years. Do i work extra hours at times? Sure. Do i make sure i negotiate more pay or more training and ed for professional growth and my development? absolutely. Its give and take. A rising tide raises all boats.
But yes for those hired in another state there is a difference as having to move is bad. if the company wants you to move, my first question is great, heres what thatll cost in more pay and moving costs so im at the same situation.
Then say to the company your move.

I’m happy for you that you work for a company that does that, but I hope you understand that’s not the case for everyone.

Just to put this out there, but they went back on their word just days before the public announcement that the UK blocked the merger. I’m willing to bet the WFH allowance was only to make it pass the EU standard, and now that it’s not going through, Bobbyaga is back to his old tricks again.
Also, ending WFH knowing a lot of employees can’t go to the office now is something corporations are doing instead of layoffs these days. It’s called “quiet firing”.

Where’s the contract?
Because all I’ve seen is that these ‘talented’ people are pronouns-in-the-bio, dyed hair, unironically making teas and soaps on the side, Wiccans who would never survive in any office environment, let alone moving out of their house for more than an hour.
