you need to get over it. it’s been years and years. there are plenty of specs played less than SV. there’s even a hunter spec played less than SV

I see more SV than MM in heroic and mythic content. You can even see more SV in keys 10 or higher. 
That doesn’t mean more people are playing SV overall.

Just because you’ve seen more SV in a very small data pool doesn’t mean anything about the game as a whole.

You got me there, actual quantifiable data doesn’t matter when it comes to a general vibe check. 
What are we gutting exactly? I have already been playing without a pet for 2 xpacks. I pull one out when required for lust and I give up a talent point for stun, and I play without roar of sac/freedom/ms in pvp even though people call me names for it.
The only solo content I need a pet for are elites that are immune to trap/stun/etc, and I switch to BM because it is way better at tanking with pets. This isn’t exactly gutting anything. Many other classes just have no options but finding a group for these.
For everything else, if I can trap them I can kill them I don’t care how strong they are. We have so many buttons that people never press because of the pet. If you learn to use the other buttons, it’s actually really fun to play without one.

To play devil’s advocate, if neither one of you have quantifiable data then aren’t you both like that?
DataForAzeroth is still filtering the results but SV is currently sitting much lower than the other two Hunter specs.

I don’t think they are or ever claimed to, nor did I say they should. I said “more people play survival than ranged hunters like to pretend”
You’re the one making that argument every time you babble about “heroic or mythic content” or “keys 10 or higher”. As if that’s the only thing we should care about, and therefore the only thing Blizzard should be balancing around.
