All currently missing race/class combinations, ranked by how much new writing they would take

There’s a lot of demand for a lot of new race/class combos, but some of them are a bit of a stretch.

Blizzard obviously can write whatever lore they want, but having a solid foundation already there makes a new combo easier to implement.

No new writing: There are already examples of these race/class combinations in game, they just aren’t playable for some reason.

  • Draenei Rogue: The Rangari are composed of both Rogues and hunters, Mishka is a Draenei member of SI:7 and a Rogue, and there half a dozen Draenei pirates strewn about the Rogue order hall.

  • Night Elf Paladin: There’s already two Night Elf Paladins in the Paladin Order Hall from Legion, and even if you’re not a fan of those, the Sisterhood of Elune has always been pretty militant so they could be added without their help.

  • Lightforged Monk: The quest where the Lightforged are unlocked follows the Lightforging process of a Draenei monk. Their is no reason the Lightforged wouldn’t have monks among their ranks.

  • Tauren Rogue: There are several notable Tauren Pirates, and the Grimtotem Tribe has Rogues.

  • Undead Paladin: There’s a laundry list of undead paladins in game, and the Forsaken are largely from the dead of Lordaeron, the people who literally invented paladins.

Very little new writing: Thematically appropriate and would take no new lore, just an acknowledgement that something that could have happened did.

  • Dwarf Druid: The WoW RPG books claimed the Wildhammer dwarves had Druids, and while it’s not technically canon, there’s nothing in canon lore that contradicts it. All it would take is acknowledgement that those were actually canon.

  • Gnome/Worgen/Kul Tiran/Mechagnome/Pandaren/Goblin/Troll/Nightborne/Mag’har/Vulpera Paladin: These races have priests and access to heavy armor, which is really all you need for a paladin.

  • Human Druid: Both the Gilnean and Kul Tiran humans have access to druids. Stormwing human Druids could easily be Gilnean and/or Kul Tiran druids using the Stormwind model, or just Stormwind humans who picked Druidisim up from the aforementioned groups.

  • Worgen/Goblin Monk: The explanation for why these two can’t be monks was timeline issues, but Exiles reach removes that excuse entirely.

  • Void Elf Demon Hunter: Void Elves are just Blood Elves who were present for The Incident™. Just say some Blood elf Demon Hunters were present for The Incident™

  • Lightforged Rogue: Logically the Army of the Light would have had scouts and assassins, but we’re never shown any specific examples of them.

  • Kul tiran/Pandaren/Tauren/Highmountain Warlock: Never really saw a good explanation of why these races never had warlocks. Who cares if it’s frowned upon? Everyone frowns upon warlocks and that didn’t stop any of the other races that have them.

  • Pandaren Druid: Most Druid races learned how to be Druids from Wild Gods, and the Pandaren have their own pantheon of Wildgods to learn it from.

  • Troll Demon hunters: Daemoniacs are described as something between a Warlock and a Demon Hunter. They were recently reconed from being Zandalari to being lesser tribes who work with the Zandalari, but the Dark Spear are a lesser tribe that works with the Zandalari.

  • Tauren/Highmountain Mage: Arcane magic is just a science, anyone capable of reading can learn to use it. Tauren, presumably, can read, so they’d be capable of training to be mages.

  • Highmountain Paladins/Priests: The Highmountain Tauren worship An’she just like the Mulgore Tauren, so it seems reasonable they would be receptive to the teachings of the Sunwalkers.

  • Zandalari Warlocks/Demon Hunters: Demoniacs are described as something between a warlock and a Demon hunter. They were recently retconed into trolls from lesser tribes who worked with the Zandalari, but they could easily be retconed back into being Zandalari.

Some new writing: Would take some new lore, but remains appropriate thematically and would be in-line with existing lore.

  • Draenei Demon Hunter: We already know that Illidan’s forces included Broken Draenei, and Shadow Lord Iskar shows us that people suffering from the Curse of Sethe can regain their original form through Fel magic. All it would take is saying that some of Illidan’s Broken survived the trials, and being fel infused gave them their old bodies back.

  • Human Shaman: There are technically examples of Human shaman in game, but they’re typically portrayed as insane. That said, Humans are known for their diplomatic ability, so they could get “shaman” that bargain with the elements on equal terms, like Goblins do.

  • Night Elf Shaman: Night Elves are well known for their reverence of nature, but the nature Shamans deal with isn’t quite the same as the nature Druids deal with. It would take some writing to explain how Night Elves came to revere them both.

  • Void Elf Paladin: Blizzard seems intent on Void elves being the Alliance’s High Elf representation, and that should mean having paladins. But Void elves as they are now were part of a group researching void magic, and a paladin isn’t likely to have been involved in that.

  • Lightforged Shaman: The Army of the Light split from the main Draenei population before arriving on Draenor, and Draenei only began practicing Shamanisim after Draenor was blown to smithereens. However, the Lightforged are still Lightforging Draenei as shown in the quest to unlock them, so normal Draenei Shaman could have become Lightforged.

  • Orc Druid: Orcs do not have a happy history with plantlife, but they’re close allies with the Tauren and there’s at least one orc NPC who’s debatably a druid.

  • Orc Demon Hunter: Illidan’s forces in outland included fel orcs, and while we’re told that not many survived the trials to become Demon hunters, we have no idea how many “not many” is, so it could be enough for playable orc demon hunters.

  • Undead Druid: Being mostly undead humans, the Forsaken would have undead Gileans and Kul Tirans in their ranks. It stands to reason some of those would be druids, and the Kul Tirans specifically practice a kind of death Druidisim that the Forsaken could use.

  • Vulpera Druid: There isn’t much in the way of Vulpera lore, but what little we have includes a Vulpera who’s tending to what little plantlife there is in Vul’dun. Just establish that he’s a druid, and that there are other Vulpera who studied under him.

A lot of new writing: Would take a lot of new writing. Maybe a new lore figure to define how exactly this combination came about.

  • Draenei Druid: Draenei are not typically known for Druidism, but they practice shamanism without issue and could easily learn Druidism from one of their allies.

  • Night Elf Warlock: Night elves have a long and bloody history dealing with demons, but outlawing things only makes them more appealing to the new generation. With the Legion gone and Teldrasil burned, there are plenty of reasons a Night Elf might decide to dabble in fel.

  • Worgen Shaman: Harvest witches were a primitive form of druidism, so one could make the argument that some of their practices resembled shamanism more than Druidism. Blizzard would just have to be the one making that argument for it to stick.

  • Blood Elf Druid: Blood elves have no particular reverence for nature, but they have been known to dabble in nature magic. It would take some effort to explain why they got shapeshifting without being taught by anyone, but they could pull it off.

  • Orc Paladin/Priest: The main universe Shadowmoon clan did have Priests once, but they were almost completely replaced with Warlocks before they even arrived on Azeroth. That said, if those Priests were to return, they would almost certainly find a way to include axes, which would give orcs Paladins as well.

  • Undead Shaman: The Forsaken were allowed in the Horde only because the Tauren wanted to help cure them of their condition. The Forsaken abused this to develop the blight under the Horde’s nose, but it’s possible some Forsaken were genuine in their desire for help, and could have picked up Shamanism from the Tauren in that time.

  • Nightborne Druid: The Nightborne were originally night elves, and it’s possible, but not likely, that some could have retained their druidistic traditions in the ages they spent beneath the sheild.

  • Highmountain Rogue: The Highmountian Tauren don’t really have need of spies and their scouts are hunters more than Rogues, but they’d still logically have some criminals who reject the tauren’s traditional values in favor of subterfuge and stealth.

Extensive new writing: There is basically no way to justify this combination without a major change in how this race or class behaves.

  • Draenei/Lightforged Warlock: Not impossible, but it would take either the reintegration of the Manari Eredar into Draenei society or some kind of push to “rehabilitate” demons in Draenei culture.

  • Dwarf/Gnome/Human/Worgen/Lightforged/Dark Iron/Kul Tiran/Mechagnome/Pandaren/Goblin/Tauren/Undead/Nightborne/Highmountian/Mag’har/Vulpera Demon Hunter: Unless something big happens, there’s no reason for new Demon Hunters to be trained, and it’s unlikely that these races will be retconed into having already had the training.

  • Gnome/Mechagnome/Goblin Druid: Gnomes and Goblins aren’t particularly interested in nature, and much of their technology seems outright hostile to it.

  • Gnome/Mechagnome Shaman: Gnomes aren’t too concerned about nature, and unlike goblins they don’t have a deal making nature to explain it.

  • Void Elf Druid: As cool as tentacle beast forms would be, Blood elves weren’t exactly the druiding type, and Void elves are even less so. That said, Displacer beast cast form would be amazing.

  • Void Elf/Blood Elf Shaman: High elves don’t serve their magic, they bend it to their will. This is possible with pretty much every form of magic except shamanism, which requires consent from the elements.

  • Lightforged Druid: Same reasons as Draenei Druid, but with the added obstacle of not having shaman.

  • Dark Iron Druid: The Dark Iron dwarves live in caves full of lava with no vegetation to be seen. It would take a hell of an explanation to give them Druids.

  • Nightborne Shaman: Nightborne aren’t known for having reverence for nature, and having been isolated for centuries they’re unlikely to have had many dealings with the elements.

  • Mag’har Druid: The Mag’har have just as bad a history with plants as their main universe cousins, and unlike them the Mag’har don’t already have an NPC giving them a foot in the door.

  • Mag’har Warlock: The Mag’har are district from the MU orcs in that they explcitly rejected warlocks. Violently. You could argue that some warlocks from the Shadowcounsil never received the Felblood and remained in hiding, but they would have had to high a very long time in order to not be killed on sight.

Bear in mind this is just how much writing I feel these combinations would need. You’re free to disagree, but stay civil about it.

Just make every class available to every race. No reason to keep them separate anymore. Regardless of lore. Let people play what they want.

I agree that every race should have ever class, but some races are a lot further from every class than others, and would need additional writing to get there.

You’ll notice that even my lowest tier doesn’t say impossible. Just nearly impossible without extensive lore developments.

Just because there are “demand” for it doesn’t mean they should happen. There are actually some combos that should be removed. Not a single one should be added.

If you don’t like them then you don’t have to use them.

Some of us are actually capable of imagination and don’t need every single option spelled out for us.

This is a terrible argument when talking about lore. Holy crap.

I think undead should be able to be anything humans can be. Human paladin dies, becomes undead, loses paladinship?

I’m not talking about lore right now. I just wrote a massive essay about lore with bullet points and everything, if you want to talk about lore then read that.

Right now I’m talking about you being a butt just because some people are capable of having fun in ways you don’t agree with.

You gave an example of why undead could be druids but put undead shamans lower. In bfa there was a kul tiran undead shaman, Thomas Zelling

Blood Elf Shaman and Druid could very easily have been explained during BC by having them drain the mana out of a minor Elemental Lord or via a Wild God from Zul’Aman. similar to how Blood Elf Paladins drained the Light from a Naaru. not entirely sure how it would be done now though.

We should have servers where lore restrictions do not impede game restrictions tbh. These are nice for the normal servers though.

Tide sages are a blend of priest and shaman, but in my opinion Zelling was more of a priest.

Plus he was the only one, and Sylvanas killed him the moment he stopped being useful.

We’ve been asking for Gnome Paladins for years. We got Gnome Priests instead. :sob:

I’d offer a small possible correction about your list regarding tauren mages. Didn’t they have runereaders or runemasters or something like that which could tie into the class that way? It’s something that could already be there if Blizzard was interested in tying them together.

Tidesages are how they explained kul tiran shamans though lol

Isn’t that just Light Forged Draenei? Or are the wings and whinging about sacrifice what make you a demon hunter?

So are you arguing for all races can be all classes? I hope Blizzard never does this.

The little restrictions we do have keep this game from being World of Elfcraft, which would be very boring.

You’re right. But they’re also how they explained Kul Tiran priests, and Zelling behaves more like a priest than a shaman.

In general? Yes.

Here specifically I’m not arguing for anything. Just ranking all the combos we don’t have by the amount of new lore they would take.

No it’s players like you, who wouldn’t play an elf if someone held a gun to your head that keep this game from being World of Elf craft.

If anything this would improve things on that front, because it would give you more non-elf options for some elf dominated classes.

No they become death knights because the light leaves the body of the dead Paladin…

The only class that needs more non-elf options are Demon Hunters. The rest are fine.

And I know nobody would be holding a gun to anybody’s head, making them play an elf. Never said that and that wasn’t my point. I just enjoy seeing different races and Blizzard not allowing butt elves to roll Shamans and Druids makes sure that I’m not going to be wading through a sea of elves.
