9.1 PvP Gearing and why it is BAD

@Linxy and @Kaivax don’t care.

i have every class 60 except dh because im not a sinner and i can play 1 competitively and 2 some what competitively from a gear stand point. i havent logged on in over a month but when i quit it was almost 300 2s wins to cap so even if going 50/50 win loss it would be around 600 games to cap just to complete your gear. i dont see whats so hard about giving us templates or unaltered wod scaling without all the strings, i just cannot understand the reasoning

This change brings it closer to WoD gearing and is a godsend for me. Don’t change it!

let’s make a blue notice this! 2 sets, one honor and one conquest!

I can’t agree more! Been crying out for this since they removed vendors after WoD. I’d take it a step further and bring back PvP set bonuses that affect PvP gameplay for each class or spec. I’d also love to see a PvP stat brought back to further incentivize PvP gear more, too. Great post!

I liked Cataclysm gearing, you had an Honor set which you farmed bgs for and then pvp conquest pieces you bought, conquest went up depending on your rating. Although this is kind of how it is today but I believe the honor gear was a lot cheaper back then to get because you didn’t have to upgrade it at all. Catchup overall has always been rough as you need to farm gear vs people more geared than you, that’s just the nature of the game. The only way that can be fixed is templates like in legion. The most important thing to me is not spending a lot of time gearing which is basically templates. Could ding a character in legion and queue arena and have similar gear because of templates. I dinged my rdruid 2 weeks ago and Had to spam around 50 rbgs, 100 3s wins, 80 2s wins, around 40 random bgs, do dungeons/raid for conduits/legendaries, do torghast just to try and catchup and I’m still not fully geared.

Yeah, the current system is awful because of all of the above. The sad part is that PvP would be great if they just did this:

I’ve essentially quit playing the game because gearing alts, which is normally one of my favorite pass times, is beyond miserable and essentially requires direct support and countless hours of commitment from arena partners. I’m not asking for gear to be handed to me, but it would be nice if it didn;t require hundreds of ranked wins just to be in full conq gear, probably at an unviable trash ilvl. Followed by trying to beat RBGers in duelist gear to get 1600, or making the RBG grind yourself, but without the ilvl to get groups.

All of the MMO aspects of PvP are garbage right now. Barrier to entry from a gear perspective is somehow worse than 8.3. I’d literally rather just do 8.3 pve / corruption farming than trying to go ultra try hard and bash a 207 ilvl alt against hard stuck 1500 rets in 220+ gear.

Hundreds of hours of gearing at a grotesque ilvl disadvantage just to maybe compete on an alt is just ridiculous. Bring back MoP. Bring back WoD. Literally pick any past arena season from BC through WoD, copy the gearing, and we are better off.

wod scaling makes more sense now then it did in wod. there are just too many ilvl brackets of gear. not including all the levels of raid and m+ gear, pvp gear has what 11 diff ilvls of gear spanning 68 ilvls. you can either have trash stats and use covenant gear or farm a full set of honor gear and upgrade it to 197 to be at the very very very bottom of competitive viability and thats being 17k hp and 10% vers behind someone in 226 on top of the other secondary stats you are missing.

You then have to farm several HUNDRED arena wins to get a full set of conquest gear but even that system is working against itself and you. since you gain honor much faster then conq you hit this point while climbing that your lack of ilvl is costing you games because you just done have the stats to compete so you cap honor but dont have the rating to upgrade. so after all the honor you had to farm just to get a base set just to instantly start replacing it just to have to farm more honor to upgrade it just to run into a cap and end up wasting thousands of honor that you have to refarm once you hit the bracket and can dump into upgrades. this is much worse when going from 220-226 gear since that push is much harder and longer than the others so its almost 100% you will be at honor cap long before you make the push from 1800-2100 more-so if you do it in rbgs. since it takes 2+ full honor caps just to go from 220-226 and from start to finish of gearing you prob lose a full 15k worth of honor due to already being at cap. its just multiple half baked ideas stacked on top of each other

TLDR - honor cap is bad, no conq catch up is bad, 68 ilvl gap from base to max gear is bad, their 9.1 gear “Scaling” is half baked and bad, wod scaling or templates are good

Conquest gear should be available to everyone via rating however just time gated. So those achieving higher rating get the gear first then weeks later everyone else can.

that sounds like scaling with more steps

In order to save time and resources, Blizzard doesn’t read posts like this one. They just go straight to the Bloomsday posts to get a finger on the pulse of what the pvp community is thinking.

+1 from me, Blizzard has been obsessed with adding a grind to PVP since Legion, and they just can’t seem to let it go. It’s like they looked at over a decade of PVP systems and picked the worst options from each.

For years you had your honour gear, and your conquest gear, and maybe aspirant gear randomly awarded. Hell, in MoP you had crafted PVP sets that someone could buy so they weren’t entirely useless in PVP when they started out. You try doing that with the crafted sets now and you’re 30 ilvls below fully upgraded honour gear in the first season.

Higher rated players get faster gearing, special titles, mounts, tabards, armour appearances, and enchants. That’s how it always was, what more reward do they need?

It boils down to this: they do not want to get rid of the ilvl upgrade by rank system as it’s seen as a carrot on the stick reward.

They made this change to appease the PvE crowd, which has always been bigger than the PvP crowd, but now absolutely dwarfs it by a ridiculous amount (gonna guess primarily PvPers make up ~15%-20% of the game population).

The issue with the ilvls stems from two areas:

  1. Blizzard has way too many ilvl upgrades in a given ‘tier’ or patch (because you gotta play more dude!)
  2. If they gave pvp gear a static ilvl in pve that was at par or slightly higher than raid gear, the raiders would pitch a massive fit

sounds about right

Been stuck in a feedback loop of:
Dumpstered by a Rival geared players in all brackets of PvP.
Rating gets lower, but I need 1600 to get the gear to be more competitive with them.

From higher rated players the only suggestions I was able to get were:

  • Lie about your rating/xp to get into higher cr teams.
  • Fake achievements.
  • Buy a boost.
  • Go Horde and get it in RBGs.
  • “Wait till next season maybe. It’s too late.”

This isn’t really sustainable. AWC this year actually looks very interesting when the participants all get free covenant swaps, equal gear, and ability to swap out most anything. But the Tournament isn’t the reality of the game so it just feels hollow.
