The Boondocks is technically not an anime because it is American made, but the style is close enough that I also consider it one as well. Might ruffle some weeb feathers with this opinion.
Which is how I like my anime for the better part. As I said above. The Americanized stuff is the best because it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Tbh they could do with some feather ruffling. And maybe a shower.
Hey, Sentenzå, how are you this evening? You good?
Not evening for me. Work from home day. “Work” from home…
Mainly I think that animated content is better for telling fantastical stories while “regular” shows or movies excel at stories more grounded in reality in some way.
There’s a ton of Japanese animes that aren’t so serious! Chainsaw Man, Kaiju No. 8, and Zom 100 come to mind immediately.
Some animes can get a little cringey with their hero moments, yea.
Like others have stated, anime is an umbrella term. It’s literally just the abbreviated word for “animation.” Japan loves abbreviations and combining words. As an example, CAPCOM is the abridged form of “capsule computers” (arcade machines) derived from the full company name, Japan Capsule Computer Company.
Shounen (boy’s) and shoujo (girl’s) anime is heavily marketed towards teenagers and is generally what people are thinking of when they hear the term “anime.” Shows that feature protagonists that are in highschool are extremely common. Shounen tends to focus on action (Dragonball Z, One Pice, Naruto, etc) and shoujo tends to focus more on relationships and romance (Sailor moon, Fruit’s Basket, Nana, etc).
If you want more adult-oriented shows, you need to look at seinen (men’s) and Josei (women’s) anime. Shows like Berserk, Black Lagoon, Nana (this particular show is considered both shoujo and josei), Paradise Kiss, etc.
Yay, another Wotakoi enjoyer! Probably my fav rom-com ever.
I cannot remember when, Cata maybe, the focus shifted to players being the main character. Which is why we have all this hero, champion, Hobo Death Dealer of the Timeways stuff now.
I think that’s a very common reaction, there’s a lot of cringe out there and it’s easy to write off anime as simply that because of it. There are so many shows though that I think if someone takes a look I think they’ll find something they’ll enjoy.
I like good stories, and I don’t care what medium they’re told in.
I farmed a lot of Anime back in Shadowlands
Season 1 of Robotech is basically a hacked up version of Super Dimension Fortress Macross, which is a pretty huge franchise in Japan.
This might blow some people’s minds, but both the original Transformers and G.I. Joe cartoons were animated by Japanese animation studio Toei Animation, who also created some of the mega-popular anime such as Sailor Moon and One Piece. So if you watched those cartoons as a kid, you were watching anime whether you realized it or not.
old anime good
new anime bad
Prefer fantasy settings, and because of the oversaturation of isekai works, I’m swimming in worlds of magic and dragons thanks to anime.
Only issue I have are degenerates sexualizing characters built like children, but think they get a pass cause its a thousand year old dragon.
Yes, FF is rather anime. And if you don’t like “anime” that’s fine. Someone who understands the nuances of human communication will understand you mean specifics subsets of anime and not anime as a whole.
For instance, you may enjoy Full Metal Alchemist but dislike Naruto. They’re both anime with different pacing and maturity levels. Or you could be someone who likes Black Lagoon but dislikes My Hero Academia. Again, both are anime but the differences are clear.
Using anime to describe anime you’re not fond of can surely be deemed as rude, but that’s a larger issue at hand. For now, I’d say it’s pretty clear you mean lots of current day anime with its cheesy tropes and meh stories. So yeah, FF is there.
I am into the more fantasy type anime a new favorite for me has been frieren journeys end. It is so good.
Anime is significantly better than anything the west has put out in a decade.
Just have to find the good ones and the ones that hit the genres you enjoy, and you’ve got years worth of content to get through.
Anime is great in the same way as, say, Mad Magazine was/is great. It’s good for what it is but any intellectual will see this as nothing more than adult cartoons with a humongous gap in worthwhile story telling compared to book and film and to a lesser extent live action television. It’s a low culture product.
