Your friends should stick to classic if they can’t watch a youtube video recap on the story and care that much that the levelling experience is super fast because no one in their right minds would level through 19 years of content.

I think they could grab alllll the lord that’s pertinent to the current story. The how, the why, the cause the effect, put it in a quest line from 1-60, expand on it over the years, and let it provide you the full xp required to hit 10 levels lower than max when you finish the quest line.
The new player experience is garbage dude. It’s bs. It’s not compelling. That’s what hooks people in. Unless every new person has a buddy to just keep assuring them it gets better than idk how anyone makes it through. Certainly losing more than they’re gaining.
60-70 is the part that’s hard to do more than 1 or 2 times I don’t mind 1-60 that much.
And yet people would still want to level faster than the questline would permit. They’d have to do something like cap experience per expansion, which would tend to negate things like the DMF buff and the desire on the part of many players to level up as fast as they can. They would still be out-levelling the story as you suggest.
Unless they created something like two levelling options: a slower lore-based questline taking newer players through the full experience with barriers along the way to stop them outpacing that storyline, and a normal Chromie time option to just pick an expansion and level up quick through that.
It’s a lot of work to do the first and I dunno if they would find it worth the cost and developer time.

19 year old game with a 19 year old story. If I wasn’t an old player, and was a new player, I’d expect to not know anything and since I’m not an idiot I wouldn’t be wondering what I’m missing. You went from story beats to new player experience? Why? New player experience in a lot of mmos absolutely sucks. I played eso over the summer and that new player experience is brutal. It doesn’t even tell you what spells are even useable.
So get to max level and replay all that content? experiencing the story doesn’t mean you have to do it while leveling

The new player experience is trash but I’m not sure the answer is to provide a guided experience to cover 20 years of content. I’ve spent hundreds of hours replaying old content in Chromie Time but I actually enjoy questing and have a ton of nostalgia. I’m not sure how that would fly with the general public. And you would definitely need hundreds of hours to do the story justice.
They should probably just get rid of levels and have the entire experience exist in the current expansion with optional chromie time for anyone who wants to experience old expansions.

and skip the old…

Having just done leveled fresh alts this seems about right.
Even if the OP is exaggerating, their overall point that the leveling experience is bad is not wrong. It’s quick, for sure. Great for veteran players just looking to quickly get another alt to end game. But as a game, as a narrative experience for new players, it’s terrible.
I think having it be an option is good enough. If people want to start on the “lore-quest/1-60 tutorial” then start up WoD, that should be fine. Just the option for it.
