I think the problem is, that because Blizzard didn’t lay any groundwork for Void Elves existing before they were recruit-able as an allied race, that they needed a lot of lore/in-game attention post-recruitment to make up for it… and they did not get that, even though there were several opportunities for it.
I understand where he’s coming from. Unlike every other allied race, Void Elves don’t exist until they are recruited. Whereas all the others, even the Lightforged, for as little screen time as they had in Legion relative to the Highmountain and Nightborne, had some groundwork laid so they when you recruited them, you already knew who they were and had some background.
With Void Elves there’s nothing until the recruitment scenario. Alleria’s Argus arc is the Alleria story, not the Void Elf story. The term Void Elf doesn’t even come into being until after the recruitment, and Umbric and his squad’s origin have nothing to do with Alleria’s progression on her own path to mastery of the void.
The High Elf Wayfarers and Silvermoon Scholars likely have more in common with Alleria’s arc on Argus than Umbric and his squad do, assuming they are learning to master the void in a manner similar to Alleria.
I like the void elf. I don’t like that they are just trying to turn them into blood elf look-a-likes. I wish they would have just kept their theme and designed new customization around that. Ya sure they will still have their skins and hairstyles but after they get done just copy pasting all the blood elf customization to them, and if they give them nothing new that is voidy, they will just be a knock off of a horde race. Not interesting anymore.
If it makes you feel any better, once the hair issue is settled, and the High Elf aesthetic can be completed, my next goal will be to campaign for more void-themed customization options. I just need the High Elf aesthetic finished and then I’ll be all about pouring on the purple.
Well if you look at the lore it was the alliance that pushed the blood elf’s away with racism. Then their leader is in outlands so guess who is going to help them get there? Sylvanus. Aka the horde. Then they were thinking about going back to the alliance but then Jaina pulled that little stunt in Dalaran. So the blood elves are pretty much over the Alliance and see them for the monsters they are.
But did they need to have any ground work laid out? What happened to them was this sudden, weird accident that not many people knew about which is why Alleria has been seeking them out.
I found in general that most of the allied races didn’t have much screen time.
I’m hoping that maybe we’ll see more of the allied race stories in shadowlands but i’m pretty sure all of the allied races are gonna be pushed to the backburner on account of all these old, well-established characters returning.
And then after you get the voidy items you’ll start asking for something else right? Maybe the blood elf ears and their green and gold eyes. Then if Blood Elf get something new you guys will be like, ok we need that now. When is enough going to be enough for you guys? I feel like this crowd is the only ones that will never be happy and Blizz should just say screw it at this point and not give you guys anything until all the other core and allied races have as many face and skin tone options as Void Elf. It’s not like you guys will be happy and content about anything anyways.
I feel like they did need groundwork because that is one of the biggest criticisms people had with them. They are called a “butt-pull” because they basically appear out of nowhere.
And Alleria didn’t seek them out because of their accident. They were transformed after Alleria sought them out. Alleria was trying to bring the Blood Elves back to the Alliance. When that fell apart she sought out Umbric’s group who were exiles… but still Blood Elves. Then they enter Telogrus and become trapped by Prince Durzaan, are nearly turned into void-ethereals and rescued by Alleria and the player.
They are basically just Blood Elves dipped in void paint. That’s their origin. And it kinda sucks. Every other allied race had a far more organic establishment. Void Elves could have had some foundational development in BfA, but every opportunity to do so was missed.
I mean sure… why not? But probably not for Void Elves. I’ll have everything I want by then.
Nightborne are probably next on my list to focus on though I have been posting in support of their desperately needed rework for as long as they’ve been in game and continue to support it. My post history will verify that.
I’m also a big proponent of Blood Elves getting the Darkfallen aesthetics so they can be RP’d as San’layn and Dark Rangers.
I’ve also recently seen the calls for Trolls to get beards and have been throwing some likes to posts relating to that lately since I didn’t even realize they don’t have such an option.
This! And don’t you wonder if that had happened if there would have been an outcry by the Alliance wanting to play them?
And Blizz has continued to drop the ball with the Void elves by apparently forgetting about them story wise. At least the foxes got a little town and stories in their zone…Mechs got an island and quests…
At first I was not a fan of them. Now I’ve grown to love their concept and almost all my characters are void elves. Hoping for more void customization in the future
Personally i don’t think they need much more.
I mean people seem to focus so much on the fact they are now void elves that they forget who they are. They are high elves/blood elves. All of that lore didnt suddenly go away.
They actually have some of the richest, deepest lore in the game. What did blood elves do in BFA? Nothing.
So when you take into account that they were blood elves up until after legion ended, they have more lore and history than the blood elves do at this point.
Could we learn more about their relationship with the void? Yes
But look at vulpera. How much do we know about them and their history? At lot less than we know about the void elves.
What that said, this is the part where their background really needed fleshing out and where opportunities to do so in BfA were missed:
Could we learn more about their relationship with the void? Yes
Had Void Elves had some development during BfA during all these void-centered occurrences, it could have done them a world of good to differentiate them from the Blood Elves they were until Durzaan’s trap zapped them.
