Abusive language?

So I’m curious cause multiple people have threatened to report me for this due to me using curse words. What exactly does Blizzard consider “abusive language” cause minor insulting I don’t believe fits that bill as far as I know slurs and a certain C word are what can trigger punishment, but can normal swearing even tho people have the option to use the FILTER really be penalized?

Yes, and has been since 2004. The filter does not give you freedom to break the rules. Doesn’t even have to be directed at anyone in particular, it can still be reported and action taken.

To be blunt: What you believe isn’t a factor - cursing at all is agianst the rules. End of story. And the filter doesn’t allow you to break them, either.

Filter or no, the filter does not allow one to break the rules. No foul language, masked or overt, is allowed to be used. Directed at anyone, or not.

Since you seem to realize it was the curse words themselves, then you know what to avoid in the future, but it could also be caused by spam or advertising in the wrong channel.

I agree with what’s been said and will add this link as a good starting point for what could be considered inappropriate in-game too. If it’s not appropriate for the WoW forums, it’s not appropriate in-game either:

And here’s the in-game version:

Using profanity is against the In-Game Code of Conduct, and always has been.

I’m just going to requote from Mirasol

Even though I am positive a lot of others have already said it, I’ll put it in Blue.

Yes, it absolutely can be penalized. Our policies prohibit the use of all inappropriate language. Directed or not, clearly spelled, masked (including in acronyms).

The mature language filter is not there to allow you to use inappropriate language. It is an extra layer of protection for those who do not wish to see the language. That gives parents the ability to block the language from their minor children who they allow to play our T for Teen rated game, as well as giving agency to other people who just don’t want to see it.

Please also note that we extend those policies to toxic and abusive language as well as inappropriate subject matter. So even if you are not directly using profanity, please be mindful of how you engage with others.

Yes. Full stop, Yes. 100%. You agreed not to swear, there is no talking around it, the filter is Not an excuse.

Gotcha, unfortunate that its the scenario that way, but it makes sense since its Teen and up for the games rating. Ty for the info at least. I would like to inquire exactly what punishment guidelines there are for abusive language, I assume its a dependent on severity thing

First infraction is a week’s silence, next is a suspension (3 or 7 days?). Severity only counts for the first couple penalties in that an egregious breach can result in higher penalties or outright account closure, but a third penalty could be something as minor as dropping the f-bomb somewhere, it will still incur the second suspension duration (7 or 14 days?).

Well this might happen to me then cause if they did report me then imma get suspended even tho I didn’t report them for what they said to me, which I should’ve honestly.

You’d be surprised at how often folks yell “reported” and never do it. That has been one of the challenges over the years. When someone is certain they were reported and then nothing happens they may start to think that their behavior was within policy.

Hopefully you are in the clear. Good luck.

I do as well, we have a mythic raid attempt this weekend ;w; Also feel like they didn’t when they started saying random things like “it automatically puts them on your ignore list” or “You’re gonna be banned in a few minutes now”

Wild guess, but I wonder if the people who say that but don’t are worried about a blue looking too closely at their own chat logs.

You sayin the admin has experience with this?

The right click report option only really gathers the chat lines that were clicked on to be reviewed. We don’t tend to get surrounding dialog unless we need to look further into it.

Ongoing harassment situations would be one of those situations since we need to see what has been happening and see if the exchanges are mutually combative or not (but those use a different reporting method).

I would expect that he has more data than I do, but on the forums at least I’ve seen some people say a bunch of toxic stuff then replay flagged when they get even slight pushback.

I do have a bit of a question on this topic, I’ll put an RP spin on it.

I’m from Wyrmrest Accord, and a number of folks who frequent the Wyvern’s Tail (Inn in Orgrimmar, used as a public RP hub in WrA) do have a habit of making their characters swear. Guuah himself uses “Hell” a number of times, usually when something flusters him.

Now I’m not of the mind to report every single swear word uttered: Usually if it’s in an instance chat and people are being rude to others is where my line is crossed, but for RP interactions, regardless between myself and others, is there a…line?

(Naturally explicit emotes signifying…things I don’t think I can mention here isn’t what I mean: That is a clear line crossed and there should be no tolerance for that.)

I would be careful to follow the rules in public channels in general, but even in invite only chat channels such as guild there are lines that can be crossed, and if reported could lead to penalties.

Personally would avoid any foul language, even if in a RP context.
