I’ve had one since cata plus I have a smart phone .
So it isn’t an issue for me but that’s my experience . Others may have a different experience so I don’t think since it is this way for me then it is the same for everyone .

I’ve already bought an authenticator tied to my account…so now I have to either buy a phone or buy another app???

There are people who don’t have access to food or clean water in this day in age, and in the wealthiest country in the world. I know of some food stamp assistance programs that would give people who qualified a free mobile phone and service but they were flip phones.
There’s people who struggle all over

Can they sell me a valid phone number to set up SMS Protection/Phone Notifications too? that’s the real issue here. Mind you, Prepaids don’t work.

Yeah, but they aren’t subbed to a $15 a month video game so they aren’t our concern in this context. If you have enough money to waste on video games then you have enough money for a cheap and used smart phone. lol
Probably not but my point was pretty much everyone’s situation is different.
I think it’s mostly the prepaid numbers being blocked that’s causing issues for most people cause honestly, I know like 2-3 people who still do pay as you go plans. Everyone else does prepaid cause it’s the same service but way cheaper.
Sorry but the authenticator that is sold on amazon DOES NOT grant access to custom text in LFG or the bag slots. I know it says you need an authenticator, but you actually need SMS authentication to get access to those features.
There are plenty of reports of players who have phones that blizzard does not accept as valid. Prepay / No Contract phone plans , VOIP, etc.

One of the issues is , the new LfG does not work with the key fob one and you have to have the mobile one for certain things in the LfG to work. That is the main reason people are complaining . They are just asking for options like make the fob work with it , have a code sent via email that can be used .

Depends on the “prepaid”
People have been having success with Tracfone, but Cricket creates problem.

The LFG DOES work with the keyfob one, but you ALSO have to have SMS protect as well.
Yeah I use Mint and mine works. I can’t remember if the number I have now is the same number I brought from AT&T though.
Someone said Cricket uses cheap garbage numbers or something.
THing is you don’t have to have a recurring sub for this game . You can spend $30 every 2 months to play and for some people saving $30 every 2 months is cheaper then spending $ 30 every month for a phone plan .
Oh it does work ? From what I have been seeing from people is that the fob doesn’t work with it .
If you have the keychain Authenticator but no SMS the LFG DOES NOT work. If you have SMS and no keychain authenticator it DOES work.
They likely don’t have SMS protect.
Considering upwards of 75-80% of the first world has smart phones (not just cell phones, smart phones) and amongst wow players that’s probably higher, it’s really a minority this affects.
If you’re in the US you can get a free smart phone from the gov’t if you’re that poor.
While that is good and certainly can help with account security, the feature in game requires both the Auth and the SMS phone notifications.
Both have to be set up to unlock the custom text fields (and 4 extra backpack slots).
