Addon removal would be a bad idea

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but addons in wow are fun for many people. They make my gameplay experience personal, fun, and unique. I’ve left many games because they didn’t support addons. It’s one of the things that makes WoW special to me.

One example:
Blizzard designed classes to be dynamic. They typically managed this this by using procs to influence rotations. It’s made class design the best it’s ever been.

Without addons, it’s virtually impossible to catch procs and stacks when they are clustered in with 20 other buffs.

You cannot remove one without removing them both. You either go back to a boring rotation, you build weakauras into the game, or you make the rotations virtually unplayable. I can’t think on any other option.

I’m not sure how far they intend to go with this, but if they made the UI good enough, we wouldn’t need addons. Instead of improving the UI so people switch, I’m worried they are going to break addons so people are forced to use a UI they don’t like. This is the stick approach so common with Ion, and that’s never worked out well.

Im fine with addon limitations if the game provides equal or better information/effects on its own. But i know better, it wont.

It’s not an unpopular opinion. It’s just something that’s not going to happen. Yes, Blizz might restrict the API, but it won’t stop addons.

Which is a failing of the interface design, which also needs to be fixed in addition to killing addons.

That’s really the only solution at this point. Add-ons need to be made irrelevant.
Improve the game, encounters and UI so that add-ons are no longer “necessary”.

Anything less is not going to work, not even banning them.

you know how much easier they would have to make the game to offset no addons. everything is as difficult because addons are taken into account. we wouldnt have a race to world first as it would be as easy as ff14. theres no longer a chance for eu to be apart of the race as it will be done day 1

Somewhat ambivalent.

I’m trying to spend more time enjoying the core of the game.

For a while when M+ was at peak the vibe was very much along the side of ‘WA+ BigWigs+ alarm addon + details (+enhanced nameplates + decursive).

I reckon WoW could benefit from having a better core system that might be simpler and need less.

Most people agree that removing addons would kill the game.

That is NOT an unpopular opinion lol

If you use the default UI there’s a little arrow beside your buffs. When you click the arrow it’ll minimize the amount of buffs displayed, hiding all the stat buffs and only display Spec/Class and Item Procs.

Disclaimer, I use the coordinates add-on.

It would be nice if WOW had a drop down list of game approved add-ons. A player could use or not use then all would be happy in the realm. They would be current with updates, etc.

Part of the strength of the current interface is that it is so customisable. Blizzard can, and does break addons that become problematic, but they’ll never risk taking away the interfaces that people have gotten used to. I think they might tighten controls a little bit, but other than that, addons are here to stay.

The unpopular opinion is wanting addons removed.

That’s fine. The game should not be designed around 80 individual people, the race is bad for the game.

I’ve seen two YT videos on it, and they seemed to be cheering it on - as were the people in the comments. It made me a bit apprehensive. After reading Ion’s comments, I’m probably a little too worried about it. It’s just that I don’t see how Ion is going to pull that off without making the experience worse for most people.

I’m afraid that won’t stop him though.

Addons should have been limited a long time ago. I’ve done PvP and Mythic dungeons, and yes, your addons give you an advantage over other players, and that is an issue.

Remove or restrict addons, returns fights to sane levels of complexity, and dial the ability bloat back enough that you don’t need to be Derek Paravicini to play your class well.

everyone gets so defensive when i crap on the rwf stuff. just dump em over to a tournament realm and leave the raid tuned for everyone and not force us to wait for them to get nerfed.

i dont even use much addons for raiding other than learning the fights. my ui addons are so much more important to me. i always end up raiding without dbm and wa for fights once i know what im doing cause the fights arent hard

The only addon i use on retail is damage meter, bagnon, RP addon and GTFO

they aren’t ever going anywhere.
They’ve been here since the start.
If Blizz was going to get rid of them, it would have been LONG ago.
