I liked at contrast in the crowd reaction between the retail War Within, Season of Discovery, and Cata Classic announcements. One of the three had far less energy than the others.
It really isn’t “Classic.” We should call it something else, like Post Classic Cata, or something like that.
Cataclysm Part Deux
I’m looking forward to Cata.
I don’t remember it very well.
Whether you think cata is classic or not, a lot of people wanted it. For a lot of different reasons. Cata got a ton of crap back in the day because wotlk for a lot was their base experience. Its where a lot of people started and ended. We also saw the emergence of wow clones throughout wrath and well into WoD. Rift was probably the biggest one, and DCUO/Swtor being the other two.
Just because subs drop doesn’t mean the game is suffering, it means people have moved on. For what reason, we’ll never know all of them. I’m sure some were that the heroic dungeons/normal raids were far more difficult than that of wotlk. It could also be that for a lot of people who played WoW then, they also played warcraft 3. And warcraft 3 frozen throne really focused on Arthas rise to lich king. And we finished him. It was an end to a story and most people had no attachment to deathwing, in fact I had no idea who he was til I looked him up back then.
I remember the world changes being praised anywhere I looked because the world went from this convoluted mess of questing to a linear open world leveling experience. The game for 2 expansions prior had been the destination, not the journey, so the journey needed to fun and enjoyable and prior to cata shattering, it wasn’t for most.
Dragon soul was also a short raid, a disappointing end boss to an expansion, and included LFR which was incredibly controversial. The end of cataclysm was nothing short of a giant controversy of the game itself. Then they had blizzcon and announced “pandas ew” to most, pet battles, and monk class. 3 things most people who were playing at the time didn’t consider to be warcraft. Had they actually been playing warcraft since the RTS they’d know it was a matter of time for monks, the surprising thing was pandaren race and pet battles.
Nowadays you’ll hear people praise MoP to heaven and high moon, and why? Most raids were incredible to most, the class designs, even if they were ultra unbalanced/busted, were fun as hell, and overall when you step back and look, MoP had really unique and beautiful environments.
We’re going to have this some controversy about cata classic when we come to WoD classic. The difference is, it sounds like blizzard is open to change. Titan rune dungeons were a blueprint for this and it sounds like we’ll get something similar in cata or maybe just raw scaling. This means they’re likely going to change some of the negative aspects in the communities eyes in WoD to something more positive. If there’s anything blizzard has done right on a repeated basis, is release fantastic dungeons/raids for the most part. There are a few duds here & there, but every expansion seems to have some banger raids if not multiple or all. And this is where most of the wotlk and now going into cata classic community is, dungeons & raids. So long as that is desirable, we will eventually see a dragonflight classic, lol.
As for myself? I loved cataclysm, the raids were fantastic gameplay wise, the dungeons were rough, but fair. The design changes to classes is where we started to see some really cool experimentation, and it is a stepping stone for MoP class design and for some classes, even better in WoD. I’m eager to see it, they know we want to get through cata quickly, which means we’ll most certainly see MoP without a doubt.
They should just ditch the “Classic” tag and use allllllll that creative brain power they pay for every 2 weeks to come up with a new name for this cycle.
All they have to do is add Zidormi and the classic world will be there if we want. Seems a simple enough thing to put in, but they’re sticking with ‘no changes’ on THAT.
Maybe let us keep the old talents too. I don’t want my death knight tank to be blood, ever.
The Classic world, yes, but not the classic playstyle. Too many changes happens from Wrath to Cata to enumerate. I would not play such a mishmash. Let us keep Era servers of all three “Classics”.
I hope LFR is in at Cata launch so it can feel extra classicy like the brand new ‘pick a new ability you once had every once in a while’ talent system.
I can’t wait to zip around orgrimmar on my flying mount waiting in queues like everyone else on my faction.
Imma punch Deathwing in the face.
Then my Cataclysm moment is over.
Ok maybe start a bar fight on the Speedbarge too.
This is activision we’re talking about here, not Blizzard. Blizzard died years ago when they merged with activision.
Activision only cares about one thing…profits RIGHT NOW. They don’t have any long term plans, all they care about is their results as they are happening. If they think that in order to maximize the amount of people playing their game RIGHT NOW they will offer everyone 6 different versions of WoW to trick them into playing in order to maximize as much profit in the short term.
