Allied Race Unlock (Resource Guide ) For Returning Players

Hi everyone,

My thinking, this resource guide I put together could help returning players start the process of unlocking allied races. So, welcome.

As you may have guessed, I’m a returning player who skipped Legion and BFA. When I returned for SL, I was happily surprised we could unlock allied races in Legion and BFA xpacs (Pre-Shadowlands patch, exalted rep requirements removed). Keep in mind I used the level boost prior to SL launch.

During my travels to unlock these allied races, I spent a chunk of time reading up on where to start, quest snags I ran into, some phasing issues and missing side/bread crumb quests along the way, especially to unlock the Nightborne (Legion) – Kul Tiran, Dark Iron Dwarfs, Mag’har Orcs and Zandalari Trolls (BfA) that involve completing the required Ready for War and War Champaign (not all allied races) achievements beforehand.

I’ve been unlocking the allied races on my human priest and bloodelf priest, and it’s been a ride. The resources below helped me a ton and I’ve decided to help out players on this forum for anyone interested to take on the daunting task of long Legion and BFA quest chains, that in the end lead to the ‘very much’ earned unlock achievements.

Resources I draw from:

  1. BtWQuests Addon: - A must addon. I suggest using this addon, it’s extremely helpful to track your progress.

“A quest journal that shows your progress within quest chains in a simple and easy to follow manner, showing not only your current quest but also all the future quests in the line, how they all connect and other quest lines they lead to or require”.

“Quest lines are now packaged within separate addons per expansion”:

  • BtWQuests: Battle for Azeroth contains all quest lines including the leveling zones, War Campaign, and 8.2 and 8.3 quest lines
  • BtWQuests: Legion contains all major quest lines for Legion, including class campaigns and story quest lines

  • Zaramux The Gaming Dad has relevant videos pre and post SL launch uploaded within the last few months covering various and complete guide achievement unlocks, including Ready for War, the War Champaign and Allied Races.

I hope this helps anyone wanting to unlock allied races and please be welcomed to add anything else that I missed and/or players could benefit from. Please also feel free to ask me questions, I’m on the forums regularly.

Thank you for reading and happy questing.

So just to let people know if you play alliance and want to unlock the races make sure to lock a character at 50 so you can still queue for the dungeons for the races. Otherwise it becomes a lot more difficult.

Correct Waraim. The Kul Tiran unlock are gated behind four dungeons. I had to form my own groups which took time away from unlocking them sooner.

Hello,

I’m so lost. I spent days completing the achievements “Ready for War”, Zandalar Forever!" and “Tides of Vengeance”. I thought I read somewhere that the reputation requirement was no longer required in Shadowlands? I can’t seem to get this mission in the Orgrimmar Embassy that all the guides are talking about.

Am I missing something?

Do you have any quests (or are you eligible for any quests) that might be causing Orgrimmar to phase? A big one I can think of is the end of the War Campaign where Sylvanas is confronted.

You, my friend, are my hero! :hugs: . That is EXACTLY what it was, I just had to take that small quest that triggers that cinematic. I cannot thank you enough!!!

How do I unlock the Allied Races if there is no one in the Embassy who can start the quest for me?

Hi Amaranta,

The quest giver inside the Embassy whether in Stormwind or Orgrimmar will only provide you the quest to unlock an Allied Race when you have met certain achievement requirements. Some Allied Races have more achievement requirements than others. Below are just a couple of examples in order for the Embassy to provide you the unlock quest(s).

  • Mag’har Orcs and Dark Iron Dwarves - Ready For War achievement required.

  • Kul Tiran - Ready For War, War Champaign, Tides of Vengeance, Lore Master of Kul Tiras and A Nation United achievements required.

Refer to my original post at the top where I discuss resources to dive into, and if you like, look into downloading the addon BtWQuests from curseforge.

Hope this helps

You need to be level 45 for the Legion allied races and 50 for the BfA ones. Beyond that, my previous post about possible quests causing phasing in Stormwind/Orgrimmar is the next thing to look at.

In my grueling, yet ultimately successful grind to acquire the Zandalari Trolls, I discovered that I also have the pre-reqs for the Orc race, yet I cant figure out how to unlock them. I read the requirement for Honorbound rep is no longer required, and while I am honored with them, I havent really pushed to get that rep. All it says is to go to the embassy in Ogrimmar, which I have. The Ji guy is there but he has no quest or anything. So my question is, what else do I have to do?

If I recal you need to check the banner and then go talk to Ji to get the quest. After getting the quest go back to Zandalar and head to the portal room. There should be a nightborne mage that will take you to alternate Dreanor

So I went back and clicked on the banner again, then Immediately turned to Ji and clicked on him. And he says:
It’s always good to see you. Let us work together to strengthen the horde!"

No quest, no nothing else. Same as its been the other 100 times Ive done the same thing.

Check and see if you have any quests (or are eligible for any quests) that might cause Orgrimmar to phase. The end part of the War Campaign is a common problem point. Doing any such quests will be necessary to move Orgrimmar back into the correct phase for the Allied race quests to be offered.

The fact that we have to do a quest of any kind is silly. i have NO IDEA where to begin let alone the time to dedicate to trying to run dungeons, farm anima, soul ash, rep, renown honor, conquest, etc, etc, and find time to go to school, work etc etc. be nice to just be able to select them, since this is a completely different expansion and all. and it would show that Blizzard respects our time. its not like the genre of MMO is like it once was.

You were right, I went back and there was one last thing to do, Caverns of Time. Thanx

At least the rep grind is no longer required to unlock the allied races pre Shadowlands patch.

I’ve recently returned to the game and haven’t played since MoP… you can imagine the confusion. I saw the allied races and wanted to get farming right away, so I talked to panda at the horde embassy, checked the totems for the races, completed the quest and that was it, didn’t get anything else. Checked the warcheifs herald, the board next to him, inside the command room… no one has any quests. The only quests I have myself are only the Shadowlands campaign. Would this phase it out? Or do I need to complete BFA? If so, where do I start those quests?

I don’t think that starting Shadowlands will phase anything out, although if you start it, make sure you do the intro at least up to the point where you open the portal from Oribos to Orgrimmar just to avoid any headaches.

Allied races now have two parts to them. First, you need to meet a questing requirement (generally that’s involved with the race’s story) and then you need to do an unlock quest. (You can do the questing achievement and unlock on separate characters — which is useful as some of the achievement parts carry over between factions.)

The questing achievements involvement vary significantly between races.

The Zandalari and Kul Tirans basically require you to do the vast majority of BfA content. You’ll need to do all 3 leveling zones, a special questine that opens after those are done, and do the War Campaign up to getting the “Tides of Vengeance” achievement. (Although it should be noted that Horde side, doing all of that will also complete the requirements for Vulpera and Mag’har Orcs.) To start BfA content, pick up the quest “Mission Statement” from the Herald near the Warchief’s Command board in Orgrimmar.

Highmountain Tauren and Nightborne require Legion questing. To start that, you’ll want to choose the Broken Shore option from the Warchief’s Command board. As you follow the quests for it, you’ll eventually open up your class’s order hall and get your first artifact weapon and eventually have you pick a zone to level in. For the Highmountain Tauren, you’ll unsurprisingly need to quest in Highmountain. For the Nightallen, you’ll need to do pretty much everything in Suramar. You’ll also need to unlock world quests to do some of the later Nightfallen stuff. (Which on your first character requires getting friendly with each of the zone’s main factions.)

Well, I’m incredibly frustrated. All I “Think” I have left to do to is the Tides of Vengeance war campaign in order to unlock Zandalar Trolls (really want to make a zandalari brewmaster). But… how do I start?

Game gives me no indication whatsoever what the requirements are or where they even begin. I’m bouncing around a half dozen different wiki pages/reddit threads that tell me "Start by talking to [person] but… that person has nothing to say! Do I need rep? A lot of posts mention rep, but they’re old. Are they talking about the rep requirements for races, which I know were removed? Do I still need rep for the war campaign?

Man… BfA started out so much and most of the journey was really cool, but it feels like I waited in a long line at my favorite taco truck only to find they ran out of tacos by the time I got to the front.

The most likely sticking point for the War Campaign these days is getting your Heart of Azeroth and unlocking World quests. To get the Heart of Azeroth, pick up the quest “A Dying World” from the Earthen Guardian NPC near the Zuldazar harbor flightpath. Once that is done, the quests for the War Campaign (and unlocking world quests) will start with Nathanos on the Banshee’s Wail in Zuldazar Harbor.

If you’ve already got the HoA and unlocked world quests, then telling us the last War Campaign stuff you did would be helpful for finding your place.

Getting the Heart of Azeroth is a weird point as when BfA was current, you had to get it before you could even start on BfA. They removed that in Shadowlands, but you still need it to unlock BfA end game stuff. So, it’s not in any of the older guides, because it was assumed as part of the original BfA intro.
