I like the system but I can’t for it to become currency we can use instead of bag cluttering junk. If they stick with this I’d be very happy
I just wanted to agree with you on this. I was going to do a similar post but just want the Devs to know that in this instance, they did an outstanding job.
Honestly bravo for this.
I’m a casual but I enjoy having a gearing path to 437 even if it takes a while.
You know an even better gearing system? Go kill the boss, get the item and done. That’s what you get. No need for 10 different fragments and 10 different larger fragments to have a chance to combine them into 1 fragment you’ll need 15 of for a piece of gear that upgrades 10 more times.
Retail gearing is absolute trash. You’re insane that you like it lol
Doesn’t really work with the economy of M+ gearing though.
You either end up with EoD loot that’s functionally worthless, making the only avenue of M+ gearing be the weekly chest, or EoD gearing just obliterates any other gear source for ease and availability.
TBH this is the only real criticism of the system. Though it probably needs to be a physical item since the crests are used in crafting.
But there isn’t really any need to have Crests and Fragments. You could have 12 crests drop from a M+ dungeon and have it take 15 for an upgrade, or 60 to craft the shadowflame crest.
As a mostly solo-outdoor player, I like that it threads the needle of making gear I can get from Raid Finder relevant without that meaning the gear I get from outdoor activities has to be trash.
If it weren’t for ZC being a bit rubbish this patch would be right on for me a casual.
I think the only ‘complaints’ about the system thus far are:
There is no means to trade ‘up’ crests (no issue to trade ‘down’ however).
The ‘cap’ on flightstones (less a complain but personally I tend to sit on them because I lack the desired crests)
The crests aren’t BoA xD
Is it the ‘best’? No, but it’s certainly not terrible.
Personally I loved the Dinar system - with RNG being on RNG being on RNG more and more, something that’s straight up like ‘here is a token, here is a vendor’ is king xD
na its not because it doesn’t actually fix the issue which is still the vault and RNG is still absolute trash, doesn’t matter how good this upgrade system is when the root problem which is getting the gear in raids etc is still horrible.
It’s a good system, not great. Better than what we’ve had, but still needs substantial improvements.
My biggest issue is that IMO, the new system actually reduces the incentive to run higher-level content. Why? Because of Hero gear.
Hero gear is largely useless as it only adds 4 ilvls over Champ, so for 95%+ of the playerbase fully maxed out Champ gear is enough. This is doubly true because to even get those last 4 ilvls requires running M+ at 16 or higher or Mythic raids, something that many Heroic raiders cannot or will not want to do. This has two implications:
-
Heroic raiding is fairly pointless outside of getting another shot at a particular piece of loot you want. Wyrm crests are good too but they drop in M+, so the path of least resistance is likely Normal raiding coupled with spamming 11s to get fully decked out in maxed Champ gear. Since gear also drops in M+ this is a far more efficient gearing method.
-
Pugging the first few Mythic bosses is also now pointless, as they still drop the same Hero loot as on Heroic. It’s even more pointless than running Heroic as nobody who can pug Mythic will be worried about not having enough Aspect crests.
As a result of the above - and coupled with how easily obtainable crests are - I think the pace of gearing is just too fast. People will hate on me for saying that, but I guarantee you that in a couple more weeks when lots of people have fully maxed out Champ gear they’re going to be complaining that there’s nothing to do. This spells bad news for the game as the new season just started…imagine what will happen 2 months from now.
It incentivized farming normal to double the chance of getting raid loot (some of which being really good, namely trinkets/tier/weapons) so that normal is somehow still relevant even when doing Heroic is something rather impressive even though Heroic gear is no better than normal gear except for those who do M+ or Mythic raiding.
Gearing is fast this season, which I don’t mind because once the geargrind is done, then I can go back to doing other things.
I prefer MY gear selection criteria… also know as “RANDOM”
Has anyone mentioned greed need is based on your current ilvl and the items base ilvl not the upgraded ilvl? so if you are doing a normal raid u get hosed if you upgraded your LFR gear?
Well there’s almost always reason to run lower-level content at the start of a new tier. What’s changed with this season is that there’s very little reason to run Heroic raids when you can just steamroll Normal. You will get basically the same gear for far less effort and time wasted due to wipes.
This is a scenario which to my knowledge has not really existed before, as there has always been a compelling reason gear-wise to run more difficult raid content. There was a 13 ilvl bump between VoI Normal and Heroic gear…that has dropped to 4 in Aberrus (and that’s assuming all Heroic raiders have the means to get Aspect crests). In percentage terms that’s even less of an increase in power gain since we’re starting Aberrus at a much higher ilvl.
So yes, for Heroic raiders who are already steamrolling the place, they will probably continue to do so. But I can also see a LOT of people choosing to stop running Heroic in favor of normal for the easier gearing path, once they realize how poor the risk/reward ratio is for Heroic.
And you out gear yourself depending on what your doing to many whelping frag not enough drake/or wyrm frags I literally have 185 whelping frags but I’m way past that point…I think it should be
15whelp=whelping
50 whelping=drake
100 whelping=wrym
…so you it’s a little bit smoother…
Same thing with drake rinse and repeat…
Well, the biggest problem with raiding is that often times you go entire raids with very few useful pieces of gear dropping. With normal being comparable to heroic gear with crests, getting two chances a week beats doing one and being out of luck, not to mention the crests required to fully upgrade normal gear comes from Heroic so for those who don’t want to M+ can still get benefits from Heroic.
I just want bosses dead, and hopefully to replace my last S1 trinket eventually.
Yes for sure I agree that having a second gearing source is nice when the RNG gods treat you badly. But there’s always a flip side to everything, and when people max their gear out in another week or two and notice that there’s no progression left I could see a lot of subs getting cancelled until 10.2. Gearing speed is always a delicate balance, but in this case I think they made it far too fast.
I’m not sure why Hero gear caps out at 5/5 and not 8/8 - this would immediately increase the incentive for running Heroic. Maybe Blizz didn’t want too much ilvl inflation? But in that case they could have squeezed things on the low end - did we really need 8 upgrade levels on questing/WQ gear?
Sounds like m+ is the problem then.
I would honestly increase the ilvl difference so only 1 slot overlaps with each other… so 8/8 matches with 1/8 of the next tier instead of 4… it feels a bit tight and makes the overlap a bit unwarranted
