Alterac Valley - what would you like?

Reviving a dead topic - I’m conflicted since as a person who used to play classic, I don’t want to see any changes to the game but feels like AV 1.5 would have been balanced and much more fun as an epic pvp war BoFA never got with T2/T3 gear - NPCs were definitely way too strong against T0 Blue gear and few could tank them, leading to prolonged fights, but I don’t know - what do you all think?

The simplest solution, let us queue up for say either 1.5 or 1.12 version.

If one if clearly superior we’ll find out

Classic players should be able to experience old AV again. The zerg style of AV is not in the spirit of the BG.

Zerg AV didn’t happen until reinforcements were added which was long after vanilla.

Zerg AV happened when they introduced the buying of gear with the BG tokens.

1.5 AV was part of vanilla. Not everything has to be 1.12.

I never got to experience the original long lasting AV. By the time I hit 60 and tried it it had changed and usually lasted around an hour, still fun but… always wanted to see the original. That’s what people remember, and I hope they implement it. It’s relatively obvious that it’s what people want, almost no one’s asked for the faster version that came later.

A prolonged fight was pretty evidently the original idea. They didn’t have the generals not regain health on leashing because they expected the first time a raid seriously engaged one of them to be the last.

I see no downside to having 1.5 Alterac Valley. It’s certainly within Classic’s timeline, and no one’s ever said “no changes from patch 1.12” except as a strawman.

I can’t pretend to recall the specific iterations off the top of my head but the one with Korrak at the Iceblood graveyard and the quests for the Goblin Shredder (as crappy as it was), etc.

The key thing is that farming for ram riders/wolf riders, escorting the flight masters, summoning lok/ivus, etc. should be KEY in winning the matches.

I want to see the Alterac Valley where you would join on a Friday, leave the BG after playing a few hours straight, and log back in the next day and the SAME AV is still raging.

I really would prefer a full-fledged 1.5/1.6 AV experience but it seems very unlikely to happen: https://youtu.be/hhKkP8LryYM?t=1878

sac·ro·sanct
adjective

adjective: sacrosanct

  1. (especially of a principle, place, or routine) regarded as too important or valuable to be interfered

But just in theory how do you know and why does it matter? If you’re not going to play through who cares what partial game you join.

Early version of Av with terrain /bug /exploit fixes.

Additionally:
-force join raid group
-remove mob experience
-remove gathering nodes
-disable fishing

Basically all the things that players would do other than actively participate. IE no leveling in the zone, or herb /ore farming

Finally… if memory serves, there was a change to looting corpses that occurred that was an important change, as in the very early stage of vanilla people where just running around spam looting everyone else’s work for their own rep.

It wasn’t a bug and shouldn’t be removed, we want all those low levels to level up as fast as they can after all from turn in quests so they can be less of a burden.
Exp doesn’t hurt and ice barb is an awesome early leveling weapon.

Doesn’t sound classic.

Well i’d rather have an av where I can summon a boss and alliance aren’t zerging and dragging drekthall out on the afker hill and kill him there in the first 10 min.

The original AV was kind of a wishlist of what some dev wished wpvp had been. It ended up just being a Bg that didn’t really work.

Could you clarify which parts didn’t really work? Everyone around me didn’t like the AV changes at that time, granted it may not be representative of what the community thinks but I’d like your thoughts on it.

It worked very well.

It just didn’t fit with an instant (figure of speech, not literally “instant”) gratification, convenience oriented mindset. Blizzard poorly chose to try to cater to that mindset at the expense of the game.

Forced raid group was in late vanilla versions… It was added because less ethical people could just hide in an obscure corner and no one would ever see them to even know to report them as AFKing.

Nothing is stopping people from doing the in AV quests… I’m talking about mob kill experience. I leveled two characters in vanilla entirely inside the av gnoll cave from 51-60… It would have been 3 had bgs been out in time for my first toon. I was also 100% useless to the battleground in doing so, no better than an AFKer sitting in the cave… Sorry if you think that kind of play /exploitation is either intended or should be allowed, but you would be wrong. I’ll also do it again if it’s not fixed, simply because it saves my alts time from having to get the av rep post 60…as will anyone/everyone else who knows about it and wants the free rep.

No it was a design that just didn’t work well as a BG. Maybe there’s a reason the other two BG’s didn’t see major changes in vanilla?

The PvE elements in the original AV were way to strong for it to be an actual pvp experience.

Maybe it was because those other two BG’s already catered to that mindset.

There’s a reason why AV became a zergfest.
