I actually posted about them adding cloud shadows already.
Here is an example of what they could look like.

This is Battle Realms(2001) which came out just before WC3.
Pretty similar to WC3 Classic in terms of fidelity and style.

This is Warcraft III and not StarCraft II.
StarCraft II also has fantastic terrain blending. It uses an entirely different and incompatible with Warcraft III system to achieve this but it does allow for some sweet terrain.
Warcraft III is a tile based game. Terrain at any point can have only 1 tile type and a single variation value, that is it. Any sort of blending is done automatically by overlaying blend borders based on the order the tile types are loaded. This greatly limits the variation one can achieve as well as how fine blending is. In classic since a single 2D texture tile map is used one cannot even use mipmapping due to bleed artefacts, resulting in aliasing at higher tile resolutions although that might be solvable with some smart programmable shaders now.
StarCraft II on the other hand, like most modern games, uses a system of mixing two or more different repeating textures with different blend ratios to achieve the resulting look. This allows for much more subtle terrain blending as well as more variation due to the repeating texture covering more tiles.
Upgrading Warcraft III to use the modern approach is not possible as it would require changing how terrain is stored, which would affect all existing maps. If they did change the format for new maps then they would need to change or add new classic assets so classic could use the feature.
I am aware, however texture tile ends could have better blending, whether it be less detail or lower contrast or deeper normals, anything. Also existing textures themselves look horrible.
If I am not mistaken, Pete had said that he was not yet satisfied with the terrain, which could indicate that he is working on this, he had already mentioned it before.
We want the 2018 blizzcon graphics back! Please! <3
That’s dota 2 terrain, its a modern and different engine, blizzard said they are using the old W3 engine, by terrain i mean 3D static grass + motion grass, water, trees, mountains, and the rest of the doodads. here what i did just now : remove X from the link

Needs lots of doodads, the clifs tiles are bad , but they are reskined, it will look better, we just have to wait and see.
Also here are some dota terrain video, but again they have new engine:
PS: 2018 demo looks better then dota 2 in my opinion.
Bonus : i love the diablo 3 terrain
Everything needs match again with the demo of The Culling Blizzcon2018 Graphics. The terrain in 2018 looked perfect
The colors are more accurate, but the graphics get downgrade. Sadly.
The game needs a option to play with the realistic graphics of the last year
the lowest fps was 114 in 3v3, the game in my opinion need use more cores, i have only 17% use in CPU. with 6/12 intel cpu.
The game runs ok with no fps drops. But the graphics still bad
dota2 have just superior graphics with just a bit more realistic vibes. Also easily runs with no lag, while wc3reforged currently is just un-optimised mess sad. Waiting for realise ofcourse.
Cloud’s shadows will be super nice.
Moving “sun” (natural evnironmental lightsource) will be nice as well (currenly it’s always 225 degrees even at night, and i didnt find options or functions to change it).
Also, coloring of shadows need some cold colors.
yeah i agree, but dota 2 models are more cartonnish, and reforged models are realistic and superior than dota 2. For now they can’t update terrain and natural evnironmental lightsource effects, but we will have them (i think xD ) when the game is finished.
MUCH better terrain ( add more thing not only 4 tree) , new 2019 shadows…, reflection/light and UI from 2018.
THATS WE NEED!
i think the 2018 UI was worse, the items icons and units were so small, i don’t mind this beta UI, and i think Pete said we will have options to switch between those 2 UI. I hope they make more complex Video options, its a must!
wich resolution/size screen you have? i think that’s the problem, but definily the UI can change the size… there is a lot of games with that setting
This UI is TOO big for me. This ui destroy the view of everything, for sure this is personal opinion.
Maybe in this case the best is a setting with select in old and new UI, is very easy to do.
its an old monitor, 1360x768 i need new monitor. i’m talking about the UI design, i wont mind the 2018, however i prefer the beta version which i think its not the final version.
with more size and res the ui change a lot.
But as i said, the best for this case is setting, old and new UI, personally i take the 2018 which is way better because you can see more the game and not the old UI which take a lot of % from the screen.
The 2018 version looked like a new warcraft game. The beta looks like a really well done mod created by 1 person…
They should have made a new engine, even if it takes longer time/budget, they already spend lots of money on the models, if u do it do it right blizzard, maybe with new engine we wont be able to play vs classic? is that why they decided to use the old engine?
The terrain tiles/cliffs are the biggest problem, and trees/objects can’t be to close to each others because the terrain tiles size is to big.
And the way he can put grass in the starcraft editor, just compare those 3 videos.
