Looking at Classic Wotlk, how viable is 2h Frost DK? Does it work in any situation (PVP, PVE, Dungeons/Raids)? I recall WOTLK being pretty flexible with weapon/talent choices for DKs, but I don’t want to doom myself! Any and all advice is appreciated.
I’m sure someone here has a more official answer, but from my understanding:
Blood: 2h
Frost: DW
Unholy: DW or 2h
Don’t think 2h Frost is a thing that is viable

I did it back in the day and had no issues holding the top 2-3 spot. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.

What patch? What raid? What was the average ilvl (Or GS) of your group?
There are a lot of things to unpack here before your memories from 14 years ago are helpful

All the weapon talents are in the first 4 rows, you can get 2h or dw with any spec.

Unholy should always be DW till Shadowmourne

This is very cool! Most players here didn’t actually do that back in the day!
That being said, this was normal mode raiding, and thus not very comparible to the modern Classic playerbase. In 10/25 ICC normal, a 2h Frost DK may work fine as the raid isn’t difficult, but 25 H ICC is a bit different, especially 25 H LK where there’s some tight DPS checks
Blood: DW unless you need to change to a 2-hander because of parry rates on certain bosses. (EDIT for level 80 that is, you will likely be encouraged to have a set of 1 handers and a 2-handers for max min-max sweatiness).
Frost: DW always
Unholy: DW is far outperforming 2-hand and most likely will do so until Shadowmourne and only Shadowmourne. (Pre patch however Unholy should use a 2-hander because of limited talent points).
Where did you hear this? Is this some new discord theorycrafting?
I remember people raging and calling me an idiot when I tried DW unholy in OG WotLK.
It all depends on if the boss can parry (or do melee attacks) or not. If the boss can’t parry DW is going to be the best for DPS. If it can your better off with 2-Hander from what I’ve been reading from theory crafters. More or less it’s just to maximize DPS.
So this is the discord’s theorycrafting, though? I don’t play DK, I’ve just never in my life heard of a DW Blood on Warmane. Unholy was always debated, but never blood
I remember it as being a pain to get upgrades for both 1h weapons. So I stuck to a 2h build for most of wrath. Various hybrid builds primarily focusing on blood or unholy.

This has been theory crafting by those who have been testing it out in WotLK Classic Beta at max level.
But is this the Discord’s theorycrafting or like, Metagoblin or something? There is a difference
Discord’s and WoWhead mentioning it, but it all depends on the boss of each raid. For the most part if the boss doesn’t gain parry haste DW, if it does use a 2-hander.
It’s not ideal from a min-max perspective, but it’s not that bad.
There was a 2H Obliterate focused PVP spec floating around during wrath. I found it on one of the forums and ended up using it most of the second half of wrath. It was a great deal of fun and was more than viable in BGs and mid-level arena. Sadly I do not remember what forum had the guide posted for it and I have been unable to find it.

it’s trash, don’t play it, also don’t play DW Unholy is garbage as well, don’t believe the content creators cause in the end they do it for content.

It works, there’s nothing wrong with 2h frost. In fact 2h obliterate crits can sometimes be 1 hit kills with the right build/glyphs, just make sure to pick up the 2h talent from blood before going all the way into frost.
