I have played this game for ten years, granted mostly PvE until the honor levels were made account-wide in particular. Having played a lot more, I realize there are nuances that confused me for a long, long time:
- Jargon: List out the popular acronyms used like EFC, which actually could be interpreted as “carrier of the enemy flag,” which isn’t what’s meant at all.
- Inevident rules: The flag doesn’t appear on the map for 45 seconds in two BGs, but appears instantly in one of them. List these nuances. TIP: Make it 15 seconds because in this day and age they can be and usually are in mid by then.
- More detailed maps: In Seething Shore, how many of you can identify where “Bonfire,” “The Plunge,” “Tower,” etc. are?
And so forth. Any more additions anyone else would like to see?
I think there’s value to this idea, because it can be hard to pin down some of those specifics if you’re new to the game or unfamiliar with a specific battleground.
I can relate because there’s still a few BG’s that I’m not very familiar with because they were introduced during times I wasn’t playing much or I had them on the blacklist. Unfortunately, asking a direct question about rules in /bg chat is often not that helpful.
The template they use for defining the responsibilities of DPS/Healers/Tanks in the PvE Adventure Guide would be helpful in giving players an idea of what they should be focusing on in the various BG’s. There’s information on the internet, but as you would expect with fan-made guides for a 15-year-old MMO, much of it is outdated.
The only thing is I don’t want people missing plays with their nose in the Adventure Guide while their objectives get ninjaed. But I’ve seen that anyway with people who don’t use the minimap.

You don’t know how spot on this is. I am being told left and right that tanks don’t belong in BGs this expansion and actually had a DPS refuse to play until we AFKd him because I wouldn’t switch specs.
in that case afk that dps into the ground.

Doesn’t work if they just fight enough to not die. There’s playing and there’ “playing playing.”
if 5 people report them afk in a short timespan, they’re gone whether they are active or not.
Do you have any idea the EFFORT it takes to get five people to report one? Did you intend for me to play at all during this time? During an epic, sure; during a regular BG, iffy at best.
CTF = capture the flag
EFC = enemy flag carrier
FC = flag carrier
COTEF = carrier of the enemy flag (never used in the history of the world … of Warcraft)
Get out of mid = there are no flags there, go and kill the EFC you fools
Kill the healer = target the enemy healer and press buttons, thereby making it possible to kill the DPS that were previously being healed and now are not
Peel = CC/kill the players that are killing your healer
The EFC in a CTF map (warsong gulch, twin peaks) doesn’t appear on your map until spotted. Obtain eyeballs. Put them to use.
I hope that clears up some of the confusion.

The jargon list is brilliant and needs to be in-game. WoW being 15 years old now, with Classic, it might be time to let some of the old inconsistencies stay in Classic. For new players playing for the first time, why does it make sense that a flag on the Pandaria map appears right away, then it should on all, or you need to tell us) because inconsistencies make this go from a headache to a nightmare that takes literally a decade to wrap your head around unless you play PvP constantly, which, granted, I haven’t.
“COTEF” is what I first interpreted “EFC” to mean because it’s a compound modifier lost in an acronym, and compound modifiers need hyphens for clarity for this reason exactly. “Enemy flag carrier” could be seen by the reader as “enemy flag” together first or “flag carrier” together first and really confuse the issue. So, it’s “enemy flag-carrier” instead of “enemy-flag carrier,” which actually isn’t intuitive because of the wording order chosen by yon brilliant acronym inventor.
Sometimes in the heat of battle I type:
“Everyone please stop what you are doing and re- orient yourselves in the direction of the enemy player that is carrying our flag towards their base with the intention capturing it and thereby incrementing their score by one”.
Other times I shorten that to:
“EFC”
Just to save time.

“I have heard your request and I am now disengaging from my current skirmish to pursue the enemy player that is carrying our flag towards their base with the intention of capturing it and thereby incrementing their score by one, and I am now on my way to confront that player and the teammate who intends to heal him, and I will be doing this at high speed and with an unpleasant demeanor!”

And sometimes new people don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.
Here’s a little gem for Alterac Valley.
If you can stealth into a bunker or tower and cap the flag without drawing the archers into combat, they will despawn. As a rogue, if you do get in combat, cap the flag as quickly as possible and then vanish. As long as the archers are not in combat with other platers, they will despawn.
I assume this can be done by any class or race that has a method for getting out of combat.
Eye of the Storm Brawl: Gravity Falls
Each base has somewhere you can stand that prevents you from being launched in the air. This is helpful when you’re defending a base.
Deep Wind Gorge
When exiting the Horde base, there are three “bridges” over the moat. You DO NOT have to exit on the water side.
Arathi Basin
When you’ve wiped the enemy at a flag, turn and look at the GY. They might have just rezzed. If there are no rezzers, take a moment to think about where there will be rezzing. Many times my team has won the fight at Stables or Farm and then ran off to another base. Where are those 5 players you just killed going to rezz?
Warsong Gulch
Each base has three exists that are referenced as follows when viewed from midfield:
Left side: Graveyard or GY
Middle: Tunnel
Right side: Ramp
Using these is very helpful for locating an Enemy Flag Carrie (EFC)
(will add others as they come to me)
