A Retail player's opinion on Classic

The dichotomy of shadowlands.

Ardenweald was imo the best zone/experience they had made to date. The melancholy vibe was incredible. Faction alignment was done right until they caved to min/maxers. Bg/pvp gearing was amazing on release. I even liked how the maw felt terrible since it was essentially supposed to be hell.

And then you have ridiculous grinds like bore-ghast, raids tuned around min/max covenants (hence the crying), mandatory rated PvP in order to not get globaled in unrated, and absolutely atrocious storytelling.

I played and have TWW. As a version of retail it’s fine, but retail is still retail. It’s the things like flying, transmog, gear progression, class identity etc that I don’t like and are why I don’t play past one season.

I think a lot of people are upset about insert whatever expansion they quit at so when they see people still playing it having fun… well it’s the meme of the guy screaming “STOP HAVING FUN”.

I personally find retail gross, but I also understand people love it so I wouldn’t say it’s bad it’s just different.

I’m in this camp. I know that retail technically has a larger quantity of content, but the gameplay itself feels watered down and homogenized in terms of how talents/rotations currently work there.

I could see retail being fun if you focused heavy on it and it was your only game and you were part of a good guild, but I’ve only ever really played retail very casually through mythic dungeons and some LFR.

In Era on the other hand, I’m still enjoying some of the most fun gameplay imaginable doing Naxx speedruns with a really competent team. While I acknowledge that the content itself isn’t the most difficult, there are many milestones left to meet when you’re setting personal goals for your character and/or raid team. Era still just hits heavy after all these years, if you dedicate enough time to really unwrap it.

“quantity of content” means nothing if this content is just dumb stuff like minigames no one wants :expressionless:

Pro Tip. Don’t start your argument from the high horse position. You immediately lose your audience.

I was just wondering too what a retail players take is on classic, thank you OP

Yea this is exactly what I mean. Retail has lots of random modes and mini-games that don’t seem to add up to anything meaningful in the long-run. But everything you do in Era is always adding up to a more permanent long-term progress for your character’s capabilities or your production capacity with professions, etc.

This thread looks like bait to me, but I’ll bite.

The gist of what you are saying is that retail is harder than classic (on the high difficulties). I would agree with that!

eh nah.

eh nah. Rotations are more simple than retail, yea, but clunky? No. Outdated? Depending on who you ask, no.

If you are falling asleep during a raid, even a classic raid, you should probably play a different game. It sounds like you just dont like classic raiding.

Classic leveling is about the journey. Personally, I’ve never heard anyone call it an “adventure” (except maybe when vanilla was originally released).

Nah.

See above response in regards to raiding in classic.

Well played sir, well played.

That’s not in retail anymore. It’s here’s 10 totally overturned dungeons and a raid, with a solo challenge that’s actually good. It’s just fill the vault with the best loot you can every week other wise.

Retail is more speed run and parse focused than mini game. I don’t even think there’s even a reason to pet battle now. It’s sweatier than any version that’s existed that’s for sure.

I play it all irregularly, remix etc blah I don’t bother with at all.
played cata got bored, won’t play mop
tbh wow in general bores me, eventually
I just sub on a month to month basis.

playing retail = buy 80 boost and legal gold
for those who haven’t retailed since pre BFA
then it takes a few months to familiarise yourself with
reputation
game systems
retail professions
a thousand currencies
this is even before raiding or heroic.

A healer falling asleep will probably wipe your raid.
A tank falling asleep is more than likely going to wipe your raid.
One of you braindead dps’ers falling asleep? Barely anyone will notice since most of you are bads and have always being bad.

Retail and 60 classic both suck but there is nothing else until MoP comes out.

That wasnt my argument, but ok.

no it wont.

this maybe depending on the fight.

we would notice but it wouldnt wipe us. while is my retail guild a dps falling asleep in mythic raid will wipe us.

Classic and Retail are literally just different games.

I play Classic for chill vibes and because it’s significantly more social.

I play TWW to actually game and test myself against difficult content.

Both are enjoyable for their own reasons.

yea i know it was also symptom of people just generally being worse at video games back then compared to today.

Yep.

If not for classic I’d be unsubbed. MOre like me are out there I am sure.

When story started to go to crap (bad for an RPG), there was gameplay. and then that went down some rabbit holes I didn’t want to follow as the trilogy of terror rolled out the door.

So, lacking story mixed with lack of interest in gameplay was leading to wanting to leave. TBCC to wrath kept me around. Now it be MOP to come, tbc again here.
