I don’t know how would this fit with the actual voices
Uugh, more appealing to the diversity crowd. What’s next, a Fel Orc protagonist…
They were kind of always meant to be gnomes. If they were dwarves then that would be due to some late changes to not reference gnomes.
people didn’t realize that flying machines have always been operated by gnomes? hahaha guys really?
the original model was flowen by a dwarf not a gnome, thats stupid garbage that was added in because of trying to cater to the wow fanbase that won’t play the game regardless.
i have played since 2003, it’s always been a gnome.
when was it ever a damn dwarf? warcraft 2?
http classic.battle net/war3/human/units/flyingmachine.shtml
you are a liar just like all the other liars here
Im amazed that that link says dwarven pilot, I heard “Gnomish Flying Machine” my whole life and I played this game even in 2002. When did it actually change? Notably, I would say this is something the new classic games team did not change.
yep it was called a gnomish flying machine the entire time. and even in war3 ROC beta, the model was a gnome flying a flying machine.
just because of a misprint in the outdated website (there’s been other mistakes on there too), doesn’t mean anyone’s lying. you’re just new. welcome to warcraft 3 btw. also it’s a gnome not a dwarf, never has been a dwarf period.
end of thread see ya @nachoman.
You do realize the flying machines were flown by gnomes in Warcraft 2, right? This might be a callback to that.
I get you’re a WoW-hating troll, but can you give it a rest? You’re starting to look unhinged.
Actually Warcraft lore as early as Warcraft II called them “Gnomish Flying Machine” and they were built at the “Gnomish Inventor”. Literally in the name. Warcraft II was released back in 1995 nearly a decade before World of Warcraft. They were even referenced in the cancelled point and click adventure game, with the gnomes having flying machines and the goblins having zeppelins.
However the pilot in Warcraft III was made into a Dwarf for some reason. This was likely to simplify the plot as Gnomes did not partake in Warcraft III directly at all. Additionally due to graphical limitations and inexperience (3D was new…) it might have proved too hard to distinctly model Dwarves and Gnomes and so they decided to make every small character into a Dwarf, even if the pilot was intended to be a Gnome.
Warcraft III Reforged is correcting this mistake. Something easy to do now that there are a lot of designs for 3D gnomes and dwarves and artist have over a decade more experience with 3D modelling.
In RoC beta it was a gyrocopter. If not by name, certainly by model. It was one of the units which was drastically changed for TFT, along with the siege tank and ballista.
Just wanted to point put the gyrocopter unit has a dwarf in it.
I don’t think Gnomes have rippling shoulder muscles like this.
At this point I think we’re just going back and forth for the sake of going back and forth. Yeah yeah, I could also pull out photos of a gnome operating a flying machine and be like “omg a gnome see” too.
i’ll just agree to disagree, i believe gnomes pilot them.
So wait. Why don’t you?
according to the warcraft 3 lore, the gnomes were busy fighting over gnomeregan and did not have personell to spare. that is why the dwarves drove the flying machine.
Gnome pilot looks epic.
I can’t tell if people are joking or genuinely crazy to be made about such an awesome update/fix.
It’s a roided Gnome, look at his face. Doesn’t look like a Dwarf.
they will change most of the voices in reforged so maybe they will change it.
Flying machine rider is Dwarf in WC3.
in WC2 it was the Gnomish Flying Machine.
for me it cool to see more alliance (not wow alliance the human race is lore is the alliance of lordaeron) races represented and the Dwarves already have other 3 units (rifelman, gryphon rider, sige engine) .
but this against the lore of wow because in wow we see the gnomes did not help the alliance in the 3rd war because they have problems in gnomeregan (thier capital city).
Gyrocopter
The ingenious dwarven engineers, taking a nod from their inventive gnomish cousins, constructed the ultimate airborne scout
vehicle. The gyrocopters are small but versatile flying machines
that can cover great distances at speed and evade enemy ground
forces. Though the contraptions are somewhat rickety, they are
armed with mounted cannons and bombs, and piloted by the daring – if not insane – dwarven pilot corps

Does not contradict that gnomes were the flying machine pilots in Warcraft 2. If the Reforged unit is a gnome, then they’re trying to correct an oversight in the original version of Warcraft 3. This isn’t worth getting your feathers ruffled over.
