A Critical Look at Dawntrail's Shortcomings - WORSE than Shadowlands

While every expansion has its strengths and weaknesses, Dawntrail, the latest Final Fantasy XIV expansion, unfortunately, demonstrates several glaring shortcomings when juxtaposed with its predecessors and competitors.

Slow Narrative Pace

One of Dawntrail’s most significant weaknesses is its sluggish narrative progression. The story unfolds at a glacial pace, often bogged down by unnecessary dialogue and filler content. This slow burn might appeal to some, but for many, it feels more like a chore than an engaging experience. The lack of momentum makes it difficult for players to stay invested in the storyline.

Shoe-Horned Main Characters

Another major flaw in Dawntrail is the forced inclusion of main characters into the plot. Instead of allowing the story to develop organically, the expansion feels like it’s trying too hard to give screen time to all the beloved characters, often at the expense of narrative coherence. This shoehorning disrupts the flow of the story and makes character interactions feel contrived and unnatural.

Gameplay Stagnation

Dawntrail’s gameplay offers little in terms of innovation. While previous expansions brought fresh mechanics and systems, Dawntrail seems to recycle old content without introducing anything truly groundbreaking. The new features are either underwhelming or minor tweaks of existing systems, leaving players craving for more meaningful changes and challenges.

Lackluster Endgame Content

The endgame content in Dawntrail is another area where the expansion falls short. The activities are repetitive and lack the diversity and challenge that keep players engaged in the long run. Without a variety of compelling endgame options, many players find themselves losing interest much sooner than expected.

Visuals and Environmental Design

Although Final Fantasy XIV is known for its stunning visuals, Dawntrail doesn’t push the envelope as much as anticipated. The environments, while beautiful, don’t exhibit the same level of creativity and distinction that previous expansions have showcased. The lack of innovation in environmental design makes the world feel less immersive and more monotonous.

Community Engagement

The post-launch period of Dawntrail has been marked by a noticeable dip in community engagement. Updates and events have been slow to roll out, and the communication from developers has been less transparent and frequent. This has led to a growing sense of frustration and disconnect within the player base.

Tl;dr: Dawntrail’s slow narrative, forced character inclusions, lack of gameplay innovation, repetitive endgame content, uninspired environmental design, and weak community engagement make it a less compelling expansion. For those looking for a more dynamic and engaging experience, Dawntrail might not meet the expectations set by its predecessors.

Surely you meant to post this in the FF forums and have made some wacky mistake posting it here

I’m squarely where I should be - Dawntrail is worse than the weakest expansion in WoW’s pedigree.

Utter debasement of the IP after coming from Endwalker / Shadowbringers. It’s a failure due to the shoddy narrative, questionable job design and the AI generated texture resolution update marketed as an expansion level feature.

Cool post, why’s it here? Post it on a FF forum

I think you took a wrong turn somewhere and missed the FFXIV forums.

LOL.

P.S. On a more serious note, I do play FFXIV occasionally, and the main story is usually pretty good. I’ve tried DT and I’m on to the second new area and it is probably the worst expansion (story-wise) they have released since ARR. But yea this should probably be in the off-topic forum or something.

Doesn’t FF14 have a forum? You should post this there.

I’m in the right lobby - this is meant to discuss how it compares to Shadowlands which it’s proving to be worse in every category thus far.

This is the only thing in their post that makes any sense, and all they did was pull it from some youtube video lol. The story was weak but clearly this is a building phase since the ending clearly is setting up something major.

Everyone knows you’re trolling. It’s not clever or funny, sadly

Can I write a review here about the dishwasher I bought a few months ago?
In a way, it’s also worse than Shadowlands.

You mean it is weaker than the the expansion that in your opinion is the weakest WoW expansion. Personally I liked Shadowlands, it was one of my favorite expansions.

As for other games, they each have their ups and downs.

This is how you know it’s nonsense:

Game has only been out a week since EA lol.

The story is weak in a game that touts the narrative as its primary focus, and despite having gross profit margin magnitudes higher than other studios, they can’t even be bother to have all of their MSQ voiced. How is it that ESO, despite its smaller revenue stream, can accomplish this but they can’t?

That’s unacceptable.

Ok? Stormblood had the same issues yet the game continued to grow. Most people are comparing the story to Stormblood because of how much they are using one particular character.

The gameplay itself has been great though so a lot of the story complaints have been pretty muffled.

Also, trying to compare ESO to FF14 in terms of story is just dumb. ESO has no where close, like not even remotely close, the same amount of story that FF14 does lol.

People sure do love to hate on other MMOs.

The point is that they fumbled the landing across multiple fronts and the game feels like it added a new DLC that’s primarily soul-shattering exposition intended to steal your time.

Dawntrail would mark the first time that I didn’t attempt to binge the MSQ because it was that awfully written and paced.

They didn’t fumble anything lol. Huh?
