Anduin being meant to show non-toxic masculinity is hollow

looks at the camera like Jim from The Office

If I was writing for Blizzard I would pump up Anduin’s masculinity, toxic or not.

I would make him Azeroth’s version of Pelinal Whitestrake and have him go mental. It would make the character actually interesting and give the Alliance some much needed internal conflict, Horde doesn’t even need to be involved.

I said it in another thread Toxic masculinity doesnt exist.

It’s neat you’re comfortable being wrong in multiple threads I guess :man_shrugging:

I am right in every thread so far.

Normally I’d expect a MHP to be the one posting the ridiculous Pelinal stuff but honestly? Pelinal was a boring character that purely existed to feed fantasies of being oppressed by the existence of elves in human players, there’s nothing interesting about the character even with Kirkbride’s non-canon out of game nonsense.

To be fair…the writer said Anduin was actually getting through to Garrosh and had the stupid bronze dragon not interfered there’s a chance he could’ve been redeemed pre-death.

Who cares? You?

Anduin slaughtering people by the thousands is FAR more interesting than the meek, timid mouse he is today. In fact it’s more interesting than literally anything going on right now. The character is boring, the current story is boring. Flip the table.

What do you want Anduin to be?

We’re talking about the same guy who’s directly confronted multiple ‘evil warchief’ characters without stuttering, and even managed to get into both of their heads through mere conversation right?

‘Genocidal Psychopath’ isn’t particularly interesting of a character trait in comparison.

EDIT: To be clear; I don’t really like Anduin, but his characterization is pretty far from ‘timid’.

Ah, yes, let us just repeat the Arthas storyline. SO interesting…

I’ll take psychopath over a heart to heart conversation every time. Blizzard is terrible at it.

In a video game with limited real estate for dialogue and character devleopment, Anduin’s alotted time is spent talky talky. And not early GoT seasons level of talk but bland, “I see the good in you”, “I will do what I must”, “For the Alliance” generic zzz…

I’m not serious when I say make Anduin a psychopath but are there seriously people out there that enjoy the way he is now? They must be a minority because I don’t see many.

I won’t really say anything to ‘fixing’ his character; other’s are more qualified on that account.
But getting him to fight more for his dedication wouldn’t hurt; on the extreme end maybe just have him embody ‘Friendship through Superior Firepower’.

I am not really a fan of him, but it does not mean that there are no usable ideas in his articles. The creator’s bias and desire to push the specific view all things be damned creates very troublesome story elements.

/offtop
A good illustration would be a d’n’d session that I encountered at one point, where the story led to a witch house, and unfolded into a combat scenario.

Witch was kind of powerful, but a player with a paladin character managed to get such ridiculous dice rolls, that she should’ve been evaporated. To that the GM said “NO! She did NOT die!!1”. Like, c’mon, really?

Similar thing is here. There can’t be a solid 2 faction narrative, because there is the way to behave / act. There can be no “morally grey”, because there is the unquestionably right path and everything else is different degrees of badness. There can be no valid opposition because nothing else is allowed to be valid. There is no not-facepalming faction conflict, because it’s Anduin of all people, can a horde player be happy about a perspective with a “lucky roll” to kill Anduin in a confrontation?

And so on. The rippling effect is vast and a lot more damaging than might seem on a surface. To the identity of the game, to how the flow of the story and consequences of events are treated, etc.

So, here the idea of “kill your darlings” does look like it make sense, because it’s not a statement about creating a cinematic, showing how for 20 minutes Anduin is beaten to death, but because the concept of authors bending the rules or using only convenient elements to favourably show their preferred ideas or characters, devalues the other elements that happened not to have a such vocal proponent in the dev team, even though they also might be liked by some players.

Stephen King’s works should be studied by psychologists and anthropologists to better understand the mindset of your typical working class background Boomer from the mid 70’s/80’s. During that time period he was perpetually doped/drugged/blitzed out of his mind that his subconscious couldn’t help but spilling across the page in a wet hot viscous mess.

It’s the same with black people in The Stand (a novel I loved), the only characters specified as black are:
-A drug user who survives the pandemic but dies from an OD because he is unaware that suppliers cut their product
-A military unit that rebels and starts a race war
-A literal Caribbean pirate on Team Bad Guys
-old magic black woman who leads Team Good Guys (tbf she at least is more than just a stereotype, she has agency and a critical role in the plot)

It’s pretty cringe.

On topic: Anduin desperately needs a foil, otherwise he’s bland and boring.

He had one in Varian until even he got lobotomized. Not even human potential™ can save you from Anduin. Even Sylvanas is feeling it.

And sadly there probably never will be one as anyone who disagrees with him gets Wrynnsplained or written as being wrong by the narrative If Tyrande isn’t in the middle of being butchered in writing. The writers are extremely biased when it comes to Anduin.

I’d trade anduin for varian in a heartbeat.

I think Genn’s father-like attitude towards Anduin is underrated. This is the same guy who literally “built the wall” (remind you of anyone?) to protect his ‘superior’ breed of humans (he’s quoted saying his men shouldn’t die to protect the rest of the Alliance) and turned his back on the Alliance. There’s a lot to be said about how protective he became over Anduin during Legion and how Anduin slowly chipped away at Genn’s toxicity.

As well as him almost consistent ignoring his daughter in favor of a son replacement IMO.

I dont think he is ignoring her so much as she is just a pretty independent woman at this point doing her own thing.
