I’m in a comfortable position, so that’s going to be me most likely. Need a new GPU though. Pegged at 99% and only 130fps in a non-intense area
Save your money and go to eBay and get a used RTX 2080. Not even the super just the regular 2080 to hold you over until 2022. Just make sure you replace the thermal paste the moment you get it.
It will cost you roughly $400
not a big enough upgrade imo
that’s like 10-15% at best
and i won’t enable RTX in wow, probably.
Need 30%+ (ideally more) for it to be more perceptible
Really, 3070 is the minimum meaningful upgrade
Well that’s true and untrue at the same time. Im on a 2080 atm but it’s an aib card and it’s overclock to high hell. You could get something similar and you would be probably sitting around 50 to 60% usage instead of 99%. But I get your point
Well the 2080 is roughly 10-15% stronger.
Napkin math (I know, utilization isn’t absolutely linear, ballpark figures):
At 130fps, a 10-15% improvement is maybe 143-150fps. In areas with stuff actually happening, it’s closer to 100-110fps. Which means a 10-15% improvement is 115-127fps. Display is 144hz.
Point is 15% improvement overall isn’t going to drop usage from 99% to 60% when even with the improvements, maximum FPS is under the vsync cap.
And usage aside, 130 fs 150fps isn’t noticeable, and neither is 100 vs 115. Especially for $400.
On my eight cores; one is being pushed at 60%+ utilization, one is around 30-60 utilization, and the rest are under 30 often sitting around 10.
Did you see my other thread?
Regret has settled in and I don’t even have the card yet.
Without RT it’s looking like the RX 6800 (non-XT) might be the best bang for the buck. We’re talking about spitting distance from the 3090 perf in WoW depending on the content.
This is my thread on another forum lamenting my poor life choices:
https://linustechtips.com/topic/1273305-impulse-purchased-a-3070-now-regrets/
That said, all the AIB 6800s appear to be $660-$700 and 6800XTs are $800-$900.
And of course, completely gone already.
I tested on a 1600X years ago when Windows would load 1 thread. Linux balanced perf across all 6 cores much better. Linux also has much better CPU management (like 45% better CPU perf in cases).
WTF?!?! Ripoff IMO.
6800 AIBs
6800XT AIBs
My guess last night on pricing was about right on the high end 6800s.
It’s been a while since I returned anything to newegg but they don’t charge a restocking fee to un opened items as I recall. I believe you pay for shipping though. I honestly would not buy a CPU or GPU until February as supply is way too low and demand way too high. Your 5700xt should be handling WoW with ease at 1440p.
It is, I just have the bug.
I HATE the bug.
Worst part is I’m pretty sure I could come out ahead, if I sold this card. Could easily get MSRP + 50%.
That’s kind of crappy, though. I won’t do that. Offering it to my friend for MSRP for just the card, and I’ll eat the cost of the PSU and just hold onto it for a spare.
You can. The 5800x has been in and out of stock on antonline almost daily also if you dont mind spending 40$ over MSRP you can get them on ebay if you watch ebay. They pop on and off ebay for 488-500. I got my 5800x for $495 on ebay. The 5800x was in stock all day yesterday on antonline for $450. 5800x is VERY easy to get considering its the oddman out. Most people want 5600x or 5900x.
I am only on it till I can buy a 5900x then I will sell it
I’m actually focused now on scoring a 6800/XT.
I don’t have much to add to this debate on who’s doing better but honestly as of late the NVIDIA drivers have been hot garbage. YouTube started stuttering at points and this was found to be a known issue 3-4 updates ago. FPS gains are minimal in a few games but seeing losses in other games (WoW included).
So having no experience of AMD, how are drivers doing these days? May influence my decision on what I’d be picking for my next card…
I can’t say much for both sides since stock is limited for both teams.
Can only go off of previous gen. AMD tends to take a little longer to work out the kinks.
But to be fair, the early adopters are just beta testers for those who can’t get a hold of a current gen gpu.
So far my 3080 is good minus the EVGA software turning back on my LED profile once I make it to Desktop. (I do not like unicorn puke at 3/4am in the morning). Oh…almost forgot it black screens for a sec when running WoW. Definitely a driver issue since it was happening with the 1080ti.
My 5700xt that is being used by a friend of mine, is working flawlessly. Was also working perfectly fine when i was handling it for a little over 6 months.
Id say they are on par in wow. As I have said before… Intel can use faster ram. The moment you have a manually OC i9 10900k and add RAM over 3900mhz you will have the edge in every game. However the 5900x will blow you away outside of gaming due to 2 more cores.
Can you delid an AMD processor or is there any need to ?
They’re soldered. I know der8aur did one once on an older APU - I don’t think it did much.
here’s extreme OC on a 5000 series
