The majority of the playable races in World of Warcraft use apostrophes in their names. In fact, it’s easier to list the races who don’t use apostrophes than the ones who do.
Can we PLEASE gain the ability to put a single apostrophe in our characters’ names, our hunter pet names, and our battle pet names?
It would go a long way into allowing greater immersion.

1 space in our names, that’s all I want. Is that asking so much?
But if I can’t have a space, an apostrophe would be acceptable.

We should have access to one apostrophe in our names.
Many Characters do. If no Characters did, I could understand the limitation. But so many characters do, it is a part of the setting.
Spaces would be weird though.

Why would spaces be weird? It would let us have first and last names like alot of NPCs do.
I mean, having last names would be fine. If they were like titles that we could see or not.
But spaces in one name would be weird. That is different than last names.
Then people would make phrases like
Eat Me

Well, yes. People would definitely misuse spaces…but I feel certain that Eat’me would also exist
That looks almost Elvish though, so I am OK with that. Doesn’t have the second capital letter that a space would have with Eat Me.
Apostrophes would be great. Last names too. But I can’t go along with the space in a single name.
According to raiderio we have 37 characters with eatme in their name : )
One of them is a 488(wow) demon hunter named eatmeilldian

EQ has had surnames since 99’, and I’d really like to see that added here as well. They also recently added apostrophes in player names, and their tech is light years behind this game.
Just last year they moved to 64 bit, and are currently flubbing their way through the move from DX9.0c to DX11. If those hacks can do it I’m sure even the new guard here can as well.

Unlocking your surname at lvl 20 in EQ was a real milestone achievement on the path to max level.

If they allow an apostrophe, I would like an option to use a hyphen as an alternative.
Imagine all the names that could be made.
Surnames would definitely help with the “that name is unavailable” crap. Especially if blizzard is going to stick to the ridiculously long amount of time they hold names on inactive characters/accounts.
At the moment there are no names in World of Warcraft that use hyphens, however, there ARE a LOT of names with apostrophes.
As two perfect examples, it is ridiculous that:
- when you tame Ban’thalos, you cannot name it “Ban’thalos,” and
- you cannot name Fol’ya pup just “Fol’ya”…
As a raid leader: No way in hell, please.
Decent chance if someone cared enough to, he’d get a free name change courtesy of Blizzard and likely a free step up that penalty volcano from wherever he currently is.
I knew a woman in WoD who played a druid and hunter only and always made some kind of sexual innenduo in both her character and pet names. She got like 2 or 3 forced renames before she got an actual real suspension (forget how long).
That and last names. Oh the possibilities that could open up with Last names.
We’ve seen apostrophes and hyphens. I propose a choice between one apostrophe, hyphen or space.
Was this changed? I thought named beasts kept their name when tamed. I’m almost positive my nelf hunter has Ban’thalos with the correct spelling.
edit – never mind, just checked - no apostrophe. I’m guessing it defaults to “spirt beast.” That’s dumb. We should definitely be allowed an apostrophe.
