[5 March 2019] - Cable Cut Causing connection problems for Southeast Asian players

Hey folks,

We have received reports of increased latency and disconnections due to an undersea cable cut on the way to our servers. This is primarily affecting players in the following countries:

  • China
  • Hong Kong
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore
  • Taiwan

Until the cable is repaired, players may experience connectivity issues. Unfortunately there is not a whole lot to be done to fix this on your end. You can try using a Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to work around the issue if this sort of program is legal in your country. Thanks to our players for reports of the issues, and feel free to post tests, information, or work arounds in this thread if you suspect you are affected. We will not be able to resolve this issue from our end, but perhaps the community can help eachother out to work around the problem.

If you are not a member of one of the countries listed above, your issue would be different. You’ll want to post on another thread or create your own in that case.

Thanks for the update.
Any idea how long it will take to repair based on previous issue?

Unfortunately the ISP who owns the cable hasn’t posted a fix timetable yet. Depending on the extent of the damage and location, it can take weeks or even months to fix a cut of this nature. I would keep an eye on the link above and try some of the work arounds that I posted previously.

This only affect Singtel and M1 user from SG
Other singapore ISP are fine btw

Thankyfully, the latency in raids are not as bad for the time being… thought it says 300 + latency, i am only experience a slight 0.3 sec delay in my spell casts in world servers, but no issues while in raids…

But the thing, I am wondering is why it is affecting our network to the Oceanic wow servers (which correct me with I am wrong is located is Australia) ? the ACP cable is connects Singapore - Japan - Shanghai regions, it does not connect to Australia.

for me, 300+ is off-peak, but once is peak hours, it will spike up close to 1k.
looks like not getting my AOTC sooner. :expressionless:

Hey, has there been any word with regards to the cable issue?

It seems to be better recently. but i am still getting 130+ latency while my fellow guildies are getting 90+

It looks like the Hinet article we linked to has posted an update and says the work on the cable is completed. If you’re still having this problem, please create a WinMTR test which catches the high latency. You want to restart the test every 10-15 minutes until you catch one of these problems. Once you’ve caught the issue, run the test for about 5 more minutes. This will let us look for problems between your house and our servers which may cause this.

Heya, sorry for the slow reply. was busy last few days.

in the past it will normally be lesser than 100… then it increased to 120… then 150… now 198…some of my SG friends are only getting 98. I believe it is another routing issue. is there anyway i can advice my isp on this?

Your ISP would need to find out what there peering partner is doing. It enters the Equinix network and then it has issues.

I am in talks with the tech department… may take a while for them to reply.

update:
ok… ISP says Equinix is not their peering partner… and they say the issue is not on the sending end… it is the receiving end. It is that the data that is being send out by them is not the issue… but it is on the oceanic servers side where the data is being send back to Singapore, is the one causing the high latency.

Can someone understands MTR reports tell me if this is true? if not i will call back to the ISP and give them a big scolding for trying to lie to me… (I waited for more than 2 weeks for them to get back to me on this matter).

Is there any way for me to see who owns these servers?

et-0-0-48-br01-eqsg3.as57976 - 0 73 73 197 200 255 252
ge-0-0-4-br01-eqty2.as57976 - 0 73 73 197 200 258 235

According to ISPs is that what they own is up to Equinix… beyond that when it is boosted to Australia, they have no control over…

et-0-0-48-br01-eqsg3.as57976 - 0 73 73 197 200 255 252
ge-0-0-4-br01-eqty2.as57976 - 0 73 73 197 200 258 235

Can anyone advise who owns those servers stated above?? Are they owned by blizzard (maybe authentication servers or something)? or some ISP prior to it being reached to blizzard.

they say it might be the case where these servers are not really accepting packets from the isp.

Edit:

I noticed that those servers are commonly used… becus i see them in some of the other MTR / trace route reports posted on the forums.

It is there peering partner. If they own up to equinox and they connect directly with equinox then equinox is their peering partner . Everything after that is equinox. You will need to get a tier 2 or higher tech on the phone to get them to open a ticket with equinox. The people that answer the phones generally have no technical back ground. A manager is a good start. Explain to then that if they connect directly to another ISP then that ISP is a Peering partner and to resolve this issue they as your ISP need to open a ticket with Equinox

Ok basically… after talking with them… basically this is their stance…

  1. up to the point of below… it is mainly within Singapore, but beyond that… once the data trace leaves singapore to Epsg3.as57976. they do not have control of it at all. They claim it is the server which receives the signal on that end that is the issue.
7976.sgw.equinix 0 73 73 1 2 11 2
et-0-0-48-br01-eqsg3.as57976 - 0 73 73 197 200 255 252

which goes back to my earlier question.

et-0-0-48-br01-eqsg3.as57976 <== is this a server in the blizzard data centre there? or another company is charged with receiving the data before being passed to blizzarD?

The Node having a issue is equinix. eqsg= equinix Singapore . It is still in Singapore for this hop. There is a issue between two equinix nodes that is your problem the only way to get it fixed is to talk to someone at your ISP that will actually open a Ticket with equinix

You will need to get a manager on the phone if that does not work get his manager on the phone. The issue has to be escalated in your ISP to get it fixed.

Here is what you need to say. when you call them

Stop with the run around You either need to route me around the affected Node or you need to open a ticket with equinix to get the issue resolved. I am tired of being lied to by your customer service. If you can not help me connect me with tier 3 support.

fact it is within your ISP’s power to fix the issue. Since equinix is there peering partner they can open a ticket with them.

I see so it is still within Singapore =O

ok thx.

just to check so the node after that one

|ge-0-0-4-br01-eqty2.as57976 - 0|73|73|197|200|258|235| <=== this is no longer in Singapore?

Not sure were these are. But ping wise they are not that far from the node et-0-0-48-br01-eqsg3.as57976 - 0. The ping is basically the same.

these two are sydney

Yea I kindda figured that the last 2 were sydney.

Anyhow i did a little googling on my own… and this is what I managed to found out on peeringDB website.

  • Manage to get the techincal support of contact of Equinix and gave them a call directly… unforunately they will not assist because I will need a corporate verification with them for them to proceed looking into the matter. Hence, I will need get my ISP (who seem to be clueless) to contact them and ask them to look into the matter.

  • I am routed to one of 3 data centres here in Singapore after leaving M1. and based on the MTR report i am linked to data centre 3 i am guessing (epsg3).

I took all this info and told the manager (who seem to be more sincere in addressing the issue) to have the backend look into it… So once again i gotta give them a few days to look into it.

I think what you are referring to as data centers are nodes or hops . this is a node/hop ge-0-0-4-br01-eqty2.as57976. Each hop consists of switches and routers

They only respond to their customers which would be your ISP.

HA ah!!! good news they changed my connection route.

Hahaha anyway Thanks for your help. I learned out to read a MTR / Traceroute thanks to you.

To the Moderators / Tech support people: I noticed Equinix (singaopore) did pop up a few times in other threads where people complained about high latency. Some of whom are connecting from the Philippines. I hope this helps somehow in addressing their problems.
