I understand the need for server restarts especially after a major patch/expansion release. However, I find it extremely frustrating that you only provide 15 minutes warning. I can understand the 15 minutes if it was a scheduled and announced restart, such as Tuesday updates. Giving people 15 minutes for an unannounced restart who are doing a torghast or keystone now has to start over.
When you only get 15 minutes notice, it is because the problem they are addressing is a serious one, and the impact it is having outweighs the frustration/annoyance of interrupting something like Torghast or an M+ dungeon.
When I logged on this morning there was nothing in the “News” about restarts. I see that there is one now. However, the news update says there will be a 1 hour warning, which never occurred.
Looking at the launcher, It was announced quite a while ago and in-game reminders would start one hour before reset.
There’s a message on the log in screen and the character select screen. It’s been there since last night. Now, to be fair, the message does say we’d get an ingame warning an hour before hand, and they only gave us 15 minutes.
Also keep in mind, the services can be taken down/restarted with no warning if the need is dire. Getting some semblance of a warning is better than nothing!
Except that the announcement says that “an in-game notice will be given 1 hour prior to the restarts”. So they had planned this well in advance, and as someone in game for 2 hours prior to the restarts, I didn’t see anything until the 15 minute warning. BTW
Since when did 15 minutes equal 1 hour?
Since when did rolling restarts mean that ever single server was offline at the same time?
Sometimes I have to question the competence of the people at Blizzard.
It is possible I did not let the news load long enough before launching the game, but as Hydroshammy said, the 1 hour warning never happened.
For sure, how ever, if the expectation has been specifically set that we would get 1 hour in game notice before servers go down, that should be honored.
I think it is even worse that they planned this restart with expectation of giving players a 1 hour warning and not following through with it. Especially when they restarted on time.
There are far more components to the system than the realms. In fact, every realm could be up and running normally if the authentication service is down, and vice versa. (And there’s far more to it than those two pars.) Seeing that the issues over night were indeed, authentication related, it’s not surprising if the realms aren’t accessible.
Also, rolling restarts doesn’t mean the same thing that it used to. With the advent of CRZ, rolling restarts in the traditional sense would cause a nightmare of issues in-game.
I’d be wary of jumping straight to judging someone’s competence if you don’t have the same inside information and understanding as they do!
Agreed! If the the reminder didn’t appear, then something got overlooked.
I wasn’t in game, so I was just assuming that what the OP said was accurate. If there’s a news post you just didn’t see, that seems to negate the complaint about only getting 15 minutes warning.
“Rolling restarts” is a term they’ve been using for a long time. It used to be (like, back in vanilla) that everything required downtime. At some point, they stopped having hours of downtime every Tuesday, and had “rolling restarts” some weeks, where each server was only offline for a short time. Back then, it happened in batches over the course of about an hour. It seems that these days, they do all the servers at once, but they use the term “rolling restarts” so people know they don’t need to expect a lengthy downtime.
EDIT: If I’m remembering correctly, the “rolling” part of “rolling restarts” changed when they updated the servers to allow players to phase to different servers when grouped, and for lower level realms to be “shared” among different servers. Once the servers were no longer discreet, they had to all come down at the same time.
Never seen so much whining over something so trivial.
I did see the notice on the log-in screen about the “rolling restarts” beginning this morning. So I knew it was coming. MY complaint is this: since when did “rolling restarts” translate into a complete server shutdown?
You realize a server has to shutdown to restart, right? Rolling restart means they are restarting them one by one in a staggered deployment rather than all at once. It doesn’t mean they are somehow going to just magically restart without first going offline. It’s almost like you’ve never restarted a computer before in your life.
So then WHY use the outdated term that doesn’t mean anything? If you’re gonna shut down the server, just SAY SO, don’t confuse the issue with terms that actually mean nothing. It’s just retarded. Just, for God’s sake, TELL us that the servers will be down for an hour.
Because it actually has a decent amount of meaning to a significant portion of the player base. The servers weren’t down for an hour, they were down for ~20 minutes. Please consider editing the slur out of your post.
Yes, we understand that - we’re not all as stupid as you seem to think. HOWEVER, the term also suggests (and USED to mean) that the servers were shut down in a staggered fashion as well - and therefore not offline as long. What they did is NOT a “rolling restart”, but a complete server shutdown for an hour. They were trying to be (for want of a better term) politically correct and not offend anyone by using a term that actually means nothing…instead of being truthful and just telling us they’re shutting down ALL the servers for an hour.
