I was hopeful Blizzard did a good thing for once with Anniversary servers but there are just too many people per layer for the game.
This game was not designed for the density of players it has.
The layer code needs to be tweaked to force more layers faster. Or you need to split the server.
It’s really unfun to have 20 people everywhere you try to go in the game. It’s basically unfun to do any open world activities because you will be PVPed all the time.
Not that I care since I play a rogue but for other classes it has to be miserable.

Layers have been so strict this time around. Before you could get stuck in layers and never see anyone.
Layer code doesn’t need to be tweaked. They did that and made it worse.
Layers need to be removed. Need another server or two.

Layers would work too but they can’t figure out how to form an if statement in whatever code the server uses.
If players > x
make layer
If players < x
remove layer
How hard is that? Look problem is solved. Their spaghetti code from interns is holding them back.
You have no idea what you’re talking about
They can make and remove layers faster. They did it in SoM.
People complained they didn’t see people so they changed the code and now we have a disaster in Anniversary.
They just need to make another version of the game we don’t have enough:
- Retail
- Classic cata
- Classic era
- Hardcore
- Som
- Sod
- Anniversary
Maybe make a few more for an even 10.
No they just NEED to fix layers.
Layers do seem to be jank
I wouldn’t be opposed to splitting the server if they offered free xfers off the servers if they die/reach below a certain player count, having to pay money because blizzard can’t fix a problem they create is kinda cringe
are you sure MMOs are for you?
Probably not. I like WOW vanilla but I used to only play shooters.
That’s why I gank lowbies. It’s like playing an action game where I win.
Atleast you’re finally winning.

part of an MMO is to have moments where you are alone / with few people
like in real life. if the game is programmatically making sure you’re constantly surrounded by people, that’s not right.
Nightslayer has about 140k players, classic servers in 2004 had 2500-3000
how can anyone think this is okay
Did no one play on a “full” or “high” population server back in 2004? There were a lot of players all over the place.
Retail is empty. I would rather not make classic as empty as retail is. And with 2025 technology we should not have to keep playing the stupid server juggling game. I want to be able to stick to one server, log in, and find people in-game.
Splitting up the servers is how we get dead servers, only to then merge them later anyway.

No idea, imagine having a gathering prof to make gold, jk… just do dungeon gold farms, oh wait… they were nerfed for everyone but mage (aside from DM:T).
I played on Malganis, a sever that activly had a 2k waiting room at peak hours, but the amount of players in game would never exceed a threshold of about 3k. Which made the game playable, its is comically different from today’s layered system.
I played on Deathwing (started on Cenarius day 1 then moved to Frostwolf but ended up on Deathwing around when BWL was out). It doesn’t seem like there’s an abnormally high number of players out in the world compared to what I remember from back then.
Then again I was used to Crossroads getting wiped out by level 60’s every couple hours. Plus when the game first came out they did not have dynamic spawn rates so finding creature spawns was really painful no matter where you went.
People have it easy these days with dynamic respawn rates based on how many mobs are dying in an area. The only pain point for me is the sometimes absurdly long respawn times on named quest mobs, but that is again nothing unusual for vanilla.
I think people just don’t have the patience anymore, which is completely understandable. Most of us are now adults with jobs and other hobbies. When I first started playing wow I was a kid with no responsibilities and no other games to play. Nobody wants to wait around for mobs to tag these days especially when you can just go play retail and not have to wait.
