7/7 Towers Done. My thoughts

All in all, I’ve done the following challenges.

Twins - Shadow
Tugar - Discipline, Windwalker, and Beast Mastery
Xylem - Arms
Agatha - Fury Warrior, Fire Mage
Sigryn - Demo
Kruul - Guardian
Healer - Holy Paladin

Having completed all seven, and gotten my spell tome (which is an amazing mount), my thoughts are that the mage tower is a good challenge. It’s doable. Some specs still need obvious tuning (looking at holy priest in particular), and some specs could be brought a bit more in line. But I’m primarily talking about outliers. The specs I listed above all felt fair, finely tuned, and didn’t have much of a problem.

One thing I will say though is that for some of them, a timewalking set helped immensely. And I feel like this shouldn’t be the case. I don’t think the optimal strat should be to go run something like SOO, or to purchase items off the AH which are from a time long gone because of things like sockets. I think that’s a major problem.

In the future if we ever do something like this again, and I’ve been consistent in my thoughts on this, I think the proper thing should be to template people. Make gear mean zero. If it is meant to be challenging content that is timewalking, it should be templated to stats which make sense for the time period, and it should be done in a manner which makes the content a difficult challenge, but also much more accessible. To highlight more specifically what I’m talking about, I tried bear druid in my PVP gear (which is mostly rival and such) and the difference between that, and a timewalking set with particular trinkets was immense. Absurdly so. Trinkets in particular like seed pod from Nythendra, or Iskar’s trinket are so good in most of the challenges where spells are being used that it’s insane to think about attempting them without those. It’s doable, sure. But it makes life so much easier. To me? That feels weird.

Regardless. I did it. You can do it too. Don’t give up. It’s winnable. My friends and I have been streaming towers for one another over and over since it came out, beating our heads against the wall. If we can get them done, you can too. It’s not too difficult. It isn’t impossible. It’s winnable.

Thanks to you I now feel I can do anything, even perhaps catch Old Crafty finally. Thank you kind stranger.

Can I nominate you to be on the WoW Council? This is good and constructive feedback.

Not a fan of templates, especially in PVE content.

It’s more fitting for an FPS-- NOT an MMORPG.

Congrats bro!

I need to get cracking on the other challenges but I just can’t seem to motivate myself to do them when there’s so many activities to do that seem more rewarding in the short-term.

I thought exactly this. I like the challenge - but consumables and AH gear seem odd. Especially for new players - they end up feeling like they have to buy tokens, to buy the gear and consumables because they haven’t even played long enough to build a stockpile a gold.

Mage tower is absolutely not content for new players at all.

And people need to realize they can just level up their own professions for the consumables. I spent absolutely nothing on flasks and pots, and only wound up buying a couple meta gems because I didn’t have the pattern.

Also, if you wanna, sure. But I don’t think it would mean much and I’m fairly sure most of the forums don’t like my opinions. Lol

Grats dude.

New players that are gamers could do the mage tower.

Leveling up old professions can be very costly.

It’s just a real odd barrier to place in the system of the mage tower in the first place.

I wasn’t posting for the sake of hoping someone would care. It was to provide feedback and my thoughts on the overall experience. The forums are for providing feedback.

My level 6 twink farmed Old Crafty as an offhand, because it was higher ilvl than anything otherwise available. It took 4 stacks of fish. You can do this. All it takes is patience.

It can’t be mogged, so she mogs her main hand as a frying pan.

Great post! Gratz!

I actually like the idea that there is a bis set that is farmable. It allows the solo player a set of gear that they can grind for.

I feel like they could remove the middle phases of the healing challenge and make it less obnoxious. It’s way longer than any of the other encounters for no real reason.

The first phase with the adds and the final phase with the boss are the only challenges. I understand the gauntlet is supposed to be the “dps check”, but it’s really hard to fail unless you’re just impatient with eyes.

Regardless if you do it with or without timewalking or SoO gear or busted trinkets, you earned the xmog and the mount. That’s a big congrats.

  1. Twins- SP, Frost, Boomy, and Aff (SL gear only)
  2. Agatha - Elesham (BFA consumes started)… 8. unholyDK (RSP + SoO gear w/ +3 Str)
  3. Kruul - Guardian (RSP + Seethe + SoO gear w/+3 Agi)
  4. GQF - Arcane (RSP)
  5. Fel - Disc (RSP)
  6. Heals - HPal (RSP)
  7. Xylem - Arms (Max BFA consumes started) (SoO gear +3 Str)

Once I did the challenge on Guardian, (296 pulls) I realized how much power I was missing on the previous completions. I recall with my fresh 60 DK going in at 275 Str but after I farmed SoO gear with BFA consumes I hit 412 Str. I was of the template idea but then someone argued what’s the point of a RPG game which tests your skill AND your toon. Acquiring gear is a point to any RPG, and I do recall how Mage Tower in Legion was extremely hard and not many could get any done the first go around (3-4days long), I only got SP done. Most my toons had to wait for better Nighthold gear or just outgear it simply with ToS gear. I sympathize with the players who want the xmog/mount so bad that they’re spending on WoW tokens, there’s a few of them outside of Mage Tower completely distraught. At which point, even with a template toon or with max SoO gear with +4 Main Stat with Seethe + RSPod, you know, they simply do not have the game sense to complete the challenge at the moment. Maybe in time, with more hours of practice, perhaps.

The issue with the Mage Tower is it’s limited time availability which put the perception of pressure, because it won’t be up until March I think, so everyone felt a pressure to get it done. Myself included, I got it done the 2nd Sunday. Imagine if they only had it up for the 2 weeks they said they were. If it were up all the time though, would people consider it like Island Expeditions, another thing to do on the side or cosmetics/“fun”? Idk.

For me, I’d say Mage Tower was fun, it kinda “brought me back” however, it shows the glaring weakness of many classes without our borrowed powers from legendries, covenant abilities, and trinkets. I would absolutely love to do Mage Tower again as a SPriest with Pallid Command or Aff with Corruption slow.
