Add-on Ban questions

I’ve heard that “soon” Blizzard will be curbing the use of combat related add-ons. As I understand it, the intention is to restrict the information being broadcast during combat encounters. So utility add-ons related to features such as role-play or inventory control or transmog or guild management or map coordinates, etc etc etc, would not be affected. Is that correct? And what about combat rotation assist add-ons, such as ConRo? Would those also be impacted? I find those helpers quite useful. And what about combat trackers like Skada? I find those helpful in improving my skills.

Thank you for any assistance or advice you are willing to offer.

Unfortunately, this wouldn’t be something the CS agents can really tell you. As I don’t believe anything has been put into stone, there’s nothing really beyond spculation.

I’d recommend waiting until things are more concrete. Additionally, your post might be better off in the Addons and Macros forum.

Oh… I thought this was already in the works. Any idea as to the timeline?

And I could not find an Addons and Macros category. Did you mean UI and Macros?

Any changes in regards to addons and how they will function will most likely be posted as an announcement by a Community Manager, most likely in General Discussion at some point when times come around when they announce the changes.

Sadly, this is not something Customer Support will have any involvement with, nor are responsible for any policy making in regards to addons. If you wish to provide that feedback about it, then you might need to edit the thread, and move it over to UI and Macro forums.

Yes, sorry, UI and Macro forum.

As this is something the developers are looking at, I do not believe that any timelines have been put out there. It’s possible that I’ve missed a post in the General Discussion forum though.

But these changes are not put out by CS.

Gotcha. Thanks for that. I thought this development change was further along. I’ll wait until there’s more official news.

I’m hoping someone can actually link where this was officially mentioned as I don’t believe that there have been any blue posts on it. I know there was a lot of GD posts (in true GD style) about the change, but I’m not seeing an official blue post on it.

Makes me think it was just something mentioned in a video or something like that.

If anyone does have a link, I’d be interested in reading it

Let me see… I think it was a video from the WoW developers. I’ll try to goggle for it now.

Ok… I found this if it helps.
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/world-of-warcraft/wow-combat-addons-removal/
It’s a article that appears to have an “official” video embedded in it.

Here’s the WoWhead article about it. Basically says the same thing, also has a blurb that devs sent to the WoWUI discord server.

FWIW, the upshot of the process as described by the devs and analyzed (speculated?) by the community is approximately:

  1. Blizzard implements a native capability that does rhe same thing as a popular family of add-ons. This has already begun with built-in rotation guide and one-button rotation (the same overall functional space as add-ons like Hekili).
  2. Community begins to adapt the new built-in tools. This is in play now for rotation guidance.
  3. Blizzard removes access to necessary messages and system calls require for addons to function. This hasn’t happened yet, even for capabilities where Blizzard is beginning to step in. The consensus is that this won’t happen during the duration of TWW. When it does happen, addons that depend on the removed support will simply break. In this hypothetical, Hekili (e.g.) will just stop working. There will be no need to ban anyone or anything. Players will simply remove the non-functional add-on and developers will abandon development or repurpose them to do something useful with whatever capabilities Blizzard continues to allow them.

This was interesting. So it looks like Skada will be replaced with an in-game feature. That’s awesome. And it looks like the same for Tidy Plates. Hopefully it will have that easy feature for tanks that allows you to see by the name color which mobs you need to pick up aggro on. I’m liking this direction the devs are taking.

Where would I access the built-in rotation guide? I did see the one-button rotation toggle, but I don’t want to go that far. I would like to try the built-in rotation guide, though, and see how it compares to ConRo, but I do like less dependence on add-ons.

This is some exciting news, indeed!! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! Gonna try it out this week.

The only thing we can say on the timeline is midnight at the absolute earliest, although I find Last titan to be more likely.

Sorry, I don’t understand. What did you find out about the timeline?

I actually think there will be a step before this where they drastically cut back update rates on certain types of data that the addons use, while in combat. So instead of an addon like Hekili being able to update tens of times per second, it might get throttled to once per second, or might even only have access to delayed data from seconds ago(think stream delays on platforms like Twitch). Realistically, addons shouldn’t be allowed to update more than 2-4 times per second, while in combat, since they are one the largest causes of CPU bottlenecking, due to all the LUA being ran on the main game thread.

They might not fully axe the addon’s ability to function, but they’ll basically become useless and help transition players over to the newer built in systems.

My game went down, I had to reload the entire game, and now I have no add-ons? If I wanted Vanilla again I would go there, but I dont because it suxored

Game crashing would have nothing to do with addons going poof next time create a new thread instead of posting something that istn realavent to the conversation.

This is about addons and I was directed to this post when I searched. But thanks for the kind and helpful msg…? /s bless your heart

No this has to do with addons being made inhouse by blizzard that hasnt happened yet your situation is 100% different.
