AMD gpu driver timeout, blackscreen

this has been happening snice i got this gpu in march 2023. its probably happened over 1000 times and ive submitted 100s of error reports. trying to play classic anniversary but the amount of black screens basically makes the game unplayable. its crazy this hasnt been fixed yet even with AMD releasing gpu drivers claiming to fix it.

ive tried tons of fixes but nothing helps. used DDU in safe mode many many times, tried every driver, even tech preview ones, and nothing has fixed this. the joy of this game is crushed as ive lost hope this will ever fixed. sadface

Quick search shows something about shaders, they seem to rebuild after a driver update. Suggestion is to wait for this to happen, which could take several minutes, and I’m seeing mention of this back to 10.2. Also mentioned trying DX11.

yeah every time you use DDU all shaders for all games are recompiled. dx11 does work better then dx12, but even dx11 black screen 5 times in one day

I have a 7900 XT, and have scarcely had this issue. I’m still using the AFMF2 preview driver (which was stable even for later releases, such as Space Marine 2).

My suspicion is that this has to do with the the driver default boost clocks, or power settings, but I could never reliably reproduce this issue.

It’s been months since I’ve had a driver timeout. Windows 10 LTSC IoT 2021.

Jealous you scarcely have this issue. I do wonder if its more a windows 11 thing. I found the tech preview driver 24.20.11.01 to be really stable in most games but wow would still black screen.

Currently on 24.10.1 being the current, in my exp every driver i have tried has black screened in wow but only wow and no other game. I have put 2k plus hours into Squad and zero black screens.

I do limit my clocks to not boost super high, and also use the high performance mode for wow. For the 19 months ive owned this card i have tried countless solutions and various configs but none have worked. I honestly dont know what to do about it besides one day they maybe actually fix it.

I’m running on 24.20.01.02, and the only time I could semi-reliably force the timeout was with a hefty undervolt, but it was still very random when it would occur.

Currently, I run an undervolt/raised limit with a 7900 XT Sapphire Pulse. By default, it was set to run the boost up to 2657 mhz or something insane. I’m not sure it was actually attempting to do that or not, but on mainline drivers the timeout was occurring regardless of settings.

Sitting with:
500 mhz Min (Default)
2450 mhz Max
1025 mV

2626 mhz VRAM (Default Timing–Fast is known for massive instability)

Power Limit +15% (max)

SAM is enabled, but that’s not really relevant.

I don’t really have advice for this, other than that it was, effectively, solved for most people several months ago in a couple of back-to-back driver updates. My PC is not setup to be standard by any stretch of the imagination, so it’s difficult to relate to most, especially Windows 11.

More of tweaks I’ve done to my PC, and full specs, in this thread of mine from a while back. Whether or not there’s any useful information in troubleshooting the issue, I couldn’t say. This was aimed at trying to improve performance from doing Queen Ansurek and Broodtwister Ovi’nax, though, rather than solve any stability-related issues.

well I appreciate your help on the matter, ill take a look at your post and see if i can try anything new. i kinda feel like if wow or amd do more fixes that resolves it is basically copium at this point. but i guess we will see
