I was recently permantently banned for “Abusive Chat” despite this being my only chat ban and never receiving a silence before. I have received two, one-day bans for character names but that’s it. I was wondering if this type of escalation is normal or not
You can always appeal the account action – the instructions should be in the e-mail sent to you.
Each appeal goes to a different individual to review, to ensure fresh eyes on the subject.
It can be, if the violation was severe enough to warrant it.
If you’ve had licenses in the past that were also closed to repeated language violations, I’m sure they may also play a factor.
If you believe the action was taken in error, you can continue as Amaelalin recommends until they tell you to stop and that further tickets may result in further action.
Not exactly correct, Gethus.
This license was silenced in 2021.
Suspended twice in 2023, very short suspensions.
Suspended three times in 2024, slightly longer suspensions.
So this is essentially the seventh action on the license.
Is permanently banning people for language really a thing? Jeez.
Like I get the whole dont swear in our game, and be nice to people, but to permanently ban someone for mundane swearing is insane. Good luck with your appeal.
Enforcement is for sure a lot more strict than back in 04/05 no matter what anyone tells you. You just cant get away with what you could on here 20 years ago.
With enough incidents, yes.
Folks just have to accept its a different time now I guess.
Gone are the wild west days of the late 90s/early 2000s internet. What a time to have been alive though.
You could get a license closed back then too, depending on what you said and how often. They keep track of every account action on your permanent record at Blizz. Yes, they seem to actually have one.
What has changed is how easy it is to report someone. You no longer have to make a manual ticket with the name, server, chat channel, date, time, and context of the conversation/violation. Very few people bothered. Now right click reporting captures that info for the GM without extra work on the part of the player. Much more efficient. Technology does change things, but the rules have not changed.
People have been trying to argue that language should not be penalized since the start too. This is 2006.
Yes I am well aware. I’ve seen you repost that several times. Hence my
People were actioned for language much less then with a larger player base. Thanks for your post though. My source is I was actually there, and playing the game 18+ hours a day for the first 5 years it was out. All I did was live on the game and on the forums. You got away with more back then. It is what it is.
I’d say not curbing your behavior is what’d be untoward.
Anecdotal evidence is not sufficient in the face of actual company policy that has been proven.
General “you,” not you in specific. Sorry, I should have been clearer.
But that wasn’t a result of enforcement, necessarily. They still did it, which would lead one to logically assume it was about the efficiency of reporting them back then, or the lack thereof.
Today it takes less than ten seconds to report someone. Back then it could take 2-5 minutes depending on a variety of factors. Path of least resistance and all, a larger number of affected players would just think it much more effort than it was worth.
It doesn’t have anything to do with enforcement.
Thanks for your input though. The fact that folks try to deny that it was not drastically different 20 years ago in silly. You werent there 20 years ago like I was. Its ok. We’ll agree to disagree on this one. Have a nice evening.
The penalties aren’t any harsher, it’s just much easier to report now. That’s not a bad thing.
Dont get me wrong. The modern system is very good even if it is prone to abuse.
Abused how?

The fact that folks try to deny that it was not drastically different 20 years ago in silly. You werent there 20 years ago like I was.
It’d be a good idea to stop belittling others like this - you don’t know who played years ago or not, don’t assume such. Much less when something that is a moot point to make.

You werent there 20 years ago like I was
Yes, and Blizzard was here before you were and they made the policy that was shown to you. We’ll agree to disagree.
Well for starters the folks who spam report people simply because they dont agree with them leading to temporary silences until a GM looks at the logs and sees a person was spam reported and silenced for nothing and overturns it. Lets not pretend that doesnt happen as we see posts from people in this very CS section being silenced and it overturned.
