160 seconds until release

Just had an attempt on the World Boss. Most of us died, but got a HUGE release timer. Is this new or a bug? “160 seconds until release is available”

When I was finally able to release, I didn’t get credit since I was running back from death.

Pretty sure that this is working as intended. Best thing to do is not release assuming the boss is near death. If it happens when you first engaged the boss, you might still have time to run back, but as long as you tagged the boss (got a few hits in) which should put you on their damage list, you will still qualify for loot.

If you do miss out, you can try the world boss again.

It should be intended, Tiabeanie. It is to help prevent situations in which you wouldn’t get credit because you were running back.

Did you manage to tag the World Boss before you died? Only reason I can think you didn’t get credit is you didn’t do that first, or there was as wipe and they managed to kill the reset boss before you could return and tap him.

In my experience, you can usually get credit if you get back within range of the boss when it dies. But if you aren’t close enough when it dies you don’t get credit.

I did. I died at 40%. I just redid the boss again. I’ve just never seen as long of a timer for releasing. Wanted to check. Thanks!

Generally you only see it happen in PvP activities when you die so many times within a short amount of time, but it can occasionally cross over into PvE activities.

It would happen on the dinosaur, name escapes me, on an island in Panderia. I would get a huge res timer for dying so many times

I believe the SL World Bosses also have an additional “Death Penalty” debuff that prevents you from releasing for some amount of time, even if you haven’t died enough to incur a rez timer.

I could’ve sworn the debuff used to be ten minutes rather than three, but that seems an excessively long time for one tank to potentially hold 39+ other players hostage while he very very very slowly whittles a world boss down by himself…

Yes, the world bosses used to have a longer timer. When I first fought one, I died and there was no timer at all. Just had to wait until the boss died, and got rewarded since I was on the threat list, and then was able to release. Haven’t died to the bosses lately though, on any of my characters, so knock on wood.

Just to clarify, OP is talking about the newly added in Shadowlands Release timer, not the Res timer incurred from multiple deaths in rapid succession.

Oondasta…his name was Oondasta and my many bones still lay at his enormous unforgiving feet. Good times.

I don’t believe this is true. WoWhead says it’s Mortanis this week, and an article from December says he comes with a debuff called Death Penalty.

Changelog shows that debuff has been around since 7.0.3 (Legion).

But yes, you are correct-- I did conflate release with resurrect. Not enough coffee.

You know, come to think of it I have only died on a world boss while fighting Mortanis in this expansion. I assumed it was something that was added for world bosses in general. Bad assumption on my part!

That was added for Violet Hold revamp. Tanks could pull bosses near the door, and player could release and spawn right back in the fight, making mechanics a moot point.

That version just made it where you cannot release during the fight. Battle rezs/soulstones/etc were the only way to get back into the fight.

The Shadowlands version puts a long timer on it, for both the reason Vrakthris gave, plus the added benefit of not making people pay attention.

Same here. I can’t confirm if all world bosses do this. Just Mortanis.
