I don’t think you understand what the word “viable” means in this context.

Like most people defending bad specs, I think you may have missed the point. No one said you “can’t” raid as any spec. The point is that you “shouldn’t”, as they aren’t all properly supported, nor equally perform well. When raids have to choose between a class that is best at its job, and one that is second rate… 99% they’re going to pick the better choice. There’s no shortage of warriors, rogues, mages, warlocks, and even hunters. This means there’s basically no reason to slot sub optimal roles like elemental shamans or balance druids.

The melee hybrids at least have the option to swing a nightfall. Shadows get shadow weaving. But these are raid wide affects. If you aren’t A) best in class, or B) have a raid wide debuff, then most guilds will tell you to find a different guild. They don’t want to meme spec and struggle with content. They want to do what’s best and get content done, preferably as effectively/quickly as possible.

When the content can be cleared by less than 40 under geared, under leveled characters in leveling greens nothing is off the table.

Since you seem to have granted me the power, then let them all do what they wish*

*disclaimer: you will have to live with your choices.

Well said.

Jagermeister, I understand what you are saying. I, myself, am a big fan of 'underdog" specs because I enjoy the challenge to play them well.

But, there is a reason a lot of players use the meta specs. They work best in raids and instances.

Friends may be fine with your spec choices but you are doing strangers a disservice. Players want to overcome the challenges placed before them.

Not failing because an individual decided to play an oddball spec. You are an obstacle to their enjoyment of the game.

Agreed.

If I wanted to maximise my productivity, I would cancel my subscription and go read a book instead.

Too many confuse viability for optimization, and treat people poorly for it.

Let the mages be fire.

Raids cap at 40. It’s not like the tight tuning of 20 man Mythic Raiding now.

There was always room for a dozen or more “sub optimal” specs back in Vanilla and it’s even more true now. No Raid leader has to choose since for most Raid leaders getting anywhere close to 40 is the issue not choosing who to bench.

You can roll whatever spec you want…if you’re in a guild that will allow you to do that.

Heck, you might even be able to get into some pugs if you lie.

The thing is these specs really are viable. Druids can MT some naxx bosses and are arguably the best pre-naxx geared tanks for them (you know… the gear you have when you first enter naxx day zero)

Ret paladins - they can maintain middle of the pack dps with great gear prior to naxx at least.

just have fun with it. with 40 people you have room for error which makes classic so much more fun imo

All the specs are viable, they just aren’t all optimal.

Need to edit this to explain the differences.

Being viable means you can help complete the content. Being optimal means you can help complete it in the fastest manner possible.

Just find like-minded people. Classic isn’t going to change. No need to rush the content. Why not look at raiding at different angles instead of locking ourselves in a “let’s get this done quickly and efficiently” mindset? Find a guild or group of friends that wants to enjoy Classic the way you do.

They are viable… just not optimal.

And I agree with his sentiment…

The Min/Max culture of this game will hurt it’s longevity. People have to realize the community is what makes this game… and if people constantly alienate others and try to OCD control their play-styles, it will contribute to this game dying.

People in greens at level 55 are viable but the pre raid bis pally isnt.
ok
First sulfuras NA is with a ret pally btw. He also uses greens.

To be fair other than Enhancement and Ret, no one really wants it.

Static content is breeding grounds for min/maxing though. Unless you manage to find a chill guild, people are going to demand only one type of ranged DPS, one type of melee DPS, one kind of tanks and one kind of heals. Shamans, druids and paladins should all have disclaimers when you pick them that say “No hardcore raiding guild will take you. Hope you like to PVP!”

ok i let you

Min/maxing is inevitable in content that doesn’t change though. If classes/specs aren’t being buffed or nerfed, then there’s no guessing room needed as to which might be good for some content and which won’t.
