16 an hour here 40 a week would pay all my bills and i would have some extra.
Literally what I would think If I was Job searching and saw that range.
Almost like they want to say "well we start everyone at 16/hr. But with some Hard Work and dedication you can be at that 30$/hr range in no time." yeah right… That Range is incredibly sleezy.
My hubby is always looking at job opportunities and they always say “salary commensurate with experience, starting at $25,000.” Okay… so what does someone with two decades of experience get? What’s the ceiling? It’s local government employment. You know they have a ceiling. And it’s not going to be that much higher.
No… no it doesn’t.
I made close to 30/an hour working at a bakery and cafe as a barista.
It was busy, and most of it came from tips.
Very stressful job, but I miss it sometimes. I don’t miss the customers being nasty about their drinks on occasion.
No amount of money is worth the stress and why such jobs like that have a high turnover, even Starbucks was like that.
Working in the city has its perks (the pay). Just don’t try to live there hahaha (the rent).
With some handy dandy nepotism, you can get into the $30 per hour range
“My nephew makes 30 so we can technically put that in the range, right?”
I have had my arguments with the company I work for. But I will say this for them; at least their salary starting range is not Vague. Its Transparent. They list it as $25-30/hr starting. Then state your final rate negotiated will be based on Education, Experience and current Certifications. Obviously if they have to pay to get you Microsoft Certified or Asus Repair Certified you will start at the lower end of the totem pole
But a $15-30/hr range? Just What!? Thats literally double the bottom end pay rate. Never seen that before. Its shady as can be
$16/hr is the starting wage for untrained employees here.
Depending on the location, a person can finance a 3 bed home for less than $500/m. Mortgage foreclosures, auctions, private sellers. All depends on where you look. 1 thing I guarantee is buyers have a VERY low chance to find a decent price home on the internet. It has to be found with footwork. Not realty companies. No internet listings.
Dang. Yeah 9 to 10 is for untrained folks around here.
I’m at 11 and it pays most the bills. Hubby handles car / mortgage things like that and i handle food water gas electric etc
It’s work from home too which is nice
TBH if your husband has two decades of experience, he’s way over experienced for a starter job… and that $25k is starter pay. Most employers in this area would file him as over qualified and he’d never get a call.
Right, that’s why the listing say “starting at,” but they don’t give what he would get. Which is the annoying part. And since it’ll always be a local government position… they do that on purpose to try to lure people in, knowing they can’t pay them crap.
And it used to be worth it, because PERS. But even PERS is going to poo now.
Back in the day I started at $8/hr, now the boss pays $20/hr if you have basic knowledge I make a more than that as I’ve made myself indispensable. I know too much stuff about too many core clients that they’d never be able to recreate the stuff I won’t write down. I work in security/fire alarm systems. He also likes me. we’re kind of two birds of a feather.
The starting salary isnt the problem. The range is! $16/hr vs 30? Thats double the pay rate man!? Just WTH?
yeah my first question in an interview would be. “So you listing says $15-30/hr. That is a very large range. What % of employees currently in this position are at the top of that range?” If their answer was not 70% or over? Id say have a good day.
I still have a bad taste in my mouth from seeing that range.
Where I live (not in California, it’s much cheaper here) you can make $16/hr flipping burgers or pushing carts in at Kroger. Blizzard should be starting out at at least double that.
That said, I can’t view that link to see what that person is saying. It’d be nice if they posted somewhere that was NOT a malicious site.
Right? Hubby traveled two and a half hours for an interview as a county magistrate for a larger city area— only to find out that the cap on the salary wasn’t much higher than the starting cap (because local governement is too darn cheap to pay people). What a waste of 5 hours of driving an a half hour interview before he noped out.
This is highly dependant on Country. City and State. Also County.
My sister works for the local city Government. Her Benefits alone outway her lower salary. Free Medical thats actually a good plan and Free Dental? Thats worth a lot!
Most of my information through the Graphic Artist Guild and Artists Unions from CA indicates these positions sits around…

Taxes always get paid, one way or another. Florida has sales tax, payroll taxes, corporate income taxes that get passed along to the consumer by way of higher prices and property tax, it’s not a free ride.
Median rent in the US is $1700. $16 an hour IF you’re working full-time is about $2100 a month net. High speed internet is about $100 a month, CHEAP cellphone service about $100 a month, a median electric bill in the US is about $144, median car insurance in the US is about $130, and now you’re down to negative dollars, with nothing left for food and gas in your car, IF you own your car outright, OR additional bills for natural gas/water/trash collection.
Of course, with $2500 in gross pay a month you’d never in a million years qualify for a $1700 a month apartment. You’d have to make at least double that for an apartment management complex to not spit in the middle of your application and hand it back to you.
Senior Analyst, which is typically 5-7 years of experience, pays about as much as being a Shift Manager at In N Out. Lol.
Also, you need to live near campus, and Orange County of one of the most expensive places in the country. (A 1/1 apartment near Blizzard is $2800-3000 at best.). Let’s assume you make $52,000/year. Your profit share is likely just $2000 per year. So $54,000, fair? Calfornia takes 20% or so. $43,200.
Utilities: $300 per month; $3600 (It’s more expensive in the summer due to AC and peak hours.)
Car Insurance: $1800 per year (between full coverage and minimum.)
Food costs: $300/month; $3600
Health Insurance: $200-400 per month ($3600)
Rent: ~$2800 if you live alone. ($33,600); roommates (1): ($3200/2, ~$19,200)
So, if you live alone: You’re basically losing $3000 per year.
If you live with a roommate: You’re making ~$11,400 per year.
And this is before commuting costs. Before 401k. Before other debts. Etc.
So, let’s be realistic here. You’re forced to take a roommate or you literally can’t afford to live in OC… for the Senior level role…for a job that can be done 100% remotely.
