I reached the character limit for my account and can’t create a new character. I deleted multiple characters, maybe 5 or so, and it still says I’m at the limit. What could be wrong?
Have you logged completely out of the game and did a fresh login since deleting the characters?
I think it takes a while to register.
Maybe wait a day or two? Possibly a week?
Try relogging. That usually does the trick.
Did just try completely logging out of Battle.net, closing the program, launching it again, and relogging in. No change.
I ran into this about ~18 hours ago. So it hasn’t been a full day. But I also ran into the limit a few days ago, deleted one, and was immediately able to create a new toon. No idea why it wouldn’t work this time. I’ve tried creating both timerunning and regular characters (just in case there was a separate timerunner limit or something).
Edit:
I figured it out actually, although I’m still confused about how I ended up in this situation.
I happened to have a slightly outdated spreadsheet I made that listed my characters and what realms they were on. This allowed me to realize I had some characters on realms that didn’t list a number in the “characters” column of the realm selection screen in the game UI. After I checked all the servers, I added up how many characters I had - 67.
The limit, as far as I know, is 65. So how did I have 67 characters? I deleted 3 so I would be down to 64, and it still wouldn’t let me. After deleting 3 more characters, so 61 left on my account, I could create a new one. This brings my new total to 61.
I don’t know how I got over the limit. This also makes me think that I had to delete down to 61 because there are actually a few more characters I didn’t find on other servers.
I deleted a lowbie character to remake it as a Remix one. I got the character limit message. I did a rough count of my characters using the numbers on the realms. I had created a bunch of Remix characters really close together in time. I figured that’s what made me able to create more than the limit.
I suspect really ancient characters are moved to an archival state and stop counting toward the limit … likely to help reduce load requirements.
I also have (or had) more characters than the limit – I popped onto a realm I hadn’t looked at in over a decade and it spawned several lost characters.
From what we are told they don’t actually go into an archive state, the server simply loses track of them into you log into the realm again.
That sounds a lot like they’re no longer kept in nearline storage, which more or less correlates.
But we’re starting to get a bit pedantic in such case. ;p
