need this fixed 2080 ti with i9 9900k cpu and getting 30 or less fps in raid with few addons is pathetic
I was able to turn off âCompute Effectsâ for volumetric fog. This doesnât look like it had any hit on visuals and was able to significantly increase my fps in places where it normally gets low.
I also found out that you can have vsync off in game and through the control panel, and only need to limit the frames in order for tearing to stop. One caveat with that: if you have freesync or gsync, must frame limit to 2 below the refresh of your monitor.
Anything after that is the fault of the game (if youâve checked with no addons).
tldr: When you reset the UI per the instructions, do not copy your addons/config back in to the newly created folders from a backup or from the old folders.
Had this problem. Ended up being addons. Was experiencing the symptoms described in this thread.
Disabling addons in the interface does not remove relevant config entries so you will still experience the problem with all addons disabled.
The UI reset instructions will have you rename WTF, Interface, and Cache folders which eliminates the bad config entries.
BUT if you then restore the addons in the newly created Interface folder by copying them in from the old folder, or a backup, then itâs possible you are recreating the problem over and over again.
For years I extracted addon updates overtop of the existing, replacing the files. Doing this does not do is remove files that are no longer relevant to the addon/game and was responsible for the bad config entries causing the problems described here in this thread.
I was losing my mind on this issue. Was getting pricing new systems because I thought that some new code was switched on that rendered my old setup (i5 2500K / GTX 970) obsolete.
Hope this helps someone.
This is a great idea. For troubleshooting, you may need to add them back in one at a time to find which one caused an issue.
For me, I just cleaned out what I wasnât using from my add-on manager, and then the folders the manager couldnât see. It got rid of a whole lot Iâve accumulated over the years.
The game runs even smoother than before!
Aha! I donât use an addon mgr. Thought I was doing a fine job, ha! For those who donât use an addon mgr, I would get fresh download for peace of mind.
edit for comment: so glad it is running smoother for you! It does for me as well, but I didnât want to get hopes up.
Count me in the club if random stutters. It seems to delay for at least 3-5 seconds but at random times.
Iâve got two systems, the laptop seems to do it but the desktop hasnât done it that I know of, but I donât use it as much as the laptop lately.
Iâve also tried updating graphics, both systems are Amd, one 3950 and 5900, with 3080 graphics in both.
I also recently reformatted the laptop thinking that might help, didnât change anything.
So far I ha e seen it happen in dungeons, outside inside worlds. Itâs so random itâs hard to pinpoint down.
There was a period last week when it started to run a bit more smoothly, but now its back to the bad stuttering and ALOT of lag (especially in Korthia/Maw and the new raid)
I havenât gotten to test it out yet, but thereâs a new preview build KB5004296
for Windows10 that says:
âUpdates an issue that prevents power plans and Game Mode from working as expected. This results in lower frame rates and reduced performance while gamingâ
Might be worth checking out.

The freezing up appears to only happen on DX11
KB5004296 Windows Update may fix these issues for you. I just tried it and its much much better.
Sorry, just saw this post. Yes, I loaded up wow with a fresh install, brand new computer with nothing else installed, no addons and it still does it. Iâve disabled vertical sync, changed my direct x to 11 and also tried 11 legacy. Iâve made sure itâs selected my graphic card instead of default.
Intel i9-10900x
GeForce RTX 3060
32g Mem
Has anyone tried turning off live wallpapers? I grabbed the two most recent nVidia updates, and Iâm not seeing any stuttering. However, with the version before this one, I was seeing a GPU crash in Torghast vendor areas and near the door to the Runecarver. It would always recover after the crash and I could keep playing without restarting, but very annoying lol.
Good/Bad news . . The choppy stuttering is not caused by your machine. A few more technical types are identifying the issue as a possible conflict with a Microsoft update pertaining to DX and DWM.
Unfortunately all the Blue responses and post about this issue suddenly stopped at the same time about a month ago. If you find something let us know.
This seemed to work!
For anyone still reading this, the DirectX 11 worked for me, the legacy did not.
Did the stutters disappear???
I havenât been able to effectively test it yet. Blizz may have done a stealth fix today during maintenance.
Nothing exists until it is confirmed. Post if its resolved for while using your favorite Graphics settings.
Still getting framerate loss I tried clearing out my WoW cache, but havnt tried a complete UI reset yet, will let you guys know if that fixes the issue. FWIW the loss seems pretty situational I experienced some pretty nasty fps loss in 3s the other day when a lock casted cataclysm, it also seemed to occur when this person created an army of ghost cats in oribos, I think this may be something blizzard changed on their end, my drivers are all up to date.
KB5004296 update did actually help for me. I went from 100 fps in raid to sometimes 15fps before updating. This update kept it pretty consistent to around 60 in an LFR test (hardest part of this bug is testing). I am using DX12 so the claims this is only affecting DX11 are incorrect. I still do see some dips on the pull of an encounter but I am now able to actually play demo in a raid.
Still having major fps drops, glad i found this thread, also was having some latency issues also, around the same time with the fps drops, not sure if correlated? hoping this gets fixed, itâs literally unplayable for me, Classic and FFIV works normal.
Is it the worst when players and NPCs load onto your screen as you move though populated areas? This has been the most consistent symptom associated with this problem.
Im sure you tried all this already . . . . . If not, try all the usual fixâs like switching DX settings, disabling all add-ons, and all the other Blizzard recommended fixâs.
