I think you are supposed to pay extra and get all the books to have it all make sense.
Iād not know. I am more the put the story in the game better kind of person. It could even be text in the game stuff.
I oddly enough read game items with story in them. Like I read all Fallout 4 game terminals. Some good info is there for the followers of the fallout lore.

I get it. The more options with types of servers we have, the more split the playerbase becomes.

They used classic-vanilla talent system as the base and added on top, their own preferred content, choosing to borrow from BC.
Not exactly my cup of tea overall, but what the OP described is something I would consider playing much more than just standard classic.
Was that really so hard to, as I asked?

Classic is the better MMORPG by a couple of light years. It canāt help it if the players make a mockery of it.
Retail is Blizzās parody of its own WoW clone. An overly voice acted, cinematic laden linear theme park ride of godawful lore that lets you buy game currency.
Thanks to the benefit of hindsight, former employees and company insiders finally talking and years worth of discussion and critical analysis its super easy to figure out where they killed the goose that laid the golden eggs.
Thereās a couple of things you can point to in TBC but Wrath is where the MMOTitanic hit the proverbial iceberg and started taking on water. So if you want to go old school you go back to before Wrath and start taking notes.
Thereās a million directions they can take this thing if they want to. Like you, I can only tell you what I would do if I were Blizzard for whatever that does.
Because one involves the developer making the decision to treat it like the fan project it needs to be and hope it works out instead of making sure it works out for them financially before they invest.
The other requires the players to respect the game and the players around them and I have no reason to believe that will ever be the case.
You can forge that through your own smaller associations but thereās no hope for the larger base.
