One of the big issues with the Classic launch is that it will be overrun by short-term tourists bonking lazy peons, and Blizzard seems pretty set to use its controversial and sinister Sharding tech to stabilize things.
Proposal
To create a temporary barrier to these short-term tourists, Blizzard could offer a $10 VIP that would allow us sole access to the Classic servers for two weeks. That should make the initial launch populations more reasonable and perhaps Blizzard would also get a better handle on the required number of servers based on this “semi-hard core” interest.
Those willing to pay for this perk would also get access to one of the original Collector’s Edition pets (Mini Diablo - would be funny if it was clutching an iphone, ha! -, Panda Cub or Zergling).
Thoughts?
$10 fir my own private shard? Ummm how about no.
This extra money might be used to support a political group that I can't support.
Best play it safe and not give them extra money. /tinfoil hat

Add a couple zeros to that. We saw how many whales there are from the $50 demo.
now youre talking blizzard's language

In before bfa players would feel "punished" and "segregated"

Tourists won't pay. Everyone else will pay though.
They need to let nature take its course and let people fight tooth and nail at level 1 for a while. Smart players will group up and take on the level 5 mobs just out of zone.

This creates problems more than anything else. If a Vanilla veteran wants to play with their non-Vanilla friends, they have to wait for wave 2, or wave 3 if they can't afford the VIP fee.
The hate towards potential Retail players is getting seriously out of hands. This kind of attitude will only hurt the community, and thus Classic as whole in the long run. I want to see the game thrive for years to come, not die out and swept under the rug after a few months because some people don't want to share 'their' game.
And this is coming from a fellow Vanilla veteran who dislikes what Retail has become along with the kind of players it draws.

Thats... that's the point though?

Are you serious? You BFA fainbois will argue anything. Getting the classic content at no cost whatsoever above what you were already paying is not enough, you have to have the added bonus of taking a big old poop on non retailers.
If vanilla veteran wants to play at the same time as their non vanilla veteran friends, they would merely need to wait till their friends could play.

Agreed. I was just exacerbating the issue with the idea of segregation and entitlement.
I'm against paid (or other) forms of accellerated progression of any kind.
Were all in this together, we should all start on the same footing.
So sick of this [removed] attitude of gatekeeping anyone who didn't play vanilla or who isn't rabidly devoted to this game. I played vanilla and was even in the tail end of beta and stress testing and I dont see why we get some special right to the game, bringing it back is for everyone, and if you are so certain most players who aren't us will come and go in record time then what is the point of bringing classic back? I mean, that says you think the game is so [removed] it cant hold a modern audience like it did us, so in the end activision will just shut it down in 6 months when it isn't breaking even.
So here is a novel idea: embrace all new players, build them up and make them WANT to stay and play with us and we can hopefully keep interest up for the next few years. Or just keep being ignorant and arrogant and hope that we get the PRIVILEGE of paying for something we were promised would be free with our sub.

Problem is that wouldn't necessarily prevent server overloading without careful server balancing. Players are still going to flock and try to slam a few servers extremely hard, and many players will rightfully be trying to do so to link up with guilds they've already formed or are with.
So if they lock out character creation in multiple realms to try and funnel people to other realms thats just going to do more harm then good.

Err, that was really the whole point of the proposal. Getting the semi-hardcore element who is intending to have long-term interest in the game first without sharding. Then the freebie tourists can come in afterwards, kill a couple of boars and then go back to their retail slop.

First wave for me, but there would be too much complaining from those that also want to hardcore it but are blocked out.
i dont wanna have to pay an extra 10 bucks to get on my way to 60 before most of everyone else makes their first character
let the starter zones be overcrowded with people competing for quest kills in groups; i want my shot at it to be just as fair as everyone else's is

This 100%.
This is a knowledge bomb right here.
If I could like this more I would.

Next time try reading my entire post before vomiting a response please. I am a Vanilla veteran abd I don't like what they've done with retail.
No point arguing anything else with you if you're not gonna bother reading the whole thing.
This is the attitude I was talking about and it does not represent us, the classic community as whole.
Classic is for everyone that embraces that kind of gameplay, old and new players alike.
That’s a sloppy solution. It assumes that the population difference between a “VIP” wave (or a non-VIP wave) and an “everyone” wave would be big enough to completely eliminate sharding, which is impossible to gauge properly in advance.
It’s not an alternative to sharding, it’s just a dubious deluxe edition layered on top.

I agree there should be some type of staged release like this to avoid using sharding at the start.
I was thinking something like those the the Collectors Edition could start 3 days early. Regular edition that could get 2 days head start. Basic edition that could be 1 day head start. After that the rest of the community. Those who use these head starts would most likely be power leveling and would be able to get way past all the early zones. I personally could be level 20+ at the end of day 2 and I'm pretty sure I would be close to 30 at the end of my 3 days.
