(10.0.7 Spoilers) blizzard what are you doing to Baine

Having that kind of controversy would make for a great subplot at least. The Void/Shadow has shown not to be necessarily evil, although it is dangerous, the light being conveyed in the similar way would be just as interesting.

I honestly like it.

Tired of Impossible Whopper Baine, time for Quad Stacker Baine.

lmao.

I’m looking specifically at Baine’s character development. We haven’t seem him this angry with Magatha after Caine’s death. We haven’t seem him this angry with the Alliance OR Sylvanas. The little character introduction he got was centered around him being a level-headed, spiritual persona with a moral code, who wanted to avoid bloodshed at any cost.

Turning him into an emotional Anakin Skywalker all of a sudden just comes out of nowhere. To me, this felt like “Hey, I’m here now. And since my people have fought the centaurs for years, it is my duty to hate and despise them passionately, even if they didn’t do anything wrong.” Of course, a character can have layers and triggers that make them act emotional and irrational (Captain Kirk and the Klingons, Captain Picard and the Borg f.e.), but you need to set that up first.

Also that he would known from said Magatha and Grimtotem in general that not every member of a species is as good, or bad as the others.

I’m not going to say Magatha executing the plan to kill Cairne and successfully doing so and being nearly wiped out by Centaur aren’t the same thing, but I think Cairne wouldn’t want the Tauren to have a full blown civil war that led to even more of them dying. Though, that almost happened.

Cairne always struck me as kind, level headed and resolute but I don’t think he had much care for the Centaur as he was the Chief while the Tauren were getting slaughtered. Not to mention for Baine that likely happened when he was a child.

One is not exactly the same as the other to be fair. Well I guess I ended up saying it after all, but I think it’s two totally different situations.

It also does two important things; upholding a theme and breaking a trope.

Consistently, WoW has established that the greater forces and their agents are immicable to Azeroth as we know it; the elementals want to return the world to an unstable primal state, the void wants to spread it’s thousand truths and effectively drive everyone insane, the Light wants to purity test everything into oblivion, the titans want everything to be ordered according to their parameters, the Loa are incredibly caprcious and the Fel corrupts everything it comes in contact with.

The light having major agents on azeroth is a cataclysmic event.

The Trope it breaks is "evil warchief saying “oh boy here I go warring again!” because it’s tired as hell and has ended the same way each and every god damn time. Letting the alliance have a turn with the villain hat would be a refreshing change of pace that hasn’t really been utilized in the 18 years the MMORPG has been a thing.

It’s worse than that.

Derek was killed by a dragon. He was burnt to ash. Then his ashes went to the bottom of the ocean for 35 years.

It’s the retcon nobody noticed or cared about.

It is more than just fighting mutual enemies but the effect it has on the whole world. So I would like to see the official stance being peace talks, while behind the scenes hostilities are still very real. This will allow for both groups to have what they like.

Of course, but… most of the “Tauren-Centaur-War” also happed in Baines childhood. I’m not trying to compare Magathas actions to the centaurs, of course, these are different situations.

I’m talking about the comparison of Baine’s emotional responses.
After Sylvanas’ deeds, we saw Baine go “You can’t do that! I won’t let you!”, but he still kept a leveled head, freed Derek and faced the consequences with his head held high.

Can we agree that, compared to that, his “YOU CENTAURS ARE ALL THE SAME! ENRAGE MODE ACTIVATED! BLOOOD!” :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: seems just a bit over the top?

Just read the article. I think its a neat story. Brings up something thats more or less ignored in the centaur vs tauren conflict.

Is the implication here that being tortured by the jailer messed his brain up?

I agree he exhibited level headedness in past situations and figured if there was a moment he might have shown great emotion was when his father died, but I guess we’re at an impasse.

Centaurs were his boogieman whereas he was a young, growing leader at the time of his fathers death. I think he is still all of the great things they made about his character, but I also think him breaking down in the face of what literally nearly wiped them off the planet into extinction is not exactly easy to shake.

You do realize Tauren ABSOLUTELY HATE Centaurs, right?

Which is a fair point, but has he would know from the Grimtotem not every member of a species is as good, or bad as the others.

And he has the player character, who canonically (even if an individual character has not) done all they have done for the Horde and him personally (Helped rescue Darek and then him from Sylvannas in BFA, rescued from the Jailer in Shadowlands, etc…) vouching for the specific centaur group the scout is sent from, and still has these reactions against.

Isn’t the Horde just Alliance with furries now? After Sylvanas ran our Honor through the mud.

:dragon: :ocean: :dragon: :ocean:

Me either. Can I help in some way?

I guess situations such as that do make it difficult to digest their planned route with him. Retcons incoming!

Garrosh was honorable?
What about Ashenvale, Theramore, Gilneas, Azshara, Darkshore, Stormgarde, Teldrassil? Even without the events during bfa… that horse is out of the barn.

Interesting story and another mystery!

He was actually honorable. He was furious over how the Mak’gora ended between him and Cairne, despite the fact he was losing it.

As an Alliance player, I understood from a character standpoint why he decided to attack. One of the problems with Blizzard is their dumb decision to put important events into books, not in the game.

He tried to diplomatically ask for resources since Orgrimmar was placed smack dab in the middle of a desert. Even though everything had settled down and there was a fragile peace between WotLK and Cata, the horde were in a bad situation with their supplies.

So he felt if he didn’t do something, his people would languish and die. So he took the supplies he needed by force. He wasn’t just a warmonger, he was trying to put the Horde in a better position for his people, not just to fight.
